 Performs detailed process design calculations and process design

simulations, prepares equipment and instrument data sheets, prepares


process flow diagrams, and prepares piping and instrument flow diagrams
 Trains subordinates in the use of process tools and procedures
 Leads various activities related to the process design of specific process units
and supervises work efforts on small projects and proposals
 Reviews design work of subordinate process engineers as delegated by the
lead engineer
 Participates in start-up and technical service field assignments as required
 Performs other assignments as required
 Responsible for leading small projects or studies, as well as areas of larger
plant projects or studies
 Ability to supervise team members and to advise and mentor in areas of
expertise if necessary

 Perform conceptual, FEED, and detailed engineering and design as per
design basis, project specifications, design codes and standards, and internal
standards.
 Design control and safeguarding on P&ID basis, in cooperation with process
systems engineers.
 Preparation of process control deliverables, such as: control philosophy,
control and safeguarding functional specifications, cause and effect diagrams.
 Being able to read Functional Logic Diagrams, preferable also being able to
produce these.
 Contribute to HAZOP and SIL determination.
 Provide input to queries regarding Functional Safety as per international
standard IEC 61511.
 Cooperate with other technical disciplines: process, instrumentation, safety,
mechanical, electrical.
 Providing solutions to queries from automation vendor.
 Perform FAT of the automation software (at automation vendor premises).
 Perform SAT of the automation software (at end-user premises).
 Apply knowledge and skills to a wide range of standard and nonstandard
situations.

To provide technical assurance and support to process engineers working on


contracts.
To lead teams on engineering studies at feasibility and concept design stages, with
full accountability for quality, budget and schedule.
When acting as Lead Process Engineer on FEED and Detailed Design projects to:

 supervise design work carried out by the Process Group


 prepare project deliverables and check work by others in accordance with
company procedures
 approve project deliverables when authorised by the Process Engineering
Technical Authority.
 ensure that the Process group produces safe, economic and technically sound
engineering designs, in accordance with company policy and standards, which
meet the Clients requirements
 work in a collaborative multi-disciplinary project delivery team, through
proactive liaison with other disciplines and to ensure integration of Process
Engineering design requirements into the overall engineering design
 provide technical support during the procurement cycle including evaluation of
tenders and review of supplier documentation
 communicate to team members the project objectives and execution strategies
and provide training as required on company workflow, methods and business
systems
 develop discipline programme activities/deliverables and interdependencies
 plan for adequate resources
 monitor and report design progress and man-hour usage to the project
management team

To develop relationships with Costain Key Account Directors; Capability Account


Leads; customers; supply chain and other third parties.
To represent Costain in client meetings.
To work collaboratively with business development, work winning and marketing
functions to develop and tender new opportunities studies and major projects.
To provide input, for the Process Engineering function, into proposals including
preparation of manhour estimates, execution write-ups and to develop discipline
programme activities/deliverables and interdependencies.
To support the Process Engineering Technical Authority in technical development of
the function driving innovation and continuous improvement in the work processes
and tools used in the department for design work.
To provide Process Engineering support to Construction and Commissioning project
teams as required.
The jobholder shall ensure effective employee working relationships and
communication through:

 Development of productive relationships with colleagues by consultation, team


building, support and guidance
 Informing teams and individuals regularly on organisational performance,
policies and procedures
 Feedback to senior management with comments, recommendations for
performance improvement and barriers to individual and team performance
raised by staff

The jobholder shall assist the Process Discipline Manager in ensuring that staff have
the necessary technical skills and experience appropriate for delivering Process
Engineering on water sector projects undertaken by the company through:

 Providing line management to assigned process engineers


 Supporting the process of recruitment for the Process Engineering
department.
 Assessing staff for technical competence and ensuring that staff are deployed
in line with their skills, experience and agreed level of authority.
 Identification and organisation of training and development needs for direct
line reports taking into account work activities, learning ability and
circumstances. Advising the Process Discipline Manager
 Provision of support and coaching to individuals as required
 Setting of clear performance objectives, with assessment of performance and
delivery of feedback

The jobholder shall ensure personal and corporate compliance with Health and
Safety policy through

 Implementing recognised good practice in Process Safety Management.


 Maintaining awareness of legal and organizational responsibilities regarding
Health, Safety and Environmental issues with respect to employees,
contractors, clients and third parties, ensuring that activities are managed in
accordance with Company policy and client requirements.
 Personal compliance with current company policy, relevant legislation,
company and clients requirements for Health, Safety and Environmental
matters and to work in such a manner not to cause personal harm or injury to
fellow workers, client and subcontractors employees or the environment
 Ensuring that any unsafe or hazardous occurrence is reported to senior
management and Safety, Health & Environmental staff, and that all necessary
investigations and subsequent recommendations are executed promptly

The role is based in the Costain Manchester Office and may require travel to
company, supplier or client offices or sites for business purposes.
