THE PREMINENT COURSES THAT STEM STUDENTS PREFER TO TAKE IN COLLEGE

CHAPTER 1

The Problem and it’s Background

Introduction:

AMA University, formerly known as AMA Institute of Computer Studies (AMA), was founded

in 1980 by Dr. Amable R. Aguiluz V, who named the institution after his father’s initials Amable

Mendoza Aguiluz, Sr. The school initially offered short-term courses in Electronic Data Processing

Fundamentals, Basic Programming, and Technology Career. Since then, AMA has become the pioneer in

IT education and currently provides the largest computer education system in the Philippines. The

university is a member of the AMA Education System (AMAES) which manages several other

educational institutions such as ACLC, ABE International Business College, and St. Augustine School of

Nursing among others.

At present, AMA has 41 branches spread across the country, offering courses in Computer

Studies, Engineering, Business Administration, and Arts and Sciences. In addition to these, the school

also provides graduate programs. The university specializes in information, electronic, and

communication technology programs. It has also established the AMA University Online Education, the

first full online education in the country providing access to educational opportunities for individuals

across the globe.

Continuing its vision of providing quality education that works, AMA University ensures a 1: 1

student-to-computer ratio, thus ensuring a rich hands-on training experience for every student. AMA is

recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as a Center of Development in Information

Technology and is ISO 9001:2008 Certified for all its programs.

AMA Computer College Tarlac was one of its branch in the Philippines and across the country.

AMACC Tarlac Campus was established in the year of 1980. During this time, it mainly offers courses

for college students based on information and technology education or any related services in the global

market.

In 2012, the Department of Education (DepEd) administered a shift to a fresh learning scheme —

the K to 12 basic education program. Many people were resistant to the new education system. Despite

this, the government is keen on revolutionizing the Philippine education. Here’s an update on how the

government prepared in implementing the new education curriculum.

By that year, AMA Schools and Universities implemented the Senior High to the students from

private and public schools. AMA offers Academic Track that composes the different strands which are,

General Academic Strand (GAS), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), Accountancy Business and

Management (ABM), Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). AMA also offers

Technical Vocational Course for the Information and Technology students.

The main focus of this research was mainly on Science, Technology, Engineering,

and Mathematics. STEM schools and programs approach these key educational subjects in an integrated

way so that elements of each subject are applied to the others. STEM-focused learning programs span

from preschool through college masters degree programs, depending on resources within a given school

district or region. Let's take a closer look at STEM and what parents need to know to determine if a

STEM school or program is the right choice for your child.

STEM is a growing movement in education, not just in the United States but around the world.

STEM-based learning programs are intended to increase students' interest in pursuing higher education

and careers in those fields. STEM education typically uses a newer model of blended learning that

combines traditional classroom teaching with online learning and hands-on learning activities. This model

of blended learning aims to give students the opportunity to experience different ways of learning and

problem-solving.

Classes in the science category of STEM programs should look familiar and include biology,

ecology, chemistry, and physics. However, your child's STEM-focused science class is not the kind of

science class you might remember. STEM science classes incorporate technology, engineering, and math

into scientific studies.

For some parents, the closest thing to technology classes may have been playing learn-to-type

games during occasional computer lab sessions. Technology classes have definitely changed and may

include topics like digital modeling and prototyping, 3D printing, mobile technology, computer

programming, data analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, and game development.

Much like technology, the field and scope of engineering has grown considerably in the last few

decades. Engineering classes might include topics like civil engineering, electronics, electrical

engineering, mechanical engineering, and robotics--topics many parents could not have imagined learning

as early as elementary school.

Similar to science, mathematics is one STEM category with classes that will sound familiar, such

as algebra, geometry, and calculus. However, STEM math has two main differences from the math

parents remember. First, kids are learning more advanced mathematics at younger ages with introductory

algebra and geometry starting as early as third grade for some students in general, even those not enrolled

in a STEM program. Second, it bears little resemblance to math as you may have learned it. STEM math

incorporates concepts and exercises that apply science, technology, and engineering to mathematics.
STEM has become a buzzword in education. Many people have a superficial understanding of

STEM learning programs, but few grasp the impact it has on the larger picture of education in America.

