INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
Write your name, center number and candidate number at the top of this page.
There are two (2) questions in this paper. Answer both questions. You should show the essential
steps in any calculation and record all the experimental results in the spaces provided in the
question paper.

Q1. Solution P is an aqueous solution prepared by reacting a metal oxide with excess hydrochloric
acid, HCl. In preparing P, 3.36 g of the metal oxide was completely reacted in 1.00 dm3 of 0.200
mol/dm3 hydrochloric acid (HCl) in excess.
M O(s) +2HCl(aq) M Cl2(aq) + H2O (l)
You are to determine the amount of the acid remaining in P by titrating Q with P. Solution Q is
0.0640 mol / dm3 sodium hydroxide, NaOH.
(a). Put P into the burette. Pipette a 25 cm3 (or 20.0 cm3) portion of Q into a conical flask. Put 2
to 3 drops of the indicator provided into Q. Record your results in the table given below, repeating
the titration as many times as you consider necessary, in order to achieve consistent results.

Summary
Tick (√) the best titration results.
Using the ticked results, calculate the average volume of P.
Show your working.
The average volume of solution P required was ..............................................cm3. [1].
The Volume of solution Q used was ................................................................cm3. [1]

Q2. In this investigation you have to make time measurements using a stopwatch or clock.
Attach a small metal ball (called a bob) to a piece of string, and suspend it as shown in figure
below.

Pull the bob a small distance to one side, and then release it so that it oscillates to and fro
through a small angle.
i. Find the time for the bob to make five complete oscillations;
one oscillation is from A to O to B to O to A.

ii. Repeat the timing for the same number of oscillations and work out the average.
……………………………………………………………………………………………. [2]
iii. The time for one oscillation is the period T. Find the period for one complete oscillation.

iv. The frequency f of the oscillations is the number of complete oscillations per second and
Equals 1/T. Calculate f.
