4 PSM+ User Guide

GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.

1. INTRODUCTION
(Note: This User Guide is also available through the PSM+ online interface via the “Help > Manual”
command.)
PSM+ (Power System Management Plus) is a software product for communicating with power and control
devices. This software enables you to monitor UPS and other devices over various line topologies, and
provides graceful shutdowns to computers.
PSM+ monitors local and remote devices, such as UPS systems, ac-to-dc rectifier systems, and
multifunctional environment monitoring units, using any of several public and proprietary protocols.
Local and remote computer shutdowns are available for various operating systems and their variants. For
some of them, like UNIX and Linux, you may need to manually edit remote shutdown settings. Bulk
VMware shutdown of guests and hosts is also supported, with and without VSphere.
The software includes user management and security features that allow maintenance of the system to be
performed by multiple users, each with their own rights profile. This is especially important for control
centers, where many remote devices are being monitored for events by support engineers, while certain
actions must be performed by administrative staff only.
Another important feature is the logging capability. Each logged event is optionally accompanied by a full
system snapshot that includes all device measurements saved at the moment the event was reported. The
logs can be exported in a form of CSV spreadsheet document, or in a user friendly HTML format.
Event notifications over email can be enabled. Organizational or cloud email servers can be configured.
Notifications can be filtered by their severity.

PSM+ User Guide 5

GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.

2. SOFTWARE COMPATIBILITY
PSM+ runs on Microsoft Windows systems and requires at least .NET 4.0 framework. This includes all
desktop Microsoft Windows versions from XP onward, and all Microsoft Server versions from 2003 onward.
The software does not introduce special requirements, hardware or software, to the computer or the server
it runs on, except for the case of remote VMware shutdown requirements, for which the VMware PowerCLI
5.0 or newer must be installed.
An Internet connection is required when installing or exporting licenses.

3. CONNECTIVITY OPTIONS
Remote and local systems monitoring is available over either SNMP (Simple Network Management
Protocol) or RS232/USB serial communication.
• If you use the SNMP connection method, verify that the supported remote device (UPS, dc power
system, etc.) has a network communication board or an external communication device, and that it
is accessible over Ethernet to the local computer on which PSM+ is installed.
• In case of RS232 or USB connection, verify that your computer has an unused RS232 port, USB
port, or USB-to-Serial adaptor, and that it has the appropriate serial or USB cable. Several devices
can be connected to one computer in this way, as long as there are enough RS232 or USB ports
available.

3.1 SNMP communication

SNMP communication in PSM+ supports the following features:
• SNMP polling is performed according to user defined delays for every remote device.
• Receiving SNMP traps is also supported.
• Both SNMPv2 and SNMPv3 communication variants are supported, including relevant security
mechanisms. It is essential to configure security options in such a way that they match the settings
of the remote device.

3.2 Serial cables

Two types of serial cables are available:
• Type 1 (part number GPIN03330) is a crossed 3-wire null-modem cable, DB9 to DB9; pins 2 and 3
crossed and pin 5 direct.
• Type 2 (part number GPIN03330A) is a simple 3-wire null-modem cable, DB9 to DB9; pins 2, 3,
and 5 are directly connected.
The cables are normally supplied with the network adaptors and/or with the UPS units. Both cables
mentioned above are 3 meters long. It is possible to extend the cables with a simple DB9 to DB9 pin to pin
cable. Extending the cable to more than 12 meters total length is not recommended.

4. INSTALLATION
4.1 Software components
The software consists of two parts – a service and a GUI (Graphical User Interface) application. The service
runs in the background when the computer starts, and performs all automatic actions including monitoring,
logging, notifications, and shutdown actions without the need for the user to log in.
After logging in to the computer, the PSM+ user interface can be accessed by clicking its icon in the system
tray. The interface lets you perform configurations and to monitor remote devices.

4.2 Installation process

To install PSM+ you must log in to the computer with administrative privileges.
The installation process is simple and straightforward. Just run the executable file and follow the
instructions. This installs (and automatically starts) the background service, and also the user interface
application. After the installation the user interface application should be started manually by locating it in the
list of installed programs. Next time you log in to the system it will start automatically.

4.3 First run

When you start PSM+ for the first time, the first thing you see is the splash screen. You can close it by
clicking the relevant button above its top right corner. Then the login prompt will appear:

Figure 1: Login screen

The default user name is "admin", the password is "admin" as well. You are encouraged to change the
password for the “admin” userID right away, under Settings → Users.
The "Remember" checkbox saves your last login user name and password. Best practice is to perform all
administrative operations as admin, and to create a new user with the role of "User" or "Technician" for non-
administrative purposes.

