In BAJA SAE INDIA 2017 Competition, we are required to follow norms according to prescribed rulebook

for the design and manufacturing of all-terrain vehicle. During the process I was part of Sales and
Marketing team as well as part of Steering Design and manufacturing department. During the Vendor
search process for vehicle parts a vendor offered us a lucrative offer for Pipe procurement but was
reluctant to get the material tested for metallic composition which was a criterion for pipe selection .He
offered us a solution to this by offering to tweak the metallic composition test results as per our
requirement. The offer was tempting as the Pipe he was offering is acceptable but sample test results
for metallic composition was against the rules. We carried a Design analysis of the pipe and found it as
acceptable but the BAJA SAE INDIA rules did not allow us to take the composition as found on the
sample test.

We did not take the deal and approached another vendor who offered the correct composition pipe but
at a higher rate. Since the deal is still the best so far in terms of quality and safety we chalked out a
buying plan where we reduced the total procurement amount by applying the waste reduction
mechanism during pipe cutting and successfully procured the quality pipe.
