Christmas - December 25th, 2011

Dear Mary Lou and family,

We hope your year was happy, safe and full of wonder! Ours was a mixture of
happy and sad.
In February we went for a long overdue visit to see Barb’s sister in Florida.
She was stricken with ALS in 1988, and was confined to a nursing home. She
was in decline, so we wanted to make a special time for her; we rented a van and
special outdoor electric wheelchair, then took her and her husband, her 2
daughters and their husbands, and her 3 grandchildren to Disneyworld Animal
Kingdom for a day. We all had a fantastic time. Angie and Barb laughed so
hard! This park allowed us to take her wheelchair on the safari bus, the jungle
train and the special shows, so she could share in the experiences instead of
watching from the sidelines. We all made wonderful memories to keep forever!
In May we took a 5 day cruise to the Caribbean with Barb’s sister and some
friends. We visited Jamaica, the Grand Cayman Island and Cozumel. It was fun
and relaxing with good company. I
In June, Frank’s daughter, Traci, graduated from University of Phoenix, so we
flew out to California for the ceremony, then rented a car and drove the coast
highway with Traci and her husband Scott. We took the freeway to Santa Cruz,
then drove to San Francisco, stopped to visit Barb’s brother, then continued up
the Oregon coast and Washington coast. We stopped at every park to visit the
Coastal Redwoods, and visited the rainforest at the foot of Mt. Olympus in
Washington, then took the ferry across to Seattle and took 15 back to LA. Quite a
long road trip!
Then the sadness started. First, Barb’s sister in law lost her father to a stroke.
Then Barb’s cousin, 1 year older than her, died of a sudden heart attack. Then,
Barb’s little sister Angie succumbed to ALS. She was 53. So the last trip of the
year was for Barb to fly to Florida for the funeral. Barb is so grateful for the
wonderful time we had in February.
We are staying in Texas for Christmas. Barb’s son & family will be up to visit,
and we will go see Barb’s sister in San Antonio next weekend, and visit Barb’s
stepmom, who is in a nursing home with advanced Alzheimer’s.
For 2012, Frank’s daughter, Traci will turn 50 on January 6th. So we will be
flying back for an extended weekend to attend the party. Then in May we will
head for California again to celebrate 3 things: Traci’s son Christopher’s
wedding, Granddaughter Charli’s Marine husband will be returning from
Afghanistan, and finally, Frank’s youngest daughter, Kim, is pregnant and is due
in May!
We wish you a very Merry Christmas and the Happiest New Year! ... /\

Dear Family and Friends:

The Sissell’s have had a very blessed year. We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary on April 9th.
Our children gave us a very wonderful party. On June 19th, Father's Day, our great grandson,
Atreyu was born. We now have 6 great granddaughters and 2 great grandsons.
In August, we attended a couple of days at the AHSGR convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. While
in Salt Lake City, we went to the family history library. Alton was able to find the Sissell
information that he was looking for. Since then, he has found more documentation on that family
line and also some of his Waits family line. We then traveled to Puyallup, Washington, to attend our
grandson Breydcn Sissell's baptism.
We still volunteer on Tuesday evenings, at the Family History Center in Sacramento, and on
Wednesdays, at the Sacramento Temple. Alton worked at H&R Block earlier this year and plans to
do so again in January 2012. Eleanor keeps plenty busy at home. With 50 years of accumulated
stuff, it will take her quite a few years to whittle it down.
Elizabeth's family is doing well. She has many problems with her back. She has been attending
crochet and quilting groups, making things for needy families. Philip is working and does a lot of
Special Olympic activities. Aaron is still working for the State. Frank still works at the hardware
store.
John's family is doing reasonably well. John is very busy at Intel and Sharon keeps busy doing her
crochet, quilting, and beaded jewelry making. It keeps her mind off her Fibromyalgia pain for
parts of the day. Karina and family are still in Guam, but may be returning later next year. Our
great granddaughters: Leanna, Sarah and Larissa are sure growing. Thomas is still working for
Northrop/Grumman. J.J. is working at the Olive Garden restaurant in Folsom. Jackie has been
taking some art classes this year. She does very well. Nick does construction work and great
grandson Lucas is almost 2 years old.
Andy's family is as busy as families who have young children can be. Grandchildren Breyden and
Caralyn are growing fast and are doing well in school; Emily is about as tall as she will be, since she
is 14 years old now. It won't be long and she will be in high school. Those years seem to go really
fast. Denise is a wonderful housekeeper and cook. It is always nice to get some of her home
cooked meals when we visit.
Kathryn's family is growing up. Mark, Amanda, great grandchildren: Tori and Atreyu, live just
down the street from us. We get to walk Tori to school in the mornings. She is in Kindergarten
and loves it. Michelle is working at Target and going to College. She has a very nice boy friend,
Jared. We always tease her about going to Jared's (also a local jewelry store), when she goes to have
dinner or special events with his family. Morgan is a sophomore in High School. She was very
excited to get her braces off this month. It won't be long and she will be driving.

