Seven years had passed and finally the sun would shine on Venus now,

at least that is what the scientists predicted. The nine-year olds stood
waiting by for the rain to stop, but Margot was not with them. She stood
alone in the corner, staring at the rain. The others had been on Venus all
their lives, but Margot had come here only five years ago. She
remembered the sun shining in Ohio better than anyone. She had
different views of the sun. Margot had been mostly quiet here all the
time because she knew she was different and that she did not fit here.
The children had now been waiting for a long time and one of the boys,
William, said “Nothing is happening today. Is it?” All the others agreed.
Margot whispered, ”But this is the day, the scientists predict, they say,
they know, the sun…” But no one heard her, instead, she was locked in
the closet.
The sun came out, the kids all went outside to play in the forest and
enjoy the sun for the two hours in which the sun was out, forgetting all
about poor Margot.
Eventually all the kids came back inside, sad that the sun had gone and it
had started to rain again. That is when they remembered about Margot,
all alone in the closet. Behind the closet door was only silence. They
unlocked the door slowly and let Margot out.
The students had a guilty look on their faces. They knew what they did
was wrong, but could not get themselves to admit their mistakes.
Margot’s head was in her hands, she looked up with eyes filled with
tears and rage. The kids had stolen the day from her when she could be
happy and could see the sun she had waited so long for. She could not
bring herself to say anything to them even though she wanted to shout
her lungs out at them. She just simply got up and sat at her desk.
The children knew that they had done something terrible, but they also
knew that no amount of sorry would fix it for Margot.
“Why did we do it?” a girl asked William.
“I do not know either.”William answered. Before they could further
discuss about this, the class started.
“Okay children, now as we all know that we are running a little low on
budget, I request you all to keep your sun lamps safe and not break them
in any case, because chances of getting a replacement are bleak and you
do not want to roam around in the dark without a lamp.”the teacher said.
At night Margot could not sleep. She kept thinking about how she had
missed the one chance she had of seeing the sun and how her days
seemed even more dark and gloomy now, all because of the other kids.
She wanted revenge.
She heard William snoring nearby and could not help but wonder how
someone could sleep so peacefully after doing something so bad, after
turning someone’s life dark for the next seven years. That is when she
got the perfect plan for revenge.
She quickly got up from her bed, tiptoed across the whole room, picked
up everyone’s sun lamps and slipped out of the room. Outside it was
very dark and the rain was pouring on the roof. Margot silently opened
the closet in which she was locked, and threw all the sun lamps in so
rashly, that all of them broke. Done.
Feeling a bit relieved and at peace, Margot now went back to the room
and slept. Early next morning, she woke up to the sound of children
crying and fussing about their broken lamps and roaming the haunted
hallways in the dark without a lamp.