4.4 Splash screen

The splash screen appears every time PSM+ starts. This usually happens when a user logs in to the
system.
When no license is applied to the software, the splash screen remains visible until it is manually closed by
clicking a button above its top right corner. When a license is applied to PSM+, the splash screen
automatically closes after a few seconds.

GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.

5. USER INTERFACE
PSM+ has a clean and simple user interface. In the main window you can use the tree view on the left for
fast navigation between devices and locations, the varying view in the middle to see selected locations and
devices, and the event view at the bottom to see the events.

Figure 2: Typical screen layout

5.1 Tree view

The tree view shows units and locations. You can click on any of them to see their contents. When you click
on a device, its specific display is shown based on the device type. Several actions are available in the tree
view, through the menu, quick access buttons, and right-click context menu.

5.1.1 Root location

Initially only the root location exists, named "All devices". This location cannot be edited. The root location is
actually a special kind of region, and can contain regions and sites, but not devices. Devices from all sites
will be shown in the list or icon display, without showing sites and regions.

5.1.2 Regions
Basic containers in the tree are called regions, and can be created under the root location. Regions can
contain other regions and also sites; however they cannot contain devices. In icon view mode an image can
be shown as a background and child regions and sites can be scattered on top of it manually.
To add a region use Locations → New region. A dialog opens asking you for region name and a parent
node in the tree.

5.1.3 Sites
Sites are final containers for devices. They can be placed under the root location, since it is a container as
well, and also under regions or other sites. You cannot add a device in PSM+ without adding at least one
site first. Sites can contain devices and sites at the same time. Sites also can display their contents as icons
on an image of a map in icon view mode.
To add a site use Locations → New site. A dialog opens open asking you for site name and a parent
node in the tree.

PSM+ User Guide 9

GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.

5.1.4 Icon view and maps overlay

You can change the details view in the main window to an Icon view in View → Icon view. Doing so will
show the locations and the units as icons on the screen.
In this mode you can also add a map overlay to the background, and customize the view of each region and
site, including the root location "All devices". You can add a map of any size, in png, jpg or gif picture
formats, under Locations → Add map.

Figure 3: Icon view with map overlay

5.2 Devices
Devices can be added to PSM+ using the Devices → New device. A dialog opens with various device
settings, split by groups described below.

5.2.1 General
Here you are asked to enter the device display name, type, location, and description. The device name will
be shown under the device icon in the icon view mode, and in the list view. Location can be chosen from a
list of all existing sites. Device type should be selected from the list, whether this is a standard UPS, modular
UPS, dc rectifier system, or environment monitoring unit. The description is a text field that will only be
shown in the device settings dialog.
There are also two checkboxes in this group. "Save snapshot" indicates that full system snapshot should be
saved for every event (bigger log files). "Disable commands" will remove the "Commands" tab from the
device view, to prevent unwanted actions on the remote device.

5.2.2 Polling
The default polling setting is "Full", which means that each time PSM+ tries to access most types of devices,
it will request all available information, such as voltages, currents and so on. To reduce the amount of
network traffic, “polling type” can be set to "Alarms", and in this case only system events will be read at each
access. This works for both SNMP and serial communication, and can limit the ability to save a complete
system snapshot in the log in case the event status changes.
Setting “polling type” to "None" disables the polling mechanism. If the communication method is SNMP, and
the trap listener is enabled and the "Enable traps" checkbox in the SNMP section of the dialog is checked,
the device will still receive trap notifications for events, if these are set up on the device itself.

10 PSM+ User Guide

GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.

Communication type selection lets you choose whether the device is accessible over the network by SNMP
protocol, or through physical serial connection, usually a device located near the computer. Changing this
setting toggles the display between the "SNMP" and "Serial" screens in this dialog.
Polling period, timeout, and the amount of retransmits indicate how often the device will be polled for
information, and when the device will be treated as non-responsive. For less reliable networks you should
find the right balance of traffic and timeouts by altering these settings.

5.2.3 SNMP
If SNMP communication type was selected in the previous group, SNMP options will be shown in the device
dialog. The first thing to provide is the device address. It can be either an IP address or a DNS name;
however it is a common practice to work with IP addresses rather than names. You can also select the port,
which is usually 161 for SNMP communication.
Use the "Enable traps" checkbox if you wish to accept SNMP trap notifications from this device. Sending
SNMP traps is configurable on the remote device itself, usually as a part of configuration you perform to the
network adaptor or the UPS SNMP settings. Make sure the SNMP trap listener is enabled in Settings →
General.
At this stage you should go through security options, which begin with SNMP version selection.

