History Students Respond Challenge of Disruption Era Through Discussion

UNAIR NEWS – Entering the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0, the industrial sector now
emphasizes computer automation in its framework. The job demand on the old model (manual
working) will shift to high-tech work system which is full of mastery of special skills and
advanced science.

This led to the existence of binary opposition between graduates of social humanity program
(soshum) with graduates of science and technology (science and technology) in the context of
job hunting after college where inequality always happens. The social humanities program was
not very popular with students compared to the science program.

As a response, Faculty of Humanities Universitas Airlangga History Student Association

(HMD) held a panel discussion, Umur Pendek Humaniora (Humanity Programs Short Life,
ed) on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 in FIB front yard.

Raising the topic on LPDP scholarships quota which was reduced at the end of 2017, the person
in charge of the event, Rafif Alim Rizqullah, said that there was involvement of bureaucratic
and industrial interests which finally reconstructed the social humanity education itself.

Meanwhile, one of the speakers, Dian Handayani said that social humanity science that is close
to public policy is often perceived as having no scientific autonomy. So often, social humanity
products only become means of political legitimacy so that a regulation looks scientific.

The former head of History Student Association, Toni Prasetyo, said that as students who learn
social humanity science, do not just stick to the formal sector.

According to Toni, social humanity students must be able to be flexible following the current
developments, not only prioritizing academics, but must be aware that technology develops
rapidly.

The discussion activity is a monthly work program of History Student Association. It is held
with different topic each month. This month’s topic was in line with the commemoration of
World Intellectual Property Day.

 HMD Ilmu Sejarah Respon Tantangan Prodi Soshum Era Disrupsi dengan Diskusi

UNAIR NEWS – Memasuki era Revolusi Industri 4.0, sektor industri kini lebih
menekankan otomasi komputer dalam kerangka kerjanya. Kebutuhan lapangan pekerjaan
model lama (manual working) akan tergeser oleh sistem kerja berteknologi tinggi yang sarat
akan penguasaan keterampilan khusus dan bekal ilmu sains tinggi.
Hal ini menyebabkan adanya oposisi biner antara lulusan program sosial humaniora (soshum)
dengan lulusan sains dan teknologi (saintek) dalam konteks berburu kerja selepas kuliah yang
selalu terjadi ketimpangan. Program studi soshum pun tidak ramai diminati oleh mahasiswa
dibanding dengan program studi saintek.

Menyikapi hal tersebut, Himpunan Mahasiswa Departemen (HMD) Ilmu Sejarah Fakultas
Ilmu Budaya (FIB) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) menggelar diskusi panel bertajuk Umur
Pendek Humaniora pada Rabu (24/4/2019) di halaman FIB UNAIR.
Mengangkat kasus pemangkasan kuota program studi soshum oleh LPDP pada akhir 2017
lalu, penanggung jawab acara, Rafif Alim Rizqullah, menuturkan bahwa dari kasus tersebut
terlihat adanya percampuran antara kepentingan birokrasi dan industri yang akhirnya
merekonstruksi intensi dari pendidikan soshum itu sendiri.

Sementara itu, salah satu pemateri diskusi, Dian Handayani menuturkan bahwa ilmu soshum
yang dekat dengan kebijakan publik sering dirasa tidak memiliki otonomi keilmuan.
Sehingga seringkali, produk-produk soshum hanya menjadi alat legitimasi politis agar suatu
regulasi terlihat ilmiah.

Menjadi salah satu pemateri diskusi pula, mantan ketua HMD Ilmu Sejarah, Toni Prasetyo,
menuturkan bahwa sebagai mahasiswa yang menekuni ilmu soshum, jangan hanya terpaku
pada sektor formal belaka.

Menurut Toni, mahasiswa soshum harus bisa fleksibel mengikuti arus perkembangan zaman.
Tidak hanya mengedepankan akademik saja, namun juga harus selalu sadar bahwa semakin
hari, teknologi berkembang semakin pesat.

Perlu diketahui, kegiatan diskusi tersebut merupakan program kerja HMD Ilmu Sejarah yang
rutin diadakan setiap bulan dengan mengusung tema yang berbeda-beda. Tema yang diusung
pada bulan ini merupakan bentuk peringatan terhadap hari Kekayaan Intelektual Dunia.
