Project 11: Assessment & Evaluation Summary

Data Summation

The survey consisted of a total of 9 questions which were basic content knowledge assessment of 9th

grade level biology. The majority of the questions were multiple choice, but there were a few “more

than one choice are applicable,” as well as a couple true or false questions.

A total of 17 participants responded to the survey, which was made available online via Survey Monkey.

The survey was open from 12-14 November, 2019. The majority of participants (13 total) completed the

survey on 13 November, with 1 participant taking it on 12 November and 3 responses on 14 November.

The questions were as follows:

1. Which of these is NOT a metric unit of measurement?
a. Meters
b. Pounds
c. Liters
d. Grams
2. Enzymes are known as biological catalysts. (T/F)
3. Which organelle makes proteins?
a. Nucleus
b. Lysosome
c. Ribosomes
4. The golgi body _____ proteins and lipids: (Check all that apply).
a. Disassembles
b. Transports
c. Packages
5. Electrons are located inside the nucleus. (T/F)
6. A prokaryote ______. (Check all that apply).
a. Contains a nucleus
b. Does not contain a nucleus
c. Is unicellular
d. Is multicellular
7. What is the first step in the cell cycle?
a. Cytokinesis

b. Meiosis or mitosis
c. Interphase
d. Cell division
8. What is adhesion?
a. When water sticks to other substances
b. When water molecules stick to each other
c. When water does not stick to other substances
d. When water molecules do not stick to each other
9. What is cohesion?
a. When water sticks to other substances
b. When water molecules stick to each other
c. When water does not stick to other substances
d. When water molecules do not stick to each other

Data Analysis

Out of the 9 survey questions, the majority of participants answered Questions 1-3 correctly (76.47%,

82.35%, and 88.24%, respectively). Additionally, only 2 participants of the total 17 participants correctly

answered Question 7 (11.76%). Question 6, which was a two-part question, came in second with the

least amount of correct answers – with 5 participants correctly answered (29.41%). Furthermore,

Question 4 was also a two-part question (like Question 6), and 14 of 17 participants answered only one

part correctly, receiving a half-point. The other 3 participants earned the full point by correctly

answering both parts of the question.

Participants 6 and 14 scored the lowest of all respondents with 2.5 points (total 27.78%). Participant 17

earned the highest score of 8 points (88.89%), and Participants 13 and 15 tied for second highest score

with 7 points (77.78%).

Implications for Instruction

Based on the results of the survey response, more instructional time needs to be spent on the cell cycle

(Question 7). The steps of the cell cycle can be divided and discussed individually, and an exercise of

drawing out the cells during each stage could prove to be beneficial as well. Additionally, researching

and implanting a fun, interactive video or simulation might help students better understand the

concept.

Regarding Question 6, I believe the mistake was in the structure of the question. It was more involved

and required participants to check all answers that applied, but that was not noted on the actual survey.

This may be why many participants earned only a half point.

Lastly, Question 5 needs to be addressed in the classroom instruction as well. Perhaps a review on

atomic structure would be useful or even a diagram next to the question with no labels.