5.2.3.1 SNMPV2
For SNMP version 2 the only available security is the read and the write community strings. Verify they
match the ones selected on the device. Pay attention to the fact that some communication devices have
both "public" and "private" community strings set to "read-only", so you won't be able to send commands
until you change the "private" community string on the device to "read/write" mode.

5.2.3.2 SNMPV3
There are three types of security settings in SNMPv3:
1. No authentication and no privacy
a. Authentication protocol "None"
b. Privacy protocol "None"

2. Authentication without privacy

a. Select the required authentication protocol
b. Privacy protocol "None"

3. Authentication and privacy

a. Select the required authentication protocol
b. Select the required privacy protocol

For any of these you should provide the security user name and a context name. Furthermore, you may
need to provide passwords for authentication and privacy based on the settings.

5.2.4 Serial
When selecting Serial communication type, the first thing to select is the communication port. This can be a
physical port on the computer, or a USB-to-Serial adaptor, or a direct USB cable to a UPS, which is actually
also a USB-to-Serial adaptor which is built in to the UPS and appears on your computer as a serial port. You
will be presented with a list of available serial ports in the "COM port" select box.
The rest of the settings depend on the device you are going to communicate with. Please see Table 1 on
page 7 for a list of compatible devices in order to select the necessary protocol and baud rate.
In most cases the data bits setting should remain at 8, stop bits at "One", and parity at "None". Do not
change these settings unless instructed to do so by the device manufacturer.

PSM+ User Guide 11

GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.

5.2.5 Connection status

After checking the settings, it is time to test the communication. You can do it without leaving the device
settings dialog by clicking on the "Test connection" button. You will be notified whether the communication
attempt was successful or not.

5.3 Event logging

The bottom part of the main window shows event logs. There are two tabs available there, "Active events"
and "Event log". In both tabs the following selection rule will apply:
• If you select a unit (same applies to the "Simple mode" view), you will see events for this specific
unit only.
• If a site or a region is selected, you will see the list of all events from all units under this specific
location. You will not see events from units located on other branches of the tree view.
• When the root location is selected ("All devices"), you will naturally see events from all existing
devices.
• You can click on the header row for each column in the list to sort the list according to your
preferences.

5.3.1 Active events view

Under this tab you will always see all active events depending on your selection in the tree view. These
events are the ones that are currently active on the selected devices.
Every event in this view can be confirmed by the user. In order to confirm the event, use Operations →
Confirm. You can also confirm an event by right-clicking it and selecting "Confirm" from the context menu.

5.3.2 Event log view

Just like in the Active events tab, the logic for showing events in Event log is that the list will only include
events from devices in selected locations. You should always select "All devices" root location in the tree
view if you want to view or export the entire event log.
It is not possible to confirm logged events.

12 PSM+ User Guide

GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.

5.3.3 Export event logs

The Event log and the Active events list can be exported by choosing Operations → Export log.
A new dialog appears, in which you can select the units whose events you want to see, select the saved log
format (HTML or CSV), and export the active events only or the entire event log.
• HTML format offers easy to read event log representation. It includes the snapshot for each event,
in case it was saved, and allows you to go through the events for troubleshooting.
• CSV format is more difficult for reading; however it is very useful for a spreadsheet view and for
automation; for example, building graphs and generating reports for failures using a spreadsheet
editor such as Microsoft Excel.
The resulting log is actually one HTML or CSV document, so it can be sent by email if necessary. It is
recommended to compress the file first, though.
A shortcut to exporting the logs exists in the context menu. Right-click the Event log or the Active events list
and select "Export to HTML" or "Export to CSV" to save the events currently listed in the view.

Figure 4: Exporting the event log

5.3.4 Additional information

Section 8.5 contains addition information about the event log.

PSM+ User Guide 13

GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.

5.4 Simple mode

The simple view mode changes the main window layout by removing the tree view. It is convenient for those
who only communicate with one device. The mode can be enabled by checking the View → Simple
mode. PSM+ automatically switches to the simple mode the first time it starts in case only one license for
device monitoring exists.

Figure 5: Simple mode

5.5 Pop-up window

When the user is logged in to the computer and the application is minimized, in case of new event a pop-up
window will appear. It holds the list of all new events from all units. The appearance of this window can be
configured under View → Show popups. Three options are available:
• Always, including when the application window is open on the screen
• When minimized, meaning that it will only appear when the main application is minimized to the
system tray
• Never
The same options are available in a list-box in the pop-up window itself.

GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.

