Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event:
1. Read the book Circle. Emphasize on the name of the shape as you read.
2. After reading the book, show the circle, triangle and square cut-out.
Teaching/ Learning Procedures:
Small Group Rotations:
Group A: Shape Attributes
Spread the shapes cut-outs on the table. Hold up one shape.
Ask students to name the shape. After students name the shape, have them
identify the properties of the shape (number of sides, corners).
Repeat the process for all of the shapes.
Support: Introduce only one to two shapes and have the student trace the shape
in the air and in salt box.
Group B: Shape sort
Use the shape mat, have the students sort the pictures of various objects to
match the given shape on the mat.
Support: Limit the choices into 3 pictures.
Group C: Shape Monster
Rovie Lyn Khademi

Students will create their monster using the shape cut-outs and the art materials.
Enrichment: Students can be given a shape stencil to trace and cut their own
shape.
Formative Check (ongoing or specific):
Shapes: (Shape Cut outs)
Call out the name of the shape before singing the verse of the song and the students will
dance holding the shape you mentioned.
Reteach (alternative used as needed):
1. Have your students to sit in a circle.
2. Place a black square, green circle, pink rhombus, yellow rectangle, and orange triangle
in the circle.
3. Tell your students that you will describe a shape and they are to guess which one it is.
4. Proceed with the following prompts: something yellow with no sides, something red
with three sides, something blue with four corners, and something orange with four sides.
• Add more choices to the circle if your class needs more of a challenge.
• Ask your students to think about how a circle is different from a square, and how
a square is different from a triangle.
• Ask your students to describe what a side is, to which they should answer one
straight line that makes part of a shape. Ask your students to describe a corner,
where two sides of a shape touch.
Closure:
1. Sing the Shapes Song (link in the teacher Materials/Resources/Technology section)
2. Ask the students to name and describe the different shapes they learned today.

Assessment/Summative Evaluation:
1. Informally assess students’ abilities during station activities by asking the students to
identify the shapes.

2. Show the shape cutouts and have the students point or say the name of the shape.
