I am a mentor because I want to help others in any way I can, especially regarding naive first

year students. Everyone was once a naive first year student, so being able to help guide someone

and make their lives easier is satisfying and rewarding. Helping others is something that brings

me joy; having a class in which helping others is part of the curriculum is very pleasing.

I am a good mentor because I listen to my mentees. When they need help with materials,

understanding uwinsite (which honestly does anyone understand it?), or just need to talk, I make

a point to let them know I am here for them. I also try to be as knowledgeable of the course

material as possible to be able to help solidify their learning. I research places for them to find

answers to their questions as well, so while I listen and support them, I also help them learn by

themselves.

The SHSM conference was an interesting experience in a very positive way. I felt Carly and I

helped the students relax and become more comfortable more and more as the groups went on.

We were able to help a few students speak up and talk through our silly games of guessing our

majors and “true or false”. I felt I particularly made a difference with one student from

Walkerville (coincidentally from my high school) as I informed her of a program that was very
specific to her interests (a combined six year B.A. and M.A. at Laurier for Criminology and Law

where you spend three years in Brampton and three in England). I felt I made an impact as she

was very thankful, and I hope the program works out for her.
