MCI J-Coach eCLIMACOACH System with Solar Panels

Keep your Coach COOL with the engine off

Objectives of eCLIMACOACH HVAC & Solar Panels
• The objective was to create an electrified HVAC system that would maintain the coach’s
interior temperature in warm weather conditions to minimize idle time.

• The electrified HVAC system would be activated to maintain the cooled interior coach
temperature while loading and unloading passengers versus idling the coach.

• The HVAC system will also provide a pre-cooling of the coach prior to operation. The system
is not intended to pull the temperature down as would the main coach HVAC system, but to
remove some of the heat from the vehicle and reduce the interior load on the main coach
HVAC system at startup.

• The electrified HVAC system also provides a supplemental boost to the existing HVAC system
to allow for quicker cooling of the coach at startup and in extreme ambient conditions

• The Solar System was added to help maintain the coach’s batteries(parasitic loads) and assist
the alternator with maintaining the batteries during engine off electrified HVAC run time. This
system also increases run time of the electrified HVAC System

HMI- Human Machine Interface
The electrified HVAC is activated manually
by the HMI (human machine interface)
installed in the driver operation area.

The controller has:

1. on/off button
2. up/down buttons with arrows to adjust
the temperature setting
3. enter button
1. view the hour meter,
2. change temperature (C or F),
3. activate auto start feature,
4. activate Bluetooth control
5. enter service screens.

Test Results
Initial Test Results
Testing was conducted from July 17th to July 20th, 2017 with temperatures
reaching into the 90 degree range

Multiple tests were performed such as a full draw down and operation with
no coach operation to a 30 minute coach operation and then 30 minute coach
off. The variety of tests were established to demonstrate how a coach
operator would use the system.

The results were very favorable and every scenario demonstrated the
capabilities of the system to meet the goals established such as maintaining
coach comfort, reducing idle time and save fuel and maintenance costs.

Payback

• Maintained 70-75 degrees for up to 3 hours on a warm sunny day without

starting the coach(additional run time with addition of batteries)
• System is able to pre-cool the coach and act as a boost to reduce cool
down times.
• Bluetooth enabled system allows for activation without entry into the
coach.
• Decreases idle time resulting in fuel savings and reduced maintenance
• Solar panels maintain batteries and reduce starting loads on the alternator
• Solar panels provide additional power to batteries and reduce normal
electrical load on the alternator
• Reduced engine run time reduces scheduled maintenance
• Reduced emissions due to engine off option versus idling to maintain a
comfortable environment
