Rationale Statement- Standard #5

Standard # and Title: Standard Five: Application of Content

ii. Essential Knowledge

(2) The teacher understands how current interdisciplinary themes (e.g., civic literacy, health
literacy, global awareness) connect to the core subjects and knows how to weave those themes
into meaningful learning experiences.

Artifact: Foundations Lesson Plan 2

Date of Completion: Spring 2019

Course Completed in: EDUC 212 Foundations of Education

Rationale Statement:

I am placing Foundations Lesson Plan 2 under standard five to serve as an example of how I am
using state curriculum to teach students civic literacy. The lesson is about teaching the roles
and responsibilities of the three branches of the national government. It connects the historical
aspect with relevant knowledge on how the governmental system runs today. Informing
students on the background information of this subject helps them see the relevance with
current events taking place. Students can get a glimpse of how they can be engaged and
exercise their rights within this system. Altogether, the lesson provides the students with a
higher level of awareness to interdisciplinary themes.
