Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are intertwining disciplines when

applied in the real world. The difference of the STEM curriculum with the other strands
and tracks is the focus on advanced concepts and topics.

Under the track, you can become a pilot, an architect, an astrophysicist, a biologist, a
chemist, an engineer, a dentist, a nutritionist, a nurse, a doctor, and a lot more. Those who
are also interested in Marine Engineering should take this track.

STEM+ PH is the flagship program of Unilab Foundation, which aims to strengthen

STEM education for a smarter Philippines. We believe in nurturing future scientists and

What do you need to know about the STEM

strand?
Technology has been playing a huge role in today’s everyday life. Everything seems to
be going digital and most operations are now moving towards the automated route. Even
education has been affected by this rapid transformation as more unconventional means
of instruction have been developed – from online courses to online file sharing. Because
of the recent technological advancements, there has been an increase in the demand for
professionals in the fields of science and technology.
If building prototypes and robots, crunching numbers, analyzing the ways of life, and all
things tech interest you then the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
(STEM) strand is the right fit for you!
Through the STEM strand, students will get to learn the basics of STEM-related
disciplines such as Calculus, Biology, Physics and Chemistry. Students will get an
overview of the foundation of most STEM fields which basically deal with several
branches of physical, Earth and life sciences, and pure and applied mathematics.

This strand will develop the students’ ability to evaluate simple to complex
societal problems and be responsive and active in the formulation of its solution

through the application and integration of scientific, technological, engineering,
and mathematical concepts as it prepares them to pursue college degrees that
focuses on the enigma of the natural world thereby leading them to become
future scientists, technological analysts and experts, engineers, mathematicians,
programmers, and the like.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics and refers to any
subjects that fall under these four disciplines. Because these things are never straightforward,
there are also dozens of alternative versions of STEM (including STEAM, STREAM and
METALS) but STEM is by far the most widely-used.
The acronym originates from discussions about the lack of qualified graduates to work in
high-tech jobs in the US. Since its creation, governments and universities around the world
have made attracting students to STEM courses a priority, in order to address this shortfall. In
some cases, it’s also easier to immigrate to another country if you studied a STEM subject at
degree level and are looking for work in that field.

STEM is an educational program developed to prepare primary and

secondary students for college and graduate study in the fields of
science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In addition
to subject-specific learning, STEM aims to foster inquiring minds, logical
reasoning, and collaboration skills.
Bauan Technical High School

In the United States, the program helps immigrants with skills in the
STEM subjects obtain work visas. In addition, STEM focuses on
perceived education quality shortcomings in these fields, with the aim of
increasing the supply of qualified high-tech workers.

Educators break STEM down into seven standards of practice (or skill
sets) for educating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
students:

 Learn and apply content

 Integrate content

 Interpret and communicate information

 Engage in inquiry

 Engage in logical reasoning

 Collaborate as a team

 Apply technology appropriately

STEM, in full science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, field

and curriculum centred on education in
the disciplines of science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics (STEM). The STEM acronym was introduced in
2001 by scientific administrators at the U.S. National Science
Foundation (NSF). The organization previously used the acronym
SMET when referring to the career fields in those disciplines or a
curriculum that integrated knowledge and skills from those fields.
In 2001, however, American biologist Judith Ramaley, then
assistant director of education and human resources at NSF,
rearranged the words to form the STEM acronym. What is
STEM?
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM is important because it
pervades every part of our lives. Science is everywhere in the world around us. Technology is
continuously expanding into every aspect of our lives. Engineering is the basic designs of roads and
Bauan Technical High School
bridges, but also tackles the challenges of changing global weather and environmentally-friendly
changes to our home. Mathematics is in every occupation, every activity we do in our lives. By
exposing students to STEM and giving them opportunities to explore STEM-related concepts, they
will develop a passion for it and hopefully pursue a job in a STEM field. A curriculum that is
STEM-based has real-life situations to help the student learn. Programs like Engineering For Kids
integrates multiple classes to provide opportunities to see how concepts relate to life in order to
hopefully spark a passion for a future career in a STEM field. STEM activities provide hands-on and
minds-on lessons for the student. Making math and science both fun and interesting helps the student
to do much more than just learn.

