Formal Activity

Age: 4-year old’s


Type of Activity: Small Group
Primary Literacy Skill:
• Fine motor
• Word awareness,
• Alphabet knowledge
State Standard:
• 1.PK.2 Identify the beginning sound of own name
• 1.PK.3 Identify letters in own name
• 1.PK.3 Identify healthy foods.
Objectives:
• Name the fruit or veggie on their plate.
• Identify the letters in their name.
• Show the beginning letter sounds to the fruit or veggie.
Materials:
• Cutout pieces of fruit/veggies
• Paper plates
• Writing utensils: makers, pencils, crayons, colored pencils, etc.
• Stick glue or bottle glue.
• Labeled fruits/veggies for the students

Activity:
• Students will be invited to the small group table.

• The teacher will then put cutout pieces of fruit or vegetables in front of the students.
• T: “Does anyone here know the sounding sounds of these fruits/vegetables?”
• S: “This one makes an aaa sound for apples”
• S #2: “This is an orange, ooo for orange”
• T: “Great! We will now be making a fruit/veggie salad with our names!”
• The teacher will hand them a paper plate and pull out for fruits/vegies cutouts.
• T: “We are going to be building our name with fruits and veggies”
• T: “For example, my name is Ms. Diaz, I will grad a Dragon fruit for my DDD in Diaz”
“I will grad an Indian fig for iii in Diaz” cont.
• *Remember to cut out enough fruits/vegies for everyone’s names. Also, label the
fruits/vegies so the children can see what that looks like and are called. *
• T: “We are going to write our name of the paper plate first before choosing our
fruits/vegies”
• Students will grab any writing material provided and begging to write.
• Once everyone is done they will choose their fruits and glue them on to the paper.
• T: “Sam, can you tell us what is in your salad bowl?”
• S: I have a strawberry for sss, avocado for aaa, and a mushroom for mmm”
• We will go around the whole table until finished. (Students will have to know the letters
of their name to do this activity.)
Informal Activity #1
Age: 4-year old
Type of Activity: Art Center
Primary Literacy Skill:
• Fine motor
• Alphabet knowledge
• Emergent writing
State Standard:
• 1.PK.2 Identify the beginning sound of own name
• 1.PK.3 Identify letters in own name
• 6.PK.1 Experiment with writing tools and materials to communicate.
• 5.PK.3 Describe or respond to their own creative work or the creative work of others.
Objectives:
• Identify beginning sounds
• Name letters of the alphabet
• Describe what they have drawn/painted
Materials:
• Plastic Fruit/vegetables
• Paint
• Markers/crayons/colored pencils/stamps/stickers
• Construction paper
Activity: *Art Center*
• There will be a table filled with construction paper, paint, and writing utensils.
• Plastic fruit and vegetables will be available for them also.
• I will tell the students they will write about their favorite fruit.
• They will have to have the letter and their writing somewhere on the paper with their
drawings. (They will have to know their alphabet and be able to hold a pencil, etc. to accomplish
this)
• I will explain that they can either dip the fruit into the paint or draw it onto the
construction paper.
• After they are finished, they can sit and explain it to the other students in the center.
Informal Activity #2
Age: 4-year old’s
Type of Activity: Dramatic Center
Primary Literacy Skill:
• Vocabulary
• Word awareness
• Alphabet knowledge
State Standard:
• 1.PK.5 Demonstrate awareness that print carries a message.
• 1.PK.2 Identify the beginning sound of own name.
• 1.PK.3 Act out roles that involve another child(ren) in related role; for instance, mother
and baby, grocer and shopper.
Objectives:
• Name the fruit/vegetables they have on their list.
• Identify the beginning sound to the fruit/vegetables
• Show where the fruit/vegetable belongs in the center by identifying the word with a
picture.
Materials:
• “Farmers Market” – Cubby storage unit
• Cash register
• Clipboards
• Plastic or Felt fruits/vegetables
• Writing utensils- pencils, markers, crayons or colored pencils
• Fruit labels with pictures
• Construction paper
• Basket or tote bags
• Aprons
Activity: *Dramatic Play* We Are Going Grocery Shopping!
• *All fruit/vegetables and the cash register will be labeled before the students go in.
• There is going to be a table beside the “market” with clipboards and paper, students will
be writing their “grocery lists” before going in.
• Once in the market, they can either grab a bask or a tote bag for their fruit or vegetables.
• The student will then take the bask/tote to be checked out by the cashier.
• The cashier then can make up the amount to charge for fruit/vegetable.
• I will remind them to share what they have in their basket. (Students will need to sound
out the first letter of the item)
• Other students can play the mom or dad, grandma or grandpa, etc.
