MULTIUSE URBAN COMPLEX


Start Date: 26th August 2016 End Date: 7th October 2016
Introduction:
Mixed-use development is a type of urban development that blends residential, commercial,
cultural, institutional, where those functions are physically and functionally integrated, and that
provides pedestrian & street connections. Mixed-use development can take the form of a single
building, a city block, or entire neighborhoods.

Aim:
To explore the continuity and dynamics of urban form with a thrust on the interrelationships between
the disciplines of urban design and site planning, street scape & Built form.

Objectives:

• To understand people as users of the urban environment.

• To take design decisions in a comprehensive manner understanding their implications in the larger
context and interrelationships between design & spaces.

CONTENT:

Typology/ project:

According to NBC state Bylaws, Multiplex complex shall mean an integrated entertainment and
shopping center/ complex or a shopping mall and having at least 6 halls/ screens with a seating capacity
of 200 to 400. Multiplex falls under Assembly Building Typology, public spaces, plazas.
SITE: 5th YEAR A SECTION – Marg commercial complex site – Karapakkam - 22,000 -
23,000 square meters

SITE: 5th YEAR B SECTION – Behind Park Hyatt hotel 22,000 – 23,000 square meters.
Methodology:
The Class shall be divided into 6 study groups which focus on various functional’/ structural aspects of a
mixed use commercial complex.

Design Deliverables:

Review 01:

A1/ A2 sheets with detailed study of live and literature study topics, Area statement and current site
analysis and ppt.

Review 02:

Manual drafting & sketches on sheets with Site Plan, Site zoning, Single line Plan, Conceptual 3d model,
conceptual sections, block model.

Review 03:

1:500 site plan, 1:200/ 1: 250 All floor plans & sections / elevations

Review 04:

Detailed floor plans, Structural grid plans, Service plans (Electrical, plumbing, fire, ventilation), sectional
details / working drawings, Views and physical models.

Review 05: 7th October 9am

Detailed Design Presentation with drawings.


Basic Spatial Requirements:

6. Circulation & Services (Toilets, escalators, elevators, Staircases & Fire exits) – 25%

Note: The above proportions are indicative only & students are required to generate a detailed area
statement based on available area and DCR requirements.

Study Requirements to include –

1. Structure & DCR –


Structural Components, Structural Grid & structural systems, Building cores & their Location.

2. MEP HVAC Electrical & Lifts –


Electrical and mechanical systems including basement ventilation, working of elevators and
escalators.

3. Health & Fire safety -


Public health & sanitation – Plumbing, fire detection alarm and fighting systems, Sewage, waste
disposals.

4. Multiplex – Layouts –
Number & sizes, Sections, Projections, Fire exits

5. Commercial Retail & Food Court – Back End Spaces –


Waste Management, Gas bank, Cold Stores, Ventilation/ Exhausts, Floor Drains.

6. Offices & Parking –


Organization of typical office floors including core & amenities, design/ planning and structural
grids, typical open office layouts.
