Reader Summary

Reader: Xavier
Grade: 3
Tutor: Megan Collins
Date: 12/6/19

Quantitative Summary:

Xavier completed a level 23 book for his final assessment. He read this book with 96%
accuracy. His self-correction rate was 1:10 and he was able to read 66 words correct per minute.
Xavier’s comprehension level was at a 7 which puts him at the very top of the instructional level.

Qualitative Summary:

Xavier reads a text with expression and motivation. As far as miscues go, Xavier omitted
two words; and, the. Xavier had 6 errors, for example, he said market instead of marked, tails
instead of tallest, and pall instead of paler. The meaning of the words would not be the same but
they look similar. With the words given above, the meaning of the story is lost. The letter sounds
of the words that were substituted do sound the same. When reading, Xavier has trouble
following punctuation. He often pauses before a period and when the period does arrive he skips
over that pause. His fluency is a 3/5 according to the fluency score sheet. When Xavier was
asked to retell he got an 8, using strong details. His comprehension level was a 7 which lead him
to read a level 23 book at an instructional level.

Reader Summary:

Xavier is a confident and expressive reader. He is always ready to read when given the
opportunity. His motivation falls sometimes but for the most part he always does what is asked
of him. When he was given this text, he was able to connect what he knows about land animals
to what he might know about Giraffes. As the semester went on, Xavier was able to connect texts
back and forth from each other. As far as vocabulary goes, Xavier has gotten stronger but he
does look at me and say, “I don’t know that word.” He is able to understand when he does not
get something but just keeps moving forward. Xavier likes to look at pictures and likes to
compare texts to real life scenarios which helps him with having prior knowledge.

Goal/Accomplishments of reader:

Xavier has done a tremendous job at comprehending what he is reading. He is able to

connect different texts together and summarize texts very well. He does a nice job at asking
questions to clarify. He not only connects texts to each other but is able to connect multiple texts
in one day to clarify. He has great motivation when reading and he is always eager to find out
more. He was able to comprehend videos that explained a text. He used graphic organizers to
explain what he had read and was able to use the text to help him. My goal for Xavier as he
continues to read is to grow stronger in his understanding of punctuation. I would like him to
stop at periods and pause at commas. He is able to read nice and fluently for the most part but he
rushes when it comes to punctuation.
