Date: 11/7/19 Time: 10:05am-10:35am Subject: English Language

Arts
Content Standard/s:
● CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K.2: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to
compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about
and supply some information about the topic.
● CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.5: Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as
desired to provide additional detail.
● CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard
English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
Materials:
● Chart paper
● Markers
● Writing paper for each student
● Pencils & crayons for each student
● I-Pad // SeeSaw Application
Lesson Objective/s:
● By the end of this lesson, students will be able to take their ideas off of a thinking map
and craft their own sentence using a sentence frame. They will be able to elaborate on
their work both visually with pictures as well as orally through sharing aloud.
Introduction to Lesson:
● We will start the class by reviewing the circle thinking map that we had recorded together
as a class, where we were adding words and phrases that come in pairs. We would have
already added about two to three phrases (which are tied with their high frequency word
this week: and), and there would also be a response frame: “I like _____ and ______.”

Learning Activities:
● Brainstorming more phrases
○ Students will think-pair-share other words that could be paired together
○ Teacher will scaffold as needed with some of the students by providing the first word
and having them think of what may be the next word
○ Once the teacher is able to gather three pairs’ answers, students will go back to their
desk and begin to record those phrases together.
■ *Remind students that if they write big, they cannot fit all of their words
○ After all the phrases are up, the teacher will include another response frame. This
time, it will say, “I see _____ and ______”.
● Writing prompt
○ Students will be given the option to write about one of the phrases using one of the
sentence frames. I will allow students who may be more advanced to write both
sentences if they would like. They could also add an additional sentence using their
own phrases (and not one on their circle map).
○ They must add a picture that describes their sentence.
■ *Remind students that they should be adding at least 5 details
Overall Teaching Strategies:
● There will be many visual components throughout the lesson. The teacher will add
pictures with each of the phrases so that they can remind themselves of the words on their
own thinking map.
● Allowing students to share with a partner supports the students in being able to think and
share with a peer before sharing to the entire class. They can get ideas off of each other.
● If students are stuck on thinking of a phrase with two words, the teacher can easily
scaffold by providing one of the words to help them to think about what may be closely
linked to that.
● Students also have the opportunity to express themselves in numerous ways (UDL). Not
only can they write their sentences, but they can verbally share it and explain their
thinking.
Assessment/s (How you will assess or evaluate student learning):
● Writing prompt
○ Their actual work on the writing paper is one way of assessing their learning. This
will allow the teacher to see how well they can write a sentence using the
sentence frame as a tool and being able to copy what was shared on the thinking
map.
● SeeSaw
○ Students will then take a picture of their work and click on the microphone button
to record themselves sharing what they wrote and their picture that goes with it.
This helps the teacher to see another way that students may explain their work.
Especially if they may have tried to sound out a new phrase, this lets the student
explain their thinking rather than possibly having the teacher guessing. It is also
possible to then assess students on their oral skills of explaining their work.
○ ***This will be happening at another time in the afternoon to provide time
Closure (Describe how students will reflect on what they have learned.):

● The teacher will have students listen to their own recording after finishing and make sure
that they shared all of the key details about their writing and drawing.
● When all students are finished, they will come back to the carpet.
○ The teacher will ask the students what word we were focusing on this week
(“and”) and ask how it can be used in sentences (to link two words together).
