College of Arts and Sciences breaks the “curse”

With fiery passion and undying determination, College of Arts and Sciences (CAS)
was finally hailed as the over-all champion in the recently concluded University Week in
Notre Dame of Marbel University held last September 3-7, 2019. It accumulated a total of
247.4 golds earning the highest spot after thirty-nine years, followed by the College of
Education (CED) with 232.90 golds, College of Business Administration (CBA) with
232.35 golds, and College of Engineering and Technology (CET) with 220.875 total
accumulated golds.

With the theme, “Marista: Beloved, Gifted, and Empowered,” the celebration
started with a Eucharistic Celebration in the morning of September 3. The colorful Grand
Parade was conducted in the afternoon along Alunan Avenue where the students had the
chance to flaunt their colleges- Red Hawks, Blue Phoenix, Golden Dragons, and Green
Griffins- with their color-coded college shirts and giant floats. As they say, “Rain or Shine,
the show must go on,” which was proven when amidst the heavy rain outside, the
participants still went on with their show and exhibited the ethnic dances which signaled
the formal start of the exhilarating days.

The second day marked the start of all the indoor and outdoor sports events. Also,
one of the most awaited competitions during the University Week, the Speech Choir in
Theater, which according to some alumni present, actually gave them ‘Goosebumps’
running through their spines. On the third day Maristas and even the Alumni looked
forward on the “Night of the Dances" which include the Folk Dance, Lyrical Hiphop,
Contemporary Dance and Team Ballroom.

In Day 4, the Lip Sync Musical Play competition and the most awaited part of the
celebration- the Search for Mr. and Ms. University Week 2019- was held that day. The
NDMU gymnasium was filled with screams and cheers. Yet, only one male and one
female were crowned that night and it was a celebration for the Red Hawks and Green
Griffins as they got a back-to-back title of Mr. NDMU for the College of Arts and Sciences
and Ms. NDMU for the College of Business Administration. Big events like the Yelling and
Cheerdance Competition, Audio-visual presentations, and the Battle of the Bands were
held in the last day. Then the awarding of over-all champion in this year’s University Week
was anticipated, where the College of Arts and Sciences- Red Hawks flew the highest
among all the colleges and broke its 39 years of being at the bottom.
"The victory of the College of Arts and Sciences is not the council's effort alone but
because of the active student participation and the unending support and motivation of
the CAS Faculty and Staff. We made history. We all share success," said by CAS
Governor Allan Mandi.
