EXPERIMENT 1

TITLE: DIY EXPERIMENT- BALLOON BLOWER

APPARATUS:

Vinegar (Acetic acid)

Baking soda (Sodium hydrogen carbonate)

Plastic bottle

Balloon

PROCEDURES:

1. A suitable amount of white vinegar (acetic acid) were poured into an empty water bottle.
2. A respective amount of baking soda (Sodium hydrogen carbonate) were put into the
balloon.
3. The opening of the balloon were connected to the exit of the water bottle containing acetic
acid and make sure there are no other opening.
4. The balloon were placed straight upward and allow the baking soda to fall and mix with
white vinegar.
5. The balloon will be ‘blown’ without need of physical blowing action.

OBSERVATION DURING THE EXPERIMENT

Based on the experiment that were held, after the balloon containing baking powder were
uplifted, the baking powder then were inserted into the bottle containing vinegar. The baking
powder were poured into the vinegar resulting in the appearance of frizzy bubbles and the balloon
were filled with air causing the balloon were expanded. The baking powder reacted with vinegar
producing carbon dioxide gas that were fill the balloon, causing it to expand to its size depending
on the amount of vinegar and the baking powder that were inserted.

The other reaction that occurs are neutralization between acid and base which are the
vinegar are the acid and the baking powder are the bases.
Other observation that were observed during the experiment are the bottles containing
vinegar releases cold water droplets at the outside of the bottle after the reactions occurred. This
shows that this experiment were involving the endothermic reaction.

The reaction between baking soda and vinegar yields carbon dioxide plus water plus
sodium ion plus acetate ion.

The chemical equation for the overall reaction is:

NaHCO3(s) + CH3COOH (l) → CO2 (g) + H2O(l) + Na+(aq) + CH3COO-(aq)

The carbon dioxide escapes the solution as bubbles.

PRODUCT/CONCLUSION OF THE EXPERIMENT

For the conclusion on this experiment, this experiment are resulting the balloon becoming
expanded by using this two ingredients which are a very exciting experiments. The neutralization
between acid and bases reaction causing the releasing of heat that were filled the balloon. The
vinegar and the baking soda that were left after the reacting resulting the water droplets outside
of the bottle.
EXPERIMENT 2

TITLE: DIY EXPERIMENT- EGG AND VINEGAR REACTION

APPARATUS

Vinegar

Egg

Plastic container

PROCEDURE

1. The raw egg were put into the empty container and make sure there is no cracks on that
egg.
2. The vinegar were poured into the container and ensure the egg shell also covered by the
vinegar completely.
3. The reaction were left to happen for 24 hours.
4. The result were observed after the time period.

OBSERVATION DURING EXPERIMENTS

The egg shell is composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). When calcium carbonate
comes in contact with vinegar which contains acetic acid (CH3CO2H) a chemical reaction occurs.

The first thing that happens is that the carbonate (CO3--) part of calcium carbonate is
protonated by acetic acid to make carbonic acid (H2CO3).

Along with this, the calcium and acetate from calcium acetate.

2 CH3COOH + CaCO3 = H2CO3 + Ca (CH3COO)2.

In the next step, the carbonic acid breaks down to form carbon dioxide and water,

H2CO3 = H2O + CO2.

The overall reaction is just to sum of the two reactions given,

2 CH3COOH + CaCO3 = H2O + CO2 + Ca (CH3COO)2.

CaCO3(s) + 2 CH3COOH (l) Ca (CH3COO)2 (s) + H2O(l) + CO2(g) .

Water and excess vinegar evaporate upon standing. Carbon dioxide (a gas) is released
into the air during the reaction.

PRODUCT/CONCLUSION OF THE EXPERIMENT

For the conclusion on this experiment, at the end of this experiment, we can observe the
reaction of vinegar and the shell of the egg that consist of calcium carbonate which at the end of
this experiment, will producing carbon dioxide in that container. Calcium carbonate reacted to the
acid from the vinegar.