6. DATA LOGGING
Data logging is designed to let you manually collect information about your devices and/or site conditions
and exceptional events. It saves the entire device data snapshot received in each polling cycle for selected
devices.
To enable data logging, select Data logging → Manage data logging sessions and click Add in
the dialog box that appears. In the "New data logging session" dialog select the unit and the time period for
logging. You can also select a time in the future; for instance, from tonight at 21:30 to tomorrow morning at
08:00. The data logging session starts and stops automatically.
System snapshots for the selected device are saved at the interval specified in its polling settings. In order to
see or edit the settings, click on the device and select Devices → Edit device, or use the context menu
option "Edit device" after right-clicking it.
You can export the entire data logged for each session by clicking the Export button. You can do this even if
this session is still in progress. The resulting file will be of the CSV format that lets you perform automated
actions, like building graphs for voltages and other logged values, in a spreadsheet editor of your choice.
All sessions will remain in PSM+ until you manually remove them using the Remove button.

Figure 6: Data logging

7. MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS
There are a few maintenance operations in PSM+. They are located under the Operations menu.

7.1 Save service/application system log

In some cases you may be requested to provide PSM+ logs for software issue investigation. Use these
options to save the log files somewhere, so they can later be transferred by email or other means. It is
recommended to compress the files before sending to reduce their size.

7.2 Save and restore configuration

“Operations > Save configuration”:
Saves the entire PSM+ configuration, including locations and devices.
Be aware that this does not save the license information, and in order to restore from a backup in future – for
instance if the software was removed or transferred to another computer – you must reinstall all licenses
before restoring the configuration.
“Operations > Restore configuration”:
Restores the PSM+ configuration.

PSM+ User Guide 15

GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.

8. SETTINGS
The Settings menu contains various operational settings for PSM+.

8.1 Users
This dialog lets you add, edit, and remove users from the system. Only Admin user can manipulate users.
There are three control levels:
• Admin – all tasks in the system
• Technician – all tasks except users and license management
• User – only monitoring actions, no access to locations, devices, users, licenses, and shutdown
management.
In order to switch to another user, select File → Logout.

8.2 Email
Use this dialog to configure the email server. This can be either a local server in the LAN, or a cloud-based
server. The settings in this dialog should be advised by the server maintenance personnel, or received from
the IT or cloud support team.

8.2.1 Setting up and troubleshooting Gmail access for PSM+

You can send emails to web email services. In case of Google's Gmail there is a specific setup procedure
that must be followed:
1. Access your Gmail account and enable access by “Less secure apps”. More information is provided
here: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en
2. Enable IMAP support in Gmail. See https://support.google.com/mail/troubleshooter/1668960?hl=en for

8.3 Recipients
In the recipients dialog you can add email notification targets. A recipient does not have to receive all
events; it is possible to filter both the devices and the event severities for email notifications.
Make sure to configure Email server settings before adding email recipients.

8.4 General
Under this dialog you can find some general options, like the option to enable the trap listener and select its
port. Trap listener is disabled by default; in order to use SNMP traps please enable it. You must make sure

that the port (which is 162 by default) is available on your computer, since other SNMP-enabled applications
can occupy the port for their own use.

8.5 Events
The events configuration allows fine-tuning event settings, by selecting the severity, sensitivity, and status
for each event and for each device type. First select the device type, and then go through the settings for
each event.
• Severity can be one of the three types: Information, Warning, and Critical. Changing this value will
affect event filtering while sending email notifications.
• Sensitivity indicates the amount of polling cycles before the event is accepted by PSM+. This means
that if you set up sensitivity for an event to 3, it will take three polling cycles with this event active in
the device before the event appears as active in PSM+.
• Status can be “Enabled”, “Ignored”, and “For log only”.
• Detailed information about device status is available for each event, through the “Show snapshot”
function. To view the snapshot, in the lower half of the screen, right click on the event line in which
you are interested (Figure 7). In the context menu that appears, choose “Show snapshot”. A pop-up
window appears with the snapshot data (Figure 8).

In the same context menu you can also choose to export the event details as an HTML or CSV file.

Figure 7: Right click on the event line, choose Figure 8: The snapshot data appears
“Show snapshot” in a popup window

8.6 Audio alarm

Selecting this option causes an audio alarm (a brief “ping”) to be generated for each new system alarm.
Deselecting this option silences the alarm. The default condition of the audio alarm is “off”.

