Education plays an important role in human life, it brings us knowledge

on the things we need in order to survive in the modern world, it also help us

understand how life goes and how we should interact with the people around us.

As time pass by, there had been many changes in how humans live and on how

our education system works. In order to cope up with the never ending evolution

of technology and innovation the education system should also evolve, one key

solution that the government see is the implementation of K-12 Curriculum. The

implementation of the K-12 program had been an issue in the Philippines,

Filipino citizens, teachers, students, young and old, employed and unemployed,

had their own opinions and perspectives with regards to this education reform.

The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic

education (six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and

two years of Senior High School [SHS]) to provide sufficient time for mastery of

concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary

education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship.

The K-12 curriculum is designed to enable graduates to join the work

force after high school, and suitably prepare those who want to pursue higher

education. The new curriculum will also support college graduates who seeks for

work abroad. Developed countries; according to the Department of Education

(DepEd) briefer, view the ten years education cycle as insufficient. (The

Asianparent Philippines)
Bauan Technical High School
The K-12 offered four kind of track for the student to choose. The four

kind of tracks is the Sports Track, Arts and Design Track, Technical-Vocational

Livelihood Track and the Academic Track. The Academic track was build with

different strand to choose. The Accountancy and Business Management Strand

(ABM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), General Academic Strand

(GAS) and lastly the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

(STEM)

Rouse states that STEM is an educational program developed to prepare

primary and secondary students for college and graduate study in the fields of

science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In addition to

subject-specific learning, STEM aims to foster inquiring minds, logical reasoning,

and collaboration skills. In the United States, the program helps immigrants with

skills in the STEM subjects obtain work visas. In addition, STEM focuses on

perceived education quality shortcomings in these fields, with the aim of

increasing the supply of qualified high-tech workers. (Retrieved July 19, 2017

According to Cruz (2014), Senior High School (SHS) students opting to

take the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Strand

have a set of core subjects slightly different from those taking the other strands

(Accountancy, Business, and Management; General Academic; and Humanities

and Social Science).

This study aims to deeper the researcher’s knowledge about the basis of

the Grade 12 students on choosing their strand. Eighty (55) random Grade 12

Senior High students from Bauan Technical High School are the respondents of

the research. This will help the researchers understand and in the same time,

help the students and teachers through giving the recommendations.

The researchers may help other students who will enroll in Senior High on

how to choose the strand that suites them. They may also help by giving the

researchers the basis on choosing the strand in Senior High. The researchers

can help some teachers and students who possess the same situation in the

study. This study will ensure the capability of the researchers to seek solutions

and recommendation in the situation.

This study could also be a guide in the community to let the

constituents to be more active in some technology based instructional materials.

And attain unity in the community.

There are three (3) available strands in Bauan Technical

High School (STEM, ABM, TVL) that the incoming grade 12 students may

choose, those strands are available under the Academic and the Technical-

Vocational Livelihood track. The Grade 12 STEM student of Bauan Technical

High School has 8 sections. The student in the strand of STEM has a large

number than the other strand available in the school.

Students on the Grade 12 STEM student have their own basis on why

they choose the STEM strand. It may help them in their future courses or it may
Bauan Technical High School
be because it was the influence of the other people. It is the reason why the

researcher wants to know the basis of why they choose STEM above all other

strands.

The researcher decided to involve five (5) students on each sections of

the Grade 12 STEM students. With the total of 55 students from all Grade 12 in

order to find the basis of the Grade 12 student on choosing the academic strand

STEM. This study will focus on the basis of the 55 respondents in choosing

academic strand STEM at Bauan Technical High School. The limitation lies on

the researchers own analysis and interpretation of the result. The results of this

study were naturally device from researchers finding as revealed from the result

of the study.

The result of this study will be of great help to the student of Bauan

Technical High School, parents, teachers, and the future researcher.

To the Student of Senior High School, it will be of great help to know the

basis of choosing the academic strand STEM in senior high. They may also

know the benefits of choosing the academic strand STEM.

To the teachers, it will give information of why student choose the

academic strand STEM than the other strand. It will also give information of

basis or reason of the student in choosing the strand.

To the parents, it will also be a great help for them on guiding their

children in choosing the preferred strand on senior high.

And lastly to the future researcher, this research can serve as their guide

through information and result that will relate to the topic.

Objectives of the Study

This quantitative research entitled “Basis of Grade 12 Students on

Choosing Academic Strand STEM” sought to achieve the following objectives:

To determine and analyze the basis of Grade 12 students on choosing the

Academic strand STEM. And also to determine which of the given basis has the

strongest influence to the Grade 12 students in choosing their strand.

