Control Design Process

6 Months, 200 Projects Later…

Why this presentation
+ The current system isn’t working
+ Power vs information
+ The cost is time and money
1. Basic process

1 Identify and label lighting zones

2 Place power packs

Place occupancy/vacancy
3
sensors
4 Place photocells

5 Place switches/wallpods

6 Add circuiting information

1. Identify and label lighting zones
+ A lighting zone is a group of lights configured to
operate together
+ Daylight zones create unique lighting zones
+ Plug load control requirements should be counted as a
zone
+ Label lighting zones if more than one in a space
1. Identify and label lighting zones
2. Place power packs
+ Standard power pack can control 16 A of load
+ Dimmable lighting zones may require multiple power
packs
+ Lighting zones with fixtures on an inverter require
emergency power pack
+ Keynote explaining that emergency lights require UL924 device
+ Match power packs to lighting zones with labels or
wires

per power pack

3. Place occupancy sensors
+ Use cheat sheet to select appropriate sensors and
placement
3. Place occupancy sensors
+ Use cheat sheet to select appropriate sensors and
placement
+ Eliminate power pack where applicable (WSX wall
mount sensor – line voltage)
+ Specify occupancy or vacancy control
+ Match sensors to lighting zones with labels
3. Use cheat sheet, specify occupancy or vacancy
3. Match sensors to lighting zones
3. Place occupancy sensors
+ Use cheat sheet to select appropriate sensors and
placement
+ Eliminate power pack where applicable (WSX wall

+ Specify occupancy or vacancy control
+ Match sensors to lighting zones with labels
+ No occ sensor – add time control
3. Add time control
3. Add time control - nLight

3. Add time control - nLight
3. Add time control – Blue Box
4. Place photocells
+ Best practice is to locate sensor in middle of daylight
zone
+ Specify on/off or harvesting
+ If location allows, ceiling and wall mount sensors can
be ordered with integral photocell
+ No more than one photocell per lighting zone
4. Daylight zone dimensions
4. Daylight zone lines
4. Daylight zone
4. Place photocell
4. Relabel lighting zones
4. Relabel sensors
5. Places switches/wallpods
+ Dimming or on/off
+ Single- or multi-pole
+ Occupancy or vacancy
+ Line voltage, low voltage, or networked
+ Match switches to lighting zones with labels or wires
5. Place switches/wallpods
