Course Essential Question:

How does chemistry relate to our lives?

Class Goals: Assessments

By the end of this course you will be able to…

Describe and predict characteristics of an element and

compounds
Predict and describe the reaction path and amounts of a
given reaction
Identify and differentiate between different types of
reactions
Communicate arguments supported with evidence
Determine and communicate relevant information from
scientific literature

Extra Credit:
Extra credit can be offered if you come ask for it.
Extra credit can be in the form of problem sets or a small literature
assignment.
Any extra credit will add up to 5 points per assignment to an exam
grade.
Unit List:

1.    Scientific Method

2.    Properties and States of Matter
3.    Atomic Structure and Periodic Table
4.    Bonding and Molecular Structure
5.    Reactions and Stoichiometry
6.    Solutions
7.    Acids and Bases
8.    Behavior of Gases
9.    Thermochemistry

Lab Safety:

During labs everyone must:

Wear goggles
Wear long pants and closed-toed shoes
Not wear tank tops or sleeveless shirts
Hair must be tied back in a bun or braid

Class Policies:
Class rules will be discussed as a group at the beginning of

approved and agreed upon by students and teacher.

30 minute rule:
For non-lab lessons, direct instruction will only take 30
minutes maximum. The remaining time in the class period is
used to work through problems individually or with a partner,
ask questions about any content to teacher or classmates, or
complete problem sets/lab write ups.

Phones/Electronics:
During instruction it would be appreciated if all electronics be put away and on
silent in bags, unless specifically indicated they will be needed for the lesson.
You may use electronics for lab write-ups, literature assignments, calculators,
and music .

About the Class:
This class can be challenging in different aspects. It is my goal to work
with students and their individual needs to ensure they not only
understand the material but can also apply it in a problem solving setting.
