Task 1:

Volumetric Analysis (Titration)

1. P is a solution of Sulphuric (H2SO4) acid of unknown concentration.
Q is a 0.10mol/dm3 sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution.
In this experiment, you are going to determine the concentration of sulphuric acid by
titration.
a. Put P in the burette. Pipette a 25.0cm3 portion of Q into a conical flask and titrate
with P using the indicator provided.
Repeat your titration procedure so that you have Three (3) accurate titrations.
Calculate and indicate the average value in the summary below

The results: Burette readings in cm3

Volume of P used
[6]

Average volume of P used is ……………………………………………..cm3 [1]

b. (i) Calculate the number of moles of NaOH in the pipetted volume of Q.

Number of moles of NaOH in Q= …………………………………….mol. [2]

(ii) Write a balanced chemical equation with state symbols for the reaction
between sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution and sulphuric acid (H2SO4).

[2]
(iii) Using the balanced chemical equation and your answer in (i) above, calculate
the number of moles of H2SO4, which reacted with the volume of Q pipetted.

Number of moles of H2SO4 in P= …………………………………….mol. [2]
(iv) Using your answers to b (iii) above, calculate the concentration of sulphuric
acid (H2SO4) in P. Use your titration average volume

Concentration of H2SO4 in P = …………………………………mol/dm3 [2]

Conclusion: …..........cm3 of ……….mol/dm3 Q requires ………..cm3 of ………..mol/dm3 P
