Egg Drop

Momentum: Impulse:

∆𝑃 = (𝐹)(∆𝑡)
𝑃 = (𝑀)(𝑉) ∆𝑃 = ((𝑀)(𝑎))(∆𝑡)
𝑃 = (.2624)(−8.4) ∆𝑃 = (. 2624)(−10). 84)
𝑃 = −2.2 𝑘𝑔 𝑚/𝑠 ∆𝑃 = −2.204 𝑁𝑠

Was the impulse the same as the egg:

The impulse of the egg was different from the impulse of the helmet. The impulse of the egg would be
less than that of the helmet. This is because the helmet is meant to reduce the time of impact so that the
egg will not get a “concussion” or crack from the change of momentum.

Egg Drop
3 Designs/Redesigns:
 Addition of round, hallow scantron rings to the surface of the box to absorb the shock
from the fall
 Addition of thin, folded accordion style scantron slips to add cushioning for the egg
when it drops and absorb shock once it hit the ground
 Used an egg carton piece to keep the egg secure and in place will it falls and once it hits
the ground
 Addition of rubber band around the surface to keep the box closed tightly

List of materials:
 T-shirt
 Popsicle sticks
 Cardboard
 Scantron paper
 Hot Glue
 Cotton from a cotton ball
 Saran Wrap (Plastic wrap)
 Egg carton
 Rubber band

How the design features worked:

The cardboard casing allowed a strong, sturdy shell for the egg drop to prevent movement in the inside
during the drop or the egg/materials to fall out. The t-shirt on the bottom of the box created a padding
for the egg to sit in. The accordion paper strips not only absorbed shock from the drop, but they
provided the egg with stability to stay in place. The egg carton and popsicle sticks keep the egg in place
to decrease movement of the egg. The scantron rings absorbed most of the force and shock of the drop
from the outside. The plastic wrap allowed the egg to be seen. The rubber band kept the box closed and
secure so the contents would stay inside the box.

What the outcome of our design was:

The first drop did not crack the egg, but it set off the 15G indicator (we didn’t test using a 5G indicator).
This means our egg suffered from a “concussion”. In our second drop the egg did not crack, set off the
5G indicator or the 15G indicator. This means our helmet was successful and our egg was completely
safe.

Proposed refinements:
Our design could be perfected by decreasing the amount of weight by using more lightweight materials
such as packing peanuts, packing air bags, more cotton balls, etc. This would allow the helmet to have
less mass which would decrease the velocity and the impact. This also may give a bigger cushion for the
egg because there is more air in the materials than the ones we used.
