My experience in doing the comparative genre analysis assignment was a fairly good one.

The assignment was clear to understand so I did not have any difficulties getting started. When

we were first introduced to the assignment, I immediately gained an idea of how I wanted to

approach it. I approached this assignment with an open mind, meaning I took in all the

information provided by my sources and analyzed it to determine how successful they each were

in using their respective genres to reach their audiences. In other words, I did not just decide

right away what my thesis was going to be without viewing the sources first. My writing process

was pretty long but successful. I, as a writer, like to be very organized and so first, after getting

my sources, I brainstormed ideas of what needed to be discussed in the assignment. Then, I did

an outline on what specifics were going to be included and how it would be organized and

designed. That organization allowed me to smoothly proceed in the process of writing the genre

analysis.

During the writing process, I did make sure to steer away from speaking too much on my

topic, and focus solely on what was wanted, which was to compare my two genres chosen.

Hopefully I succeeded. This process was very similar to a rhetorical analysis assignment I did in

my RWS 1301 course. Both assignments consisted of analyzing a different genre of text,

determining the audience, purpose, and design of the text, whether the text was successful or

unsuccessful in using their genre, and discussing rhetorical appeals. Although the assignment

from 1301 went more into depth about rhetoric and rhetorical appeals, it still seemed a bit similar

to the genre analysis. Overall, I enjoyed the assignment because it taught me to how two

different genres are able to deliver the same information but in different ways. It allowed me to

see how other scholars carry out research in different forms to reach a broader amount of people.

I believe it will be extremely helpful for the remainder of the class because it will help me
deliver information from research assignments to the audience in various ways that appeal to

them.
