Dracula Compare and Contrast Film Review Mini-Essay

Directions: After viewing Tod Browning’s Dracula (1931) and Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram
Stoker’s Dracula (1992), write a detailed and thorough review which discusses the strengths and
weakness of both filmic interpretations of Stoker’s novel in conjunction with how they stack up
to the original source material.

Questions that should be answered:

● Which version is the most faithful to the book?
● How do these two different takes on this classic piece of literature vary and differ from
one another as well as the text?
● Which film accurately displays more of the subtext of the novel (IE sex/sexuality, gender
issues, homoeroticism, superstition vs science, post-colonialism, etc.)?
● Which portrayal of Dracula do you prefer more--Bela Lugosi or Gary Oldman? Why?

To get full credit, you will need to be specific in your description of either movie. Meaning that
you need to make sure to name names of directors, actors, and so on. Try to keep a formal tone
as well.

For example:
Do-- Keanu Reeves portrayal of Jonathan Harker in Coppola’s film seems not to be his best
work.

Don’t-- The dude who came out as Neo in The Matrix kinda drops the ball in the movie.

Also, don’t use the first person (5 points will automatically be deducted if the first person
pronoun “I” appears anywhere in your assignment).

Feel free to comment on additional elements of the film like music, costuming, special effects, et
al.

Length: five paragraphs or approximately 1-½ pages to 2 pages, MLA Format, and include a
couple of photos of the movies (optionally).

See syllabus for due dates.
