The Taguig government plans to expand its teen centers which provide peer counseling
by which they observed that the teenage pregnancy increases. During the first 9 months
of 2016, there were 1,466 cases of teen pregnancy in the city. Based on the total, 223
cases were in the 14 to 16 age bracket. On the other hand, there was one case
reported in the 10 to 13 years old bracket. According to Dr. Norena Osano, coordinator
of Taguig City’s Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health Nutrition (MNCHN), she said that
the teenage pregnancy rate as of September was 1.8 percent of the eligible population
in the 10 to 19 years old demographic. Due to this issue, the teen centers manned by
voluntary peer educators have been set up in the health centers of Bagumbayan,
Western Bicutan and Central Signal. The city government now intends to widen the
program to include all 31 health centers in Taguig. Moreover, the peer educators were
trained by the Department of Health, international nongovernment organization Save
the Children and city health staff members. They counsel both students and out-of-
school teenagers.
Nursing Implication:
Teenage pregnancy is pregnancy of a female under the age bracket of 20 years old. In
our country, it increases due to lack of education for the children by which doing things
out of curiosity. Also, the causes of teenage pregnancy includes: inadequate access to
services tailored to young people, family, community and social pressure to marry,
sexual violence, etc.
As for the nursing implication of the given issue, it is good that the Taguig government
focused on how to counsel the teenagers because of the increasing numbers of
teenage pregnancy. This issue is alarming for everyone and as a student nurse, we
should be teaching about health education specifically the disadvantages or what
complication they can get due to teenage pregnancy. On the other hand, the
government must develop, implement, and evaluate more at community-based
adolescent pregnancy prevention programs. Also, we should encourage the parents to
build a good supporting system to their children.
To sum up, teenager pregnancy is risky by which a teenager is not yet ready to build a
family so that we should develop, implement, and evaluate more on the community-
based adolescent pregnancy prevention programs.
