I. Literature  Students will study both short stories as well as full length novels
and memoirs.
 Students will analyze the elements of plot, character, theme, and
mood, and how those elements evolve over the course of a text.
 Students will work on vocabulary words in context.
 Students will determine underlining meanings of texts using
inferences

II. Writing for different purposes  Students will write for a variety of purposes including to entertain,
persuade, inform, argue, describe, and analyze.
 Students will write in different styles and media including
brochures, storyboards, scripts, speeches, personal narratives,
stories, and essays.
III. Speaking and Listening  Students will engage in a range of collaborative discussions with
diverse partners.
 Students will participate in a variety of speaking tasks such as solo
and group presentations, skits, interviews, and dialogues.
 Students will identify and analyze a speaker’s main idea or
argument and delineate the soundness of his or her supporting
evidence.

IV. Drama/Poetry Unit  Students will begin a basic analysis of poetry and its different
forms.
 Students will use poetic elements to write their own poetry.
 Students will explore the genre of drama: its presentation, analysis,
and reading.
 Students will perform short dramatic scenes as well as reflect
through writing on those scenes.
V. Remedial Grammar & Writing Unit  Students will work through parts of speech, all verb tenses,
prepositions and non-defining vs defining relative clauses.
 Students will explore simple, compound and complex sentences.
 Students will join sentences in different ways using linking words.
 Students will write using the active and passive voice.

VI. Research Unit/ Informational and Expository Writing Unit  Students will learn the basics of internet research.
 Student will learn to decipher reputable vs. disreputable resources.
 Students will learn basic MLA referencing and in-essay citation.
 Students will explore a topic on their own, write using research
methods, and orally present their findings to the class.