9. LICENSING
PSM+ is provided free of charge with limited features. With the default license the software can
communicate with one device and shutdown the local computer.
PSM+ licensing control is available in Operations → License management. There are three types of
licenses:
• Devices for monitoring (one by default)
• Shutdown targets
• Shutdown virtual servers

Figure 9: License management

9.1 Adding licenses

Licenses can be purchased from your distributor. In order to receive a license for your computer or server,
you must provide the Computer ID (MAC address). You can click the "Copy to clipboard" button and then
paste the code in an email or other document.
A license comes in form of a key file, and will work only on the computer it was generated for by the use of
Computer ID. Choose "Install license" to add this license to PSM+. Please make sure the computer has
internet connectivity when installing a license, PSM+ will check its validity with the company servers.
After the license is installed, additional options will become available depending on license type. This can be
adding more devices for monitoring, configuring remote shutdowns, or configuring remote shutdowns for
VMware virtual servers.

9.2 Moving a PSM+ installation to another computer

An existing installation of PSM+ with licenses can be moved to another computer.
The process is as follows:
1. Perform a configuration backup to save the PSM+ parameters defined on the “old” computer.
(Operations > Save configuration)
The configuration backup should be saved to or copied to a place that will be accessible by the
“new” computer.
2. Export the license(s) from the “old” computer.
(Operations > License management > Export licenses)
The output of the export is a single file containing all of the licenses from the old installation.
(Be aware that after the licenses have been exported, the PSM installation on the old computer is
now without licenses.)
3. Install PSM+ on the “new” computer.
4. Send the exported license file along with the computer ID of the “new” computer to your distributor.
The computer ID can be seen at the top of the License Management screen
(Operations > License management). Inform your distributor that you are moving your PSM+
system from one computer to another, you need updated license keys, and you are attaching the
computer-ID of the new computer.
5. You will receive a replacement license file from your distributor.
Import the replacement license file into PSM+ on the “new” computer.
(Operations > License management > Import licenses)
6. Restore the configuration backup to PSM+ on the “new” computer.
(Operations > Restore configuration)
The new PSM+ installation is now ready for use.

10. COMPUTER SHUTDOWNS

PSM+ allows local and remote computer shutdowns. All shutdown related configuration is performed in the
Shutdowns menu.

10.1 Shutdown source

The shutdowns are based on events from UPS devices, and therefore the first step is to choose the device
that is responsible for computer shutdowns, even if you have more devices being monitored.

Figure 10: Defining a shutdown source

On the left there is a list of alarms available for the device, and on the right – the list of all monitored devices.
In case of a parallel UPS system, like in Figure 10, more than one UPS can be selected, and you can
choose whether it is enough to receive the event from one device only or the PSM+ should begin the
shutdown process only if the event occurs in all parallel units together.

10.2 Local shutdown settings

For the local shutdown settings, the first thing is to select what will happen to the local computer when it
must shutdown. Usually it should remain at default selection – shutdown. Then shutdown delays for all
events should be configured. Get advice regarding recommended shutdown times from the personnel
responsible for the UPS or from the UPS distributor.
You can choose to run a script or file before the actual shutdown. Specify the number of seconds before
shutdown that the script should start to run, and also whether to delay the shutdown until the script finishes.

Figure 11: Shutdown settings

20 PSM+ User Guide

GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.

10.3 Shutdown targets

This dialog will let you configure shutdown targets (computers or servers). Click Add to see the Shutdown
target dialog, put in the host name or IP address and select the shutdown type. There are three shutdown
types available:
• Agent shutdown requires the ShutdownAgent.NET application to be installed on the remote
Windows computer. Contact your distributor for the free agent software.
• RPC shutdown is for Windows computers, most probably in a domain. You must configure the RPC
credentials in Local shutdown settings before setting these up.
• SSH shutdown for any UNIX/Linux based machines, including custom devices.

10.3.1 Windows shutdowns

For Agent and RPC shutdowns it is enough to provide the shutdown delays for each event.
Agent shutdown configuration also lets you specify the port (make sure the same port is selected on the
shutdown agent side).
RPC shutdown has an option to force the close of applications running on a remote computer. This option
(enabled by default). RPC credentials should be set; remote shutdown will most probably not work with the
local account settings.

10.3.2 SSH shutdowns

SSH shutdown is achieved by logging in to remote computer, executing a command, and the logging off.
You must provide the user name and the password for a user account that can perform such an action.
Then you have two text boxes that specify the actions to be performed after the login. On event occurrence
usually a delayed shutdown command is issued. On event removal a shutdown cancellation command
should be sent.
Please make sure that the user you chose can actually login and run the required commands on the remote
machine. On many systems the root user cannot login over SSH directly, and this may require creating a
special user only for this purpose.
Another thing to verify is the command you send to initiate or cancel the shutdown. There are many different
systems with different syntaxes, even for the same old "shutdown" command. For instance, on some
computers it may require time in minutes and on others in seconds. There are both options in the SSH
shutdown dialog; please read the legend carefully.
If you need to execute several commands, it is better to write them in one line separated by semicolons.
This is a standard practice and ensures strictly sequential execution.

