BLUEPRINT for FINDING EMPLOYMENT FASTER

Step 1 CREATE A GREAT PROFESSIONAL RESUME &

LINKEDIN PROFILE

Your resume is to do only one thing, to get an interview! Your

goal to get someone to contact you. That’s all.

Only submit your resume to jobs that you are actually

qualified to do
You must customize your resume for every resume you
submit to get it pass the Application Tracking System

Match your job responsibilities to the requirements

using their language. If you are doing exactly the
work that’s in the job requirements section, use their
language just like it’s written

When you’re not looking for a job, it can be easy to ignore your
LinkedIn profile, don’t do that!

Use your target job descriptions to your advantage

Take a look at the job descriptions of the positions

you’re after, and dump them into a word cloud tool
like Wordle. See those words that stand out? Make
sure those words and phrases are sprinkled
throughout your summary and experience.
Treat Your Profile Like Your Resume

Your resume isn’t just a list of job duties (or, at least,

it shouldn’t be)—it’s a place to highlight your best
accomplishments. Same goes for your LinkedIn
profile: Make sure your experience section is fleshed
out with bullet points that describe what you did,
how well you did it, and who it impacted.

Step 2 IDENTIFY 25-50 TARGETED LIST OF COMPANIES

How To Build a highly targeted short list of companies

Find companies you always want to work for

Find companies that fit your skill-sets and/or qualifications
No more than 25 – 50 companies
Google search on the following to capture your targeted list of
companies: (top firms in your industry; The Fortune 1000;
Indeed.com)
Glassdoor
Capture these companies and save them in an excel spreadsheet

Step 3 GO TO COMPANY AND FIND JOB OPENING THAT

FITS YOUR SKILLS

Step 4 NETWORKING: GO TO LINKEDIN, SEARCH THAT
COMPANY

Step 5 ASK THEM TO FIND THE HIRING

Step 6 CONNECT WITH THEM AND ASK FOR A 10-MIN

CONVERSATION

Step 7 ASK TO SUBMIT YOUR RESUME TO THE HIRING

MANAGER

NETWORKING VIA LINKEDIN

It’s critical to take the time to build your LinkedIn profile, add
to your connections

Start with your company of choice for your targeted list

Ask LinkedIn to tell you the people in your network who work
for the company. If you have a small network, search on all
people who works for that company

Then, sort the list by

1st, 2nd, Group Members, and 3rd + Everyone Else

connections

Once you find those people, customize your connection

request with a friendly note.

Request informational interviews. Don’t ask for a job. Instead,

ask for a brief phone conversation to seek their job search
advice.

Do your homework. Before an informational interview, learn

about the background and interests of the people you’re
meeting

CONNECTION SCRIPT

Ask for a 10 minute phone conversation. You say: I have two ques-
tions to ask. (1) How did you get in there? (2) Knowing what you know
now, if you were me how would you get employed there? Who would
you talk with? If you are open, what’s a good number to use or if you
prefer, my number is _________. Thank You

After they say yes (and they will), you call them or they call you and
you say: Thank you for the opportunity to talk with me. (Capture all
info they shared). Then ask: Would you mind giving me feedback on
a position that I found, which I think it’s a good fit? Remember, you
found a position that fit your resume and you tweaked it for that
posting. Then send then both your resume and the job positing.

After giving you back their feedback. If they say yes it’s a good fit.
Then ask: Would you mind using your internal system to find out who
is the “Hiring Manager” for this position? (Since you gave them the
positing with the job number, they should be able to do that). And
ask them if possible, could they do it while you wait on the phone?

Once they find the Hiring Manager, ask one last question: Would you
mind submitting my resume to that Hiring Manager as a referral for
me?

NOTE: Remember this statement “People Hire People”! Your job during your job hunt is to
get your resume in front of hiring manager eye-balls and not via a system (Application Tracking
System). If you can do that, then you will be able to get employed faster than your counterpart.
