CHAPTER I

“The Real situation of implemented K-12 Program of the government”

Introduction:

According to don carlo cavina school (2015) The K-12 Program covers the 12 years of basic education (

six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School). This is to provide sufficient time for

College year or what we call “Mastery year” mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners,

and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment and

entrepreneurship.

First, we have the Primary in this initial stage of education its basic aims to create, establish and offer

opportunities to all children, regardless of age, gender or country of origin, to achieve a balanced

cognitive, emotional and psychomotor development.

Second, we have the lower secondary education (Junior High School). It helps prepare the students for

lifetime learning by equipping them with practical and cognitive skills and God-centered, responsible

young citizens, creative and critical thinkers, motivated by the desire to learn and excel in their

participation and service to their families, school and the community.

Lastly, we have the Senior high school (SHS) too refers to Grade 11 and 12, the last two years of the K-12

Program the DepEd has been implementing since 2012. Students begin to study in SHS the subjects that

will introduce them to their preferred career path.

Government implemented this program to Enhance the quality of basic education in the Philippines and

also to lessen the stress a little bit because you know a lot of thing just before the school start.

In Immaculada Concepcion College (ICC) one of hundreds of schools that have K-12 program can offer

you a variety of strands that can help you grow a lot better before going to College and taking the

course that you’ve aimed for. This is to make your college life a lot easier and a little bit hassle free

because you already know a lot of things than those who don’t go to senior highschool (SHS).

Here are some examples of tracks that you can get under senior high school that can help you on what

degree would you take on. First is STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). STEM is

an educational program developed to prepare primary and secondary students for college and graduate

study in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) . So, for example you

can go and take BS in engineering, BS in information technology, BS computer science or BS in physics

after you graduated from senior high school under the STEM strands.

Then we have the HE or Home Economics. The Home Economic tracks offer various specializations that

can lead to livelihood projects at home. This strand aims to give you job-ready skills that can help you in

finding the right employment but aside from that HE also offers various of degree program that you can

take on. One of that is BS in Tourism Management where you can work on a plane and travel around the

world when you graduated from this degree also with help of the tracks that you pick.

Next one is the Humanities and Social Science (HUMSS) Strand. The HUMSS strand is designed for those

who wonder what is on the other side of the wall. This is for those who are considering taking up

journalism, communication arts, liberal arts, education, and other social science-science related courses

in college like Bachelor of Arts in Communication, Bachelor of Elementary Education, Bachelor of

Secondary Education and Bachelor of Arts major in Political Science.

Theres a lot of reason why most of the nation are now migrated to the K-12 formats one of it is so that

their students get better exposure and, in the process, acquire more knowledge, thereby making them

all the more competetive. While earlier on it was K plus 1o years, the addition of two years has made it

possible for students to receive a quality education that is on part with those received by students from

developed nations – thereby making it possible for these students to compete with others on an even

playing field.

As students spend an extra two years in school picking up more knowledge and information, they are

also often forced to interact with others. This can have a beneficial affect as it helps them to hone their

social skilss to perfection.

K-12 Implementation takes a lot of days and years before it got approved by our government and a lot

of discussion too. And as of now it’s still under trial and error while our government patiently waiting for

the reports and feedbacks of schools and the nation. People and communities takes a lot of time

adjusting to this new educational system. There are plenty of complaint and reasons not to pursue this

educational system, that is why our government didn’t permanentle apply this but put it on a trail and

error stage. One of the main reasons of that is Philippines belong in the list of the poorest countries in

the world, and people can’t afford those extra two years of schooling. Aside from that there are less

schools that offer Senior High School and with that idea other students that graduated from Junior High

didn’t pursue their studies because of financial problems. Even thou Senior High School is free for

public-school graduates it is still too expensive for those students that is far from schools that offers

Senior High School Education but with the help of those feedbacks School now offer free ride for those

students that has no budget for transportation. It is to lessen the expenses while studying under this

educational system which is very good.

But there are many different types of Alternative Learning System in the Philipines and not everyone is

graduated from public school and not everyone is free that is one of the bad side of this educational

program because not everyone is free other students are paying the full amount of tuition fee for those

extra two years which is bad and totally very expensive for those people that is hard to even pay for

their house rent or eveyday transportation expenses and also the extra two years of studying and

expense for projects ,a new type of uniform and as we know college is not free and those person that

paying for the Senior High program is going to pay another tuition fee again for four years or even five

depends on their course choice.

This is a huge change for the Filipino’s that are already graduated from high school it is because if they

want to purse their college life, they need to take another two years in High School and they need to pay

for it in regular amount ,with that being said they need to work and study at the same time and it’s hard

because high school graduates of 2014 and below is just a Junior High School graduates only so if they

want a better job, they need to study another two years again and another four years in college that’s

pretty long enouhg than the past Educational System that we only have ten years primary and

secondary Education. Adding to this, we know that education comes with its own negative baggage and

one of it happens to be high stress. So, exposing your child or us to two more years in school means

exposing them to high stress for the duration. While the additional two years to provide these stidents

with various advantages, there seems to be lettle or no focus on careers or what they should opt for. It

should be pointed out that from a curriculum point of view; most of these can be crammed into the ten

years rather than add on two more years. But now with the addition of two more years, the focus seems

to be more on standardized test rather than on developing key skills which can help them in their

respective careers.

Monalyn|Rundina, Charles Jasper|Samudio, Sherelyn

With the biggest batch of students under K to 12 program already graduate last year 2018 and those

graduates are already looking for job and thinks that they are hirable dor some instances, but the words

from company owners are different just like what Del Rosario said, who is also the president and chief

executive officer of PHINMA Corporation, since the country has many college graduates who are not

“fully employed”, it doesn’t cost companies anything to require their employees to be college degree

holders. Truth is there are many college graduates out there with no jobs, they prefer to hire a college

graduate than a Highschool graduate with that being said after enduring two additional years of

highscholl where the implementation was unclear for teachers and students all troughout, the guinea

pigs of the K to 12 reform have every right to be distressed at the Department of Education’s lack of

evidence of its success. Employability was the top selling point of the K to 12 curriculum, but it was clear

as early as January of this year that graduates of senior high school, or Grade 12, would not be able to

compete in the workforce as promised by the Department of Education (DepEd). A 2018 Jobstreet

report shows that only 24 percent of employers were willing to hire K to 12 graduates as the rest still

cited having a college degree as the primarily qualification for employment. Worse, the department

currently has no data on how many senior high school graduates were able to find work related to the

track that they had completed. By that knowledge thinking that go and get a degree is much better than

trusting the promise “fast job emloyment of DepEd” after you graduated from K to 12 or Senior High

School.

student currently under K-12 program population in which makes all of Grade 12 student of Immaculada

Concepcion College academic year 2019-2020.

Journals, Books thesis and dissertations a base for formulating of questionnaire.

The study focuses attention only on the student concerned and is confined to academic year 2019-2020

finding of the study would therefore, be only true for the subject concerned and for the given period of

time. Although this could be used a basis for similar studies that would be conducted in different

institutions in the country.