Why STEM Education?

“In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as
we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To
succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their
capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.” (National
Science Foundation)

Who benefits from STEM?

STEM education helps to bridge the ethnic and gender gaps sometimes found in math and science
fields. Initiatives have been established to increase the roles of women and minorities in STEM-
related fields. STEM education breaks the traditional gender roles. In order to compete in a global
economy, STEM education and careers must be a national priority. Each and every decision made
uses an aspect of STEM to understand the implications.

In conclusion, STEM education is critical to help the United States remain a world leader. If STEM
education is not improved, the United States will continue to fall in world ranking with math and
science scores and will not be able to maintain its global position. STEM education in school is
important to spark an interest in pursuing a STEM career in students. However, teachers do not carry
the whole burden of STEM education. Parents also must encourage their children to pursue STEM
activities and increase awareness and interest at home and in extracurricular activities of the merits of
STEM education.

STUDENTS moving up to senior high school are encouraged to take the science,
technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) strand to help the country be a leader in
innovation and competitiveness.

National ICT Confederation of the Philippines (NICP) president Antonio del Carmen
described the senior high students taking Stem courses as the “future of the country” with
the rise of technological disruptions.

“As the government addresses talent supply through the

K+12 education program, we see the Stem strand
offered in senior high as an important factor that will
help the country produce innovators,” said del Carmen.

He stressed that it’s a must for the country to be

innovation-driven to continue attracting investments,
pushing the workforce toward higher value services and
contributing in the national economic development.

Today’s technologies like artificial intelligence,

Internet-of-Things and virtual reality are dependent on
people who are Stem-educated.

Stem education is a big help in pushing the country up

and being competitive with its Asean counterparts,
which are developing their own ICT industries, said the
Department of Information and Communications
Technology.

Lack of innovation and digital transformation in local

government units (LGUs) were some of the factors that
pulled the ranking of Cebu from the 7th to 12th spot in
the last Tholons survey.

Cib.O managing director Wilfredo Sa-a Jr. said the

industry, LGUs, and the academe are now working to
regain the top spot and to reshape the workforce,
starting off with the senior high graduates, on top of the
up-skilling efforts of companies for their existing
employees to handle more complicated tasks.

“We are providing all sorts of training for them to be

employable in the ICT industry and excel,” said Sa-a.

Meanwhile, Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III

underscored the need for the country’s workforce to
adapt to technology-driven change in anticipation of
new jobs that would require up-skilling workers to
prevent them from being out of work as a result of
disruptive digital innovations.

Dominguez, in a statement, said that while new

Bauan Technical High School

technologies “destroy” certain traditional jobs, workers

should be prepared for a future of continuous learning
to remain relevant and productive in today’s world of
disruptive technologies.

“We should embrace innovation. We should look at the

bright side, but again, provide safety nets for those who
cannot catch up all the time,” said Dominguez during
the Governors’ Seminar as part of the activities of the
51st ADB Annual Meeting held last week in
Mandaluyong City..

According to the Finance chief, governments should

deal with the impact of technology-driven progress on
its labor force by encouraging the private sector,
through the grant of incentives, to upgrade the
knowledge and skills of workers.

Governments should also ensure that micro, small and

medium enterprises (MSMEs) are able to take
advantage of disruptive technologies by providing them
with access to these new tools, such as faster internet
connectivity that would enable them to transact

business online or through cashless systems like the use

of QR codes. (KOC) Student Perceptions of

DESCRIPTION

Attitudinal data were gathered from 364 high school students participating in a
residential science and mathematics program on a university campus in which
participating students finish their last 2 years of high school in conjunction with
their first 2 years in college. Instruments employed assessed dispositions toward
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) content and careers.
Dispositions were analyzed in comparison to data gathered on the same
instruments from other groups of students and teachers. Findings included that the
residential early admissions students had STEM dispositions more similar to
STEM professionals and less similar to traditional high school students. Analyses
of disaggregated data characteristics based on attributes such as gender are also
presented.
