I’m sending this to you because
you are special
and I care about you.

Because even if I’ve said it

a thousand times before,
I want to say it again.
I’m sending this to you because the world can
make us distant, and from far away,
it can make friends look like strangers.

It can make us not want to reach out.

It can make us think we might get hurt,

if we reach out.

But reaching out to each other

is what makes us human.

if you ever think you’re alone
and that there’s nothing you can do
and no one you can call, I need you to know:
I’m sending this to you
because you are the boat
I saw across the ocean
that gave me hope.
I’m sending this to you because
we have known each other
for so long, that you are a part of me
and I am a part of you,
I’m sending this to you because
I want you to know that I’m here,
and even if you’re not here,
even if something has taken
you somewhere else, I will stay here
until you can find your way back.
I’m sending this to you
because sometimes life
is hard but
I want you to know
that talking to you,
sharing it with you,
makes it easier for me.
I’m sending this to you
because no matter how dark things get,
you have me and I have you,
and the darkness fades
when we shine whatever light we have,
together.
I’m sending this to you
because no one understands
the parts of me that you
understand, and I feel like
I understand you in a way
that only I can.

I’m sending this to you

because occasionally
we just look at each other,
and laugh.
I’m sending this to you
because the world
can be a lonely place,
and I don’t want to feel alone.
I’m sending this to you
because when it is cold,
our friendship
keeps us warm.

I’m sending this to you

because I’m busy and
you’re busy and
we’ll always be busy and I
don’t want to wait
until we’re both retired or
in an old age home to
look at what we have and say,
I’m sending this to you because trees grow,
and flowers grow,
and one day they must both
return to the Earth,
and so must we,
but what a terrible thing it will be
if we never take the chance we have
to say good,
kind things to each other.
I’m sending this to you because we can
be who are to each other even when we’re
thousands of miles apart.
I’m sending this to you because
I know you’re climbing a mountain
and when it’s tough and you’re tired
and you don’t know why,
I’m going to remind you:

You are climbing a mountain

and it’s hard, and you are allowed to be tired

when you’re doing hard things.
I’m sending this to you
because sending it to you
makes the world a better,
kinder place,
and it needs to better.
I’m sending this to you
in the spirit of giving,
as a human being,
from one to another,
like a flame travels from candle to candle.
I’m sending this to you
because you are the
first person I thought of
when I thought of sending it
to someone.
I am sending it to you and I am giving it to you.

Like flowers give their colours.

Like the rain gives life.

Like a tree gives shade.

I’m sending this to you
because I want you to send it
to someone else, who needs this message
as much as I did, as much as you did.
I’m sending this to you
because someone was
brave enough,
to send it to me.
