Being Fair While Celebrating Individuality

My beliefs can be boiled down to hold one common theme: Fairness. I believe every

student should have a fair, equitable experience during their education. I will focus on two core

beliefs of mine with regards to fairness. Fairness through differentiation, and through holistic

inclusion within the classroom.

Students should be given the opportunity to do their best on a given task. This may mean

no changes are made to anything that occurs within the classroom, or this could mean that a

student is given the opportunity to display their knowledge in a different way, or through a

different modality. I am a firm believer that everyone deserves a fair equitable chance, that may

be seen through equality, or may not. I want to create a classroom environment that allows the

students to feel safe expressing these concerns or needs with myself or one of their peers in the

classroom. Through set expectations, educate, and behaviour in my classroom I hope that each

student will feel comfortable expressing themselves, sharing about themselves, and building

positive relationships with myself and fellow peers.

The idea of inclusion is very close to my heart. Above and beyond what I have addressed,

I want students regardless of their skill or ability, socioeconomic status, beliefs, culture, and

everything else that makes us unique to feel welcome in my classroom. Everyone should have

the opportunity to build social relationships, have access to support, and feel belonging in the

classroom. I plan to foster all these aspects through my teaching, from simply talking with my

students, to incorporating fun and challenging activities to allow students to work together, and

to emulate positive, inclusive qualities within my own daily interactions with others.