10.3.2.1 SSH SPECIAL CASES

Some Linux and Unix servers do not support Delayed Shutdown parameters when issued though the SSH
protocol. For these servers you must enable the Local Countdown option when configuring their shutdown.
This causes the PSM+ application to perform the countdown locally. When the countdown is complete,
PSM+ sends an Immediate Shutdown command to the remote server via SSH.

10.4 Shutdown virtual servers

This dialog is for VMware shutdowns. It will not be available until you have VMware PowerCLI tools installed
on this computer.
The shutdown mechanism is based on a PowerShell shutdown script. It connects to the specified server,
which can be either a vSphere server or an ESXi server, logs in to it using the provided credentials, and
sends shutdowns to all guests and then to all hosts.
Click Add to add one or more servers. Usually this would be enough. You can also configure the timeout
delay, which is 5 minutes by default. This is the timeout for all guests to shut down before the hosts start
shutting down.

GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.

There are more settings for advanced users that can be altered.
When adding or editing a server, there's a Test button in the dialog. After filling in the server and user
details, you can click on it in order to perform shutdown test. This will open a new window with a text
console. Click the Start button to start the test. In this mode no shutdowns will be performed, however
you will see the connection process, and all the guests and hosts names. You can also verify that there are
no errors in the process.

11. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

11.1 General

Q. How can I report an issue if I find a program bug or if a transaction

terminates abnormally?
A. Please send the following information to your distributor or directly to Gamatronic support:
1) A screenshot and textual explanation of the issue and the actions leading up to it, and
2) Zip the entire "C:\ProgramData\PSM" folder and send the zipfile along with your report.

11.2 Installation

Q. Do I need administator privileges to install the software?

A. Yes. PSM+ is always installed as a service. Actually, the software consists of two parts: a system
service and a GUI client. The service starts up together with the system, so there's no need to login
and open the GUI application to activate it.

During the PSM+ install the service is installed and starts automatically, while the GUI application may
require manual startup for the first time. If you choose to exit from the application, the system service
remains active, as do the monitoring, email notification, logging and shutdown functions. You will loose
GUI popup notifications, though.

Q. What are the installation prerequisites?

A. PSM+ requires Microsoft .NET framework 4.0 and higher. If you intend to use VMware bulk shutdowns,
VMware PowerCLI version 5.5 or later is also required.

11.3 Backup

Q. How do I backup my settings?

A. Use the "Operations -> Save configuration" function and save the resulting .dat file in a safe
place; you can restore it later from the "Operations" menu.

11.4 Logging

Q. How can I see the information that is saved in the logfile?

A. By default a snapshot is saved for each event on each device. This option can be unchecked in the
"Edit device" dialog.

In order to view the snapshot, which includes all device data at the moment of the event, right-click the
event in the log (or enter the "Operations" menu when the event is selected) and choose "Show
snapshot". You can also see the snapshot for each event when you export the log to HTML in the
"Operations" menu.

PSM+ User Guide 23

GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.

Q. What is "Data logging" and how does it work?

A. When you create a data logging session, the data from every device polling (as defined in the "Edit
device" dialog) will be saved and can be later exported to a CSV format. This can be useful when
performing site testing, or in order to see, for example, how input voltage varies during night hours.
You choose what gets saved, and after exporting the data you can use tools like Microsoft Excel to
create graphs or anything you may need.

Q. Why is the date/time for each line accurate only up to minutes in resulting
CSV data and event logs?
A. The date includes seconds, however Excel's automatic formatting hides seconds. To change this,
select the entire column and under "Format Cells" change the custom "dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm" to
"dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm:ss" (just add the ":ss"), and the seconds will also be displayed.

11.5 Interface

Q. Where is the event log? I can't find it in the menus.

A. The event log is shown right on the main screen at all times, at the bottom part. It includes the "Active
events" tab, which shows all events that are currently active, and the "Event log" tab, that shows
historical events (including currently active events).

Q. Why does the event log view change all the time?
A. The log (both existing and active) is being automatically filtered by selection of regions, sites, and units
in the tree and in the main view. You will only see events from all units under current tree branch. You
can see the entire log for all available devices by clicking on the "All devices" tree root view. You can
click on row headers to have the events sorted as you see fit.