We are very grateful for all our children, siblings, cousins, my step mom, Grace and all of our
i! !
friends. They are all very dear to us. We are also grateful to live in this free country, the United
States of America. We are grateful for our Savior, Jesus Christ and for our Heavenly Father and the
Holy Ghost that guides us and comforts us in our times of need. 1
! I
We send you all our love and may you all have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year.
Alton and Eleanor Sissell

' June. The right eye vision was still dark. However, she agreed that the
•. right eye in some unknown way helps the left eye to see.
In our conversation about assistance to cure Macular
: i
r
Degeneration, she stated that at the present time, Nutrition leads the
list. I thought to myself, “Hooray for the Garden”. With every meal, we
I serve fresh fruit and fresh vegetables.
Also I have been taking Bilberry capsules and drinking 10 drops
of Bilberry liquid in a cup of water twice a day. I crush the capsules
with my teeth, and discard the covering, as I don’t think the coverings
can be properly digested.
i The frames of my glasses broke and this provoked the
appointment. I ordered new glasses which will be ready in about ten
m
i •
days. However, Eldon glued the frame together with super glue, so my
old glasses are usable.
The last of January, I had become very concerned about my
upcoming ability to deal with complete blindness. I have found a letter
that my sister Fay Callahan had written me in 2003, urging me to learn
Braille. I called the Blind Library to discuss my concerns and the urge
1? to learn Braille. They sent out a completely blind person to teach me. He
; :': became blind overnight, due to an accident, when he was eighteen years
: ::
£ old. Since becoming blind he has traveled all over the world
>
participating in Judo Matches.

It was a stark realization to watch Greg move himself about with
; the help of a cane, and knowing he was in complete darkness. The lady
: that accompanied him was the driver of the car. She also worked with
5
me in the kitchen, placing plastic bumps on the stove to guide the
controls on the stove, and other appliances. She also suggested putting
i:j my hand high above the burners to check if the heat was on or off.
In the computer room, they said some voice techniques were now
available in use with the computer. Greg gave me a card with the Braille
*1 alphabet on it. It is very difficult to learn.

I’m very grateful for my vision throughout my life. I’m flooded
. with memories. I’m particularly happy that I participated in Art lessons
i
i from John Tolman in 1945, in Independence, Missouri. I recall the joy I
had then in discovering more beauty everywhere, detecting shapes,
shadows, and the darks and the lights in all kinds of materials, etc.

A Christmas Sentiment .

b
I have a list of folks I know, all written in a book
And every year when Christmas comes, I go and take a look
And that is when I realize that these names are a part,
Not of the book they’re written in, but of my heart.
For each name stands for SOMEONE who has crossed my path iIt:
some time. .
And in that meeting they’ve become the rhythm in each rhyme.
And while it sounds fantastic for me to make this claim, •2

I really feel that I’m composed of each remembered name.

And while you may not be aware of any special “Link”,
Just meeting you has changed my life a lot more than you think.

For once I’ve met somebody, the years cannot erase

The memory of a pleasant word or of a friendly face. ■i
So, never think my Christmas cards a just a mere routine
Of names upon a Christmas list, forgotten in between.
For when I send a Christmas card that is addressed to you, A .
It’s because you’re on the list of folks I’m indebted to. V N

i
V

For I am but the total of the many folks I’ve met

And you happen to be one of those I never will forget. .. -?■
. t
a*
And whether I have known you for many years or few,
In some ways you have had a part in shaping things I do.
And every year when Christmas comes I realize anew,
The best gift life can offer is meeting folks like you.
And may the SPIRIT of Christmas that forevermore endures
Leave it’s richest blessing in the hearts of you and yours.
