QUESTION 1

In this experiment you will investigate the refraction of light through a Glass Block.

(a) (i) Place a rectangular block of glass in the middle of plain sheet of paper provided and
draw and mark its outline ABCD as shown below. [2]

(ii) Remove the bock and draw the perpendicular to AB, NN [1]

(iii) Mark out an angle of 200 from NN as shown in the figure above and draw a line XY.
[1]

(v) Stick two pins P1 and P2 in the line XY.

(b) Replace the block in its outline ABCD.

Look through the side CD of the block, fix two pins P3 and P4 such that the two pins are
one behind the other, in a straight line with the images of P1 and P2.

(c) Remove the pins and the Glass Block

(i) Join the points P3 and P4 and extend the line to meet CD.

(ii) Join the lines XY and P3 and P4.

(iii) Mark out and lable Q1 and Q2 as shown in the figure above, measure and record
the values of Q1 and Q2 in the answer booklet. [1]

d) Repeat the experiment on the same outline of the glass block ABCD but with values of the
angles of incidence equal to 300,400,500 and 600 respectively.

e) (i) Find the values of sinQ1 and sinQ2 for all the angles (that is incidence and the refracted)
and complete the table below in the answer booklet provided.

(ii) Plot the graph of sine sinQ2 against sinQ1 and determine the gradient of the graph. [4]

(iii) What does the gradient of the graph represent? [2]

(iv) what conclusion can be drawn from the result? [2]

(v) State one precaution which you took? [1]

(vi) Give one everyday application of refraction of light [1]