Q. What are the "Locations -> Add map" and "Locations -> Remove map"
options? I don't see any difference when I specify an image.
A. You need to switch to icon view first in "View -> Icon view". In this mode you can select a region
or a site (in the tree view) and add a map to it. This will change the background of the icon view and let
you see your sites and units on a map. Pay attention - the maps are shown full size, so you might need
to change their size in advance to fit your screen.

11.6 Security

Q. What's the login username/password?

A. The default login is admin/admin.

Q. How can I secure my PSM+ system?

A. It is recommended that you change the administrator’s username and password immediately after the
first login. To improve system security and stability even further, it is highly recommended to add users
with relevant roles and use those user-IDs instead of the admin account. This will prevent accidential
changes to system settings and units configurations. Also, avoid checking the "Remember" option in
the login window unless the user type is defined as a simple "User" that can't alter critical system
24 PSM+ User Guide

settings.

Q. I am required to provide passwords in order to configure shutdowns. How

do I know they are safe?
A. All passwords, including PSM+ user passwords, are encrypted with industry level technology and are
stored securely.

11.7 Licensing

Q. What can I do with the free version of PSM+?

A. The free PSM+ software enables you to monitor your supported device, either remotely (over SNMP)
or locally (over a serial connection). You can add the device and have it monitored, including event and
data logging. You can have email notifications, pop-ups and so on. Local computer shutdown is also
available. So, to summarize, what you get free of charge is a stand-alone installation. If you want to
monitor additional remote or local devices, or if you need remote shutdowns, you will need licenses.
Contact your distributor or Gamatronic support for more details.

Q. What types of licenses are available?

A. By default (after a fresh PSM+ install) you can add one supported device to be monitored. You can
obtain licenses for additional devices to be monitored. In general, these are UPS and DC power
systems, and also some control and management devices. The other type of licenses are for
remote shutdowns. By default you can define only one local computer shutdown. Adding shutdown
licenses will enable adding remote computer shutdowns.
There are two types of remote computer shutdowns. The usual (per computer) license will let you add
remote computer shutdowns over RPC, Shutdown Agent, and SSH. The other type of license is for
VMware virtual servers bulk shutdown. This license is purchased once and allows limitless bulk
shutdown of all virtual servers, even if you have multiple VMware hosts.

Q. Are the licenses time-based? Can they expire?

A. No. The licenses are unique to your computer hardware and can't be transfered to another computer
as is, but they are not time-limited.

Q. How do I obtain licenses?

A. Contact your distributor or Gamatronic support and let them know what type of licenses you need, and
how many of them: monitoring licenses, regular shutdown licenses, or VMware bulk shutdown
licenses. You must also provide the Computer ID (available in the License management dialogue in
PSM+). This computer ID is unique and computer specific, so please consider which computer you will
use as a permanent PSM+ master. Of course, you can always transfer your PSM+ system to a
different computer if desired (see section 9.2).

Q. What if my PSM+ is installed on a virtual server? What happens with the

Computer ID if I transfer it to another host?
A. The unique Computer ID is created based on the CPU-ID and the motherboard ID. For virtual
machines these numbers are created and managed by the virtual machine, and should not change
when moved to other hosts. Nevertheless, you must take care to move the virtual machine rather than
copying it, since when you make a copy this will most probably create a new set of unique system

PSM+ User Guide 25

GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.

numbers and will lead to license expiration. Check with your virtual machine support person for more
details.

Q. What if I need to transfer my PSM+ installation to another computer?

A. Before you remove the PSM+ installation from the source computer, you need to export the licenses.
They will all reside in a single license file that must be sent to your distributor or to Gamatronic support
together with the computer-ID of the target computer. In return you will receive an updated license file
that can be imported into your target computer. This procedure is described in detail in section 9.2.
In case your source computer failed and it is not possible to recover the license, please contact your
distributor or Gamatronic support.

Q. If I need to upgrade my PSM+ system, will the license survive the update?
A. Yes, the licenses are kept separately from program files. You can even remove the installation
completely by using the windows uninstall feature and then reinstall it, the licenses will be reloaded
automatically.

11.8 Device monitoring

Q. What is the minimal configuration required to add a device for monitoring?

A. When adding a device for monitoring, you need to verify some basic things, like how the device is
connected (over Ethernet, or serially with a cable) to the computer, and what is the relevant protocol.
For ethernet connected devices it will most probably be a Standard UPS Protocol over SNMPv2, and
for locally connected devices Megatec at 2400 bps (8 bits, no parity, 1 stop bit). For more advanced
usage, see Chapter 3 “Connectivity options” in this document and review the manufacturer’s
documentation for the device in question.