In some ways, STEM education is a long-overdue update to our overall education system intended to

bring kids up to speed on the skills and knowledge most relevant in today's society. STEM initiatives also

do more to reach and encourage girls and minorities that may not have shown interest in STEM subjects

in the past or may not have had strong support to pursue and excel in STEM subjects. In general, there is

a true need for all students to be more literate in the areas of science and technology today than in

previous generations because of the way technology and science are influencing and shaping our daily

lives. In these ways, STEM education has earned its buzzword status.

While few would argue that changes to the education system in the U.S. have been necessary for

some time and that further changes are needed, there are some educators and parents with criticisms of

STEM worth considering. Critics of STEM believe the in-depth focus on science, technology, engineering,

and math shortchanges students learning and experience with other subjects that are also important, such

as art, music, literature, and writing. These non-STEM subjects contribute to brain development, critical

reading skills, and communication skills. Another criticism of STEM education is the notion that it will

fill a coming shortage of workers in fields related to those subjects. For careers in technology and many

careers in engineering, this prediction may be true. However, careers in many scientific areas and in

mathematics currently have a shortage of jobs available for the number of people seeking employment.

II. STATEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVE

This chapter aims to determine the population of students in AMACC Tarlac under STEM

Department who will taking up the in-demand courses of Engineering, Medicine, Architecture and other

courses related in college.

This sought to determine the following;

1. To determine the number of STEM students that will take.

1.1 Engineering

1.2 Architecture

1.3 Medicine

1.4 Other related courses, specify.

2. To determine why the students choose the preferred course.

III. SIGNIFANCE OF THE STUDY

This study hopes to establish and choose the preeminent courses that STEM students prefer take

in college. Furthermore, the study could be important to the following

STEM Students. The information presented will enabled them to choose accordingly on different

proposed course in college, through this study, they will be able to see the preferred degree they want to

have, skip from shifting and staying in one course

Teachers. The outcome of the study will benefit them to facilitate the students where they want to be

Administration. The situation portrayed in this study will assist academic administrators, college

a review.

IV. SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The scope of this study is conducted mainly to focuses to the students of the STEM strand.

Furthermore, it only attempted to know the preeminent courses that STEM students prefer to take in
college. Out of 203 students stimulated along 100 students who surveyed are STEM students both Grade

11 and 12 in the higher education institution of AMA Computer Colleges Tarlac City during the year

2018-2019.

V. DEFINITION OF TERMS

Architecture - is the sister course of engineering. Architecture is part of Stem curriculum, same as

engineering they both process and product of planning, designing, and constructing.

Blended Learning- AMA schools and universities was the first school in the Philippines and across the

country who is offering a blended learning. They offer this wherein the learning of the students are not

just only in a traditional way but also by the use of technology. From this, students can learn

independently.

Career- the potential careers of STEM students are to be a engineer, mathematician, doctor or any

courses related on medicine. These are the professions you can choose. When you choose to study in high

level courses which is the STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics).

Engineering - focuses in mathematics. Stem mathematics teach Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry and

Statistics. Stem students are potential engineer and mathematicians. One of the majority reasons of the

students taking Stem course is their prospect course in college such as civil engineering, electrical,

mechanical engineer or education in mathematics.

Medicine-Stem one primary teaching is Science. Such as physics, biology, chemistry, and earth science.

One of the reason why students taking the STEM is, the course covered this subjects that help the students

to cope up and give briefing for there courses in college. Such as doctor, nurse, pharmacist, surgeon,

psychiatrist and other courses related to medicine.

Preeminent- students have their own decisions that they need to choose what is better for them to make

sure that they will learn a lot and to make sure also that they can do everything. Follow your brain not
always your heart if you think that if is better compare other, grab it but to make sure that you love what

you are doing. On the wings of love, stay with me and believe that everything happens for a reason and I

thank you.

Senior High- a new education system. The senior high offer advance education such as the Accountancy

Business and Management, Information Communication and Technology, Humanities and Social

Sciences and the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics. These courses are the first step in

college which is to impart students for their future courses.

STEM-is an academic track. A course for higher education. such as engineering, medicine, architecture,

computer processing and other courses related to Science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Students should have knowledge either ideas about Science and mathematics. Stem advancing the

knowledge of students to the course that they will take in college.

Technology- STEM is a product of technology, because of the technology the teaching for higher

education become easier. Teaching it at early year become possible.
