SUPERSTITIONS
It is also strong-willed and can give confidence to those who are shy or
lacking in will power.
Being the color of physical movement, the color red awakens our
physical life force.
At its most positive it can create life with its sexual energy, or use its
negative expression of anger and aggression to fuel war and
destruction.
The color red can stimulate the appetite, often being used in
restaurants for this purpose. It also increases craving for food and
other stimuli.
Being surrounded by too much of the color red can cause us to become
irritated, agitated and ultimately angry. Too little and we become
cautious, manipulative and fearful.
In Eastern cultures such as China red is the color for good luck.
Although times are changing and many Chinese brides now wear
white, it is traditionally the color for weddings. In Indian culture it
symbolizes purity and is often used in their wedding gowns.
COLOUR
STUDY
Red is the color at the longer-wavelengths end of the spectrum of
visible light next to orange, at the opposite end from violet. Red color
has a predominant light wavelength of roughly 620–740 nanometers.
Light with a longer wavelength than red but shorter than terahertz
radiation and microwave is called infrared.
Red is one of the additive primary colors of visible light, along with
green and blue, which in Red Green Blue (RGB) color systems are
combined to create all the colors on a computer monitor or television
screen. Red is also one of the subtractive primary colors, along with
yellow and blue, of the RYB color space and traditional color wheel
used by painters and artists. Reds can vary in shade from very light
pink to very dark maroon or burgundy; and in hue from the bright
orange-red scarlet or vermilion to the bluish-red crimson. Red is the
complementary color of cyan.
In nature, the red color of blood comes from hemoglobin, the iron-
containing protein found in the red blood cells of all vertebrates. The
red color of the Grand Canyon and other geological features is caused
by hematite or red ochre, both forms of iron oxide. It also causes the
red color of the planet Mars. The red sky at sunset and sunrise is
caused by an optical effect known as Rayleigh scattering, which, when
the sun is low or below the horizon, increases the red-wavelength light
that reaches the eye. The color of autumn leaves is caused by
pigments called anthocyanins, which are produced towards the end of
summer, when the green chlorophyll is no longer produced. One to two
percent of the human population has red hair; the color is produced by
high levels of the reddish pigment pheomelanin (which also accounts
for the red color of the lips) and relatively low levels of the dark
pigment eumelanin.
Since red is the color of blood, it has historically been associated with
sacrifice, danger and courage. Modern surveys in the United States
and Europe show red is also the color most commonly associated with
heat, activity, passion, sexuality, anger, love and joy. In China, India
and many other Asian countries it is the color of symbolizing happiness
and good fortune.
VARIATONS OF
THE COLOUR
RED:
Scarlet: has a little orange mixed with it, giving it a richness and
brightness. It indicates enthusiasm and a love of life. It is a little less
intense and more fun-loving than true red, tempered with a degree of
defiance.
Red can vary in hue from orange-red to violet-red, and for each hue
there is a wide variety of shades and tints, from very light pink to dark
burgundy.
Scarlet is one quarter of the way between the colors red and orange. It
is the color worn by a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.
The cardinal takes its name from the color worn by Roman Catholic
cardinals.
Crimson is a strong, deep red containing a little blue. The emblem
of Harvard University.
Maroon is a dark brownish red. Its name comes from marron, the
French word for chestnut.[11]
Burgundy, claret, or Wine red, is a very dark red containing a little
blue. In France, this color is known as Bordeaux.

IN EVENTS
Choosing a Red themed wedding, from a colour psychology
perspective, creates passion, energy and excitement.
Red will create a warm and stimulating mood at your wedding with
high energy and lots of action.
Yellow-based reds are “tomato” reds. Blue-based reds are “berry reds.”
Some say that males are more attracted to the tomato reds: females to
the berry reds.
Context is everything when using red. For example, when red is place
on a black background, it glows with an otherworldly fire; on a white
background, red appears somewhat duller; in contrast with orange, red
appears lifeless. Notice that the red square appears larger on black.
Regardless of how it is used in a design, a little bit of red goes a long
way.
HOW RED AFFECTS VISION:
Red captures attention. It is one of the most visible colors, second only
to yellow - which explains why it is used on fire engines and stop signs
to trigger alertness.
Red focuses behind the retina which forces the lens grows more convex
to pull it forward. Therefore, we perceive that red areas are moving
forward. This may explain why red captures attention.
Note: Eight percent of the male population has a red-green color vision
deficiency and cannot see red at all
POLITICAL ASSOCIATIONS OF
RED:
The color red represents the U.S. Republican Party and beginning
with the 2000 presidential election, states that favored the
Republican candidates began being referred to as “red states,”
while those that favored the Democratic candidates were referred

Red is the color most associated with the Soviet Union during
communist reign.