Q. Why doesn't my UPS accept commands (shutdown, battery test)?

A. There can be any of a number of causes for this.
Some network SNMP adaptors or UPS controllers allow masking of remote commands for security
reasons, you will have to enable the features in accordance with their manuals.
There may be a mistake in the spelling of your "write" SNMP community name (in case you are using
SNMPv2). Verify that the write SNMP community string matches the one on your device.
Not every device supports all commands, even if they exist in the communication protocol. You can
verify this with device's manufacturer (this can apply to the SNMP adapter as well).

Q. How do I connect to an SNMP adaptor with I/O?

A. Some SNMP communication boards (for example, the G4 and G5 Control and Management products)
support control and management features outside of UPS communication protocol. These can include
digital and analogue inputs and outputs, and direct temperature and humidity measurements.
When you define such a device (e.g., G4 or G5) to be monitored in PSM+, you can also define a UPS
or dc power system that is connected over a serial line to the C&M device. This UPS or dc power
system device will appear in the PSM+ tree as a child device of the C&M monitored device. It will act
the same as a standard UPS device.
In such a case, you can click on the G&M device to see its readings, or on the UPS or dc power
system to see its readings.

GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.

11.9 Remote shutdowns

Q. How do remote shutdowns work?

A. PSM+ offers wide range of remote computer shutdown solutions. While the PSM+ software itself must
be installed on a Windows computer, you can set it up to send shutdown signals to a different type of
OS. These shutdown signals are sent the moment a power failure begins, and every computer counts
down its own time until shutdown. If the input power returns, a cancellation signal is sent.

Q. What are the ways to remotely shutdown a Windows computer?

A. Remote Windows machines can be easily shut down using the RPC protocol. No special definitions
are required in PSM+, and there’s no need to install special software on the remote machine (as long
as the computers are within the same domain). In case RPC protocol can't be used, there's a UDP
method that will work for any Windows machine as well; however it requires the installation of a small
piece of software called Shutdown Agent on the remote PC.

Q. How do I shutdown remote Linux/UNIX/MacOSX computers?

A. Remote UNIX, Linux, and any other SSH-enabled computers and devices can be shut down using the
SSH protocol. In the event of power failure in the UPS, PSM+ logs-on to the remote computer using
the supplied credentials and executes the shutdown command directly or via a script (your choice).
Each type of system can have its own setup for shutdown, with its own shutdown command.
If the utility power returns before the computers have shutdown, a cancellation command is sent in the
similar way. For instance, for 5 minutes delayed shutdown under Ubuntu Linux one can use "shutdown
-P 5", and to cancel the shutdown "shutdown -c". On MacOSX the command would look like "shutdown
-u 5", and the cancellation "pkill shutdown". The important thing is to make sure the credentials you
provide for login have the right to execute these commands.

Q. What if my remote Unix or Linux server doesn’t support delayed shutdown?

A. See section 10.3.2.1 “SSH special cases”.

Q. How do I shut down virtual servers?

A. The shutdown methods described above work for both physical and virtual servers. You can use RPC,
agent, and SSH shutdowns as usual with virtual servers of any kind. In case you are interested in bulk
shutdown for VMware virtual servers, you can use the virtual server shutdown feature of PSM+. It will
shutdown all virtual servers and their hosts without the need to set up shutdown for each computer.
You just have to specify the VCenter server and credentials, or specific ESXi servers.

Q. In PSM+, in the section for VMware virtual servers shutdowns, there's a Test
button. What does it do?
A. You can press this button after completing the settings to verify that the virtual servers shutdown
process has been specified correctly. Initially it will open a new log window. After pressing start you will
see the shutdown process of the script. The script is written in such a way that it does everything as
usual except for actually shutting down the servers, however you shall see all the virtual and physical
server names. Look into the script if you want to see how it works; you can do this right in the VMware
shutdown options dialog.

PSM+ User Guide 27

GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.

Q. Can I run something special on the remote machine before the shutdown?
A. Yes. On Windows computers, use the Shutdown Agent method and install the agent on the remote
machine. In the agent configuration, add a script to be executed before shutdown or cancellation. On
all machines that support SSH, you can add machine specific script execution right in the shutdown
settings in PSM+.

Q. I have a parallel UPS system. How do I set up PSM+ to ensure correct

shutdown operation?
A. When selecting shutdown source (in the Shutdowns menu), mark all your parallel units. Then verify
correct selection: whether to send shutdown signals to remote computers when all units send the same
status, or if having input failure signal on one of the parallel units is enough for you to launch the
shutdown process. The rest works as usual.

(End)
