H.L. Bridge at Chiplima, checking for stability using sacrificial
shuttering.
To expedite construction work and to ensure safer working, it is proposed to use sacrificial shuttering to
cast deck slab instead of using conventional method for doing the same. Since the design and drawings
for slab and girders had already been checked and approved by department, hence using sacrificial
shuttering and its effect on the approved drawing and design is being analyzed for doing the needful.
The use of sacrificial shuttering will have added benefits in term of speedy construction alongwith better
safety particularly working over the height and river and that too executing it during monsoon period.
The following succeeding pages cover the relevant calculation to demonstrate that girder and slab has
adequate capacity to cater applied forces due to change in methodology of formwork.

143.5 The sacrificial shuttering planned to be used is Profile 52/324 2

of thickness 1mm for span > = 2.00 m.

52

972 Please refer the manufacturer’s brochure attached for further clarity in Appendix A.

The pattern of placing the profile of sacrificial shuttering is such that to cast depth of slab 225mm above
the sacrificial profile equivalent to 250mm slab approved. Refer sketch attached in appendix B for better
understanding.

In this proposal the cover to bottom reinforcement will be 72mm instead 40mm (inclusive 20mm cover
to reinforcement above the surface of profile) and for top reinforcement will be 40mm same as was
earlier given in approved drawings.

On conservative capacity is re-calculated based on the revised reduced depth to compare with applied
moment to check adequacy as below:-

Mid Span BM check -

New effective depth at top of profile for mid span BM will be = 225 -20-16 /2 = 197 mm or 277-72-16/2
= 197mm instead of 204 mm (250-40-12/2) considered in the initial design refer page 148/162 of the
approved design booklet. For reference attached in the Appendix C

Revised Bending capacity =

z=d –bx = 197 (effective depth) -0.4 x32 (neutral axis depth) =184.2

@ Mid span =As X fyk x z/Ÿs= (P /4 x 162 x1000/100) x500/1.15 x184.2

=160.94KNm/m >> 58.8KN applied Hence safe

Page No.01
Support BM check at face of flange

New effective depth at top of profile for support BM= 225 -40-16 /2 = 177 mm instead of 204 mm (250-
40-12/2) considered in the initial design refer page 148/162 of the approved design booklet. For
reference attached in the Appendix C

Revised Bending capacity =

z= d –bx = 177 (effective depth) - 0.4 x 32 (neutral axis depth) =164.2

@ Mid span =As X fyk x z/Ÿs= (P /4 x 162 x 1000/100) x 500/1.15 x 164.2

=143.46 KNm/m >> 55.5 kN applied

Support BM check at face of Web

Effective depth at face of web will remain same as given in approved design booklet therefore no need
of recheck. Even though considering lower capacity between above two calculated is higher than the
applied 92.92 kN moment at the face of web. Hence remains safe.

Above calculation shows that the provided reinforcement more than adequate to cater applied moment.

Conclusion:-

To expedite completion of work and in interest of safety of workers we propose the use of sacrificial
shuttering for construction of deck slab instead use of convention shuttering. The proposal does not
increase dead weight over the girder as the equivalent to approved slab thickness provided therefore
the approved design of girder hold good for this construction method of deck. In addition to this the
deck slab with reduced depth has also been checked and demonstrated in above calculation that the
provided reinforcement is more than required for the applied forces.