Literature Review

The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic

education (six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and

two years of Senior High School )to provide sufficient time for mastery of

concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary

education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship.

Senior High School is two years of specialized upper secondary education;

students may choose a specialization based on aptitude, interests, and school

capacity. The choice of career track will define the content of the subjects a

student will take in Grades 11 and 12. SHS subjects fall under either the Core

Curriculum or specific Tracks. (Retrieved July 20, 2017 from

The School of Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

(STEM) focuses on providing opportunities of study for students who express

interest in the above disciplines in preparation for post-secondary study or for

entry into related professions.  The science strand guides students with a

particular interest in scientific fact and methodology. Students become involved

Bauan Technical High School
with all aspects of the scientific process and develop a solid proficiency in

foundation knowledge. From there, students have the opportunity to further

explore and study various specialized scientific methodologies including earth-

based sciences, genetic studies, biology, chemistry, physics, environmental

science and forensics.  Students within this strand are guided accordingly for

post-secondary studies and post-secondary career opportunities. The

engineering strand exposes students to an environment of real-world learning

situations and hands-on experiences. Students are engaged through a

combination of activities that are project and problem based. The learning

environment prepares students to solve real-life problems and participate as part

of a team, as a team leader and a public speaker and to conduct research,

understand real-world impacts, analyze data and learn outside the classroom.

According to Meyrick (2011), Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics (STEM) education has emerged as one of the most sought after

curriculum designs for integrating science, technology, engineering, and

mathematics into K-12 education. It first became popular as a means of serving

the needs of mathematically gifted students, providing opportunities to both

accelerate learning and increase the rigor and depth of learning. Senior High

provides advance classes that may tackle in college. The students will motivate

to study because of the advance lesson that may tackle in their classroom. The

students will also develop the learning and reasoning skills by the advance

lesson.(Retrieved July 20, 2017 from

Wang X. in her study about why students choose STEM majors. she

draws upon social cognitive career theory and higher education literature to test

a conceptual framework for understanding the entrance into science,

technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors by recent high school

graduates attending 4-year institutions. Results suggest that choosing a STEM

major is directly influenced by intent to major in STEM, high school math

achievement, and initial post-secondary experiences, such as academic

interaction and financial aid receipt. Exerting the largest impact on STEM

entrance, intent to major in STEM is directly affected by 12th-grade math

achievement, exposure to math and science courses, and math self-efficacy

beliefs—all three subject to the influence of early achievement in and attitudes

toward math. Multiple-group structural equation modeling analyses indicated

heterogeneous effects of math achievement and exposure to math and science

across racial groups, with their positive impact on STEM intent accruing most to

White students and least to underrepresented minority students. (Retrived July

According to Cruz (2014), the Commission on Higher Education

(CHED) Technical Panel on Engineering, by the way, has decided to decrease

the number of college years it normally takes to acquire an engineering degree.

Right now, it takes five years after high school. Students who finish Grade 12, on

the other hand, will need only four more years to finish their engineering degree.

In Eremie’s study on comparative analysis of factors influencing career

choices among senior secondary school students in Rivers State, Nigeria

(2014). The result showed that there were significant differences in the career

preferences when grouped according to their sex, parity, and parental influence.

In addition, socioeconomic background were influential in participants' decisions

to pursue a post-secondary degree. Cultural factors, especially English fluency,

were also relevant. It is not about the profile of the respondents that influenced

the decision to the post-secondary degree but is is the culture.

While in 2009 Leonard’s study on high school students' course selection

decisions in south Carolina found out that parents and teachers are highly

influential in the course selection decision. The parents and the teacher are the

one that influence the students to choose the course in college. It is not the

student’s choice but the other person. In addition, Heilbronner (2011) claimed

that the greater number of the students manifested to proceed to STEM courses

in college. This is brought about with the quality, adequacy of preparations and

scholastic experiences of the students. It is the student’s choice to proceed on

STEM because of the quality of the students and the experience that they have.

On Witko’s studies on senior high school students' occupational

aspirations (2006), he found out that interests, skill, personal meaning,

challenges and parental support are variables contributory to the occupational

aspirations of senior high school students. Because of the support of the other

people students tend to inspire in school and study hared. In like manner with

the study of La (2009) on factors influencing the educational and career choices

of senior high school students revealed that parent’ supports, school structure,

gender and grade point average have considerable influence on the Vietnamese
