Dear Ms. Irene Young Pine,

My name is Lena Archer and I would like to thank you for the opportunity to join your grade 5 class. I am
thrilled that I will be spending the next five weeks for my Professional Semester 1 learning and growing
as a student teacher. This is my third year in a combined English and Education degree. While I love
English and writing, I am enthusiastic to begin the Education portion of my degree in your classroom.

In terms of my experience with teaching, I was a competitive Swim Instructor for three years from 2014-
2017 at Nose Creek Swim Association in Airdrie where I taught competitive lessons for a young age
group. This position truly solidified my love for teaching. I have been a Swim Instructor and Lifeguard at
the City of Airdrie pool for four years which has provided me with a variety of positive experiences. I
have also recently obtained a job as a Lifeguard and Swim Instructor at the University of Lethbridge Pool.
In terms of other experience with kids, I have volunteered at the Airdrie Public Library during the year of
2017 participating in a reading buddy program and helping coordinate library events such as Harry Potter
day. This experience taught me the importance of community collaboration. Many of the events that were
held at the library attracted families, teens and many other individuals. I also volunteered with a Special
Olympics swim club which included planning and teaching lessons to a variety of individuals from all
ages with unique personalities and abilities.

In terms of my other volunteer experience, during the academic year of 2018-2019, I had the honor of
being a member of the University of Lethbridge Community Involvement Committee. I coordinated
volunteer events for residents at the University such as the Dog Walking events for the Prairie Pitbull and
the Lethbridge Animal Shelter. These events included creating waivers, assessing safety conditions,
sending resident wide professional emails to host the event and then leading the event as the main
organizer. I also participated in selling Fiat Stache hoodies for prostate and ovarian cancer and I helped
organize the destress car smashing event during exams at the University of Lethbridge.

On a more personal note, I love to write children’s books and science fiction fantasy novels. I also
thoroughly enjoy reading, painting, drawing, windsurfing, sailing, and hiking. I am an avid lover of the
outdoors and hope to soon explore more photography. Although I am an English major I also love
watching documentaries about the brain and how human being’s function (I probably know way too many
fun facts). I am currently a mom of 7 large house plants and the number seems to increase any time I
decide to walk past the garden center in grocery stores.

I hope to make a positive contribution to your classroom by bringing creativity, energy, passion,
dedication and patience. I am very excited to increase my knowledge about teaching and grow as a future
educator. I look forward to meeting you and your students.

Sincerely,
Lena Archer
