B. LESSON PROPER

Okay class our topic this afternoon is about Taiko


drum Festival of Japan. What do you call the
professional taiko drumming troupe?
Sir, it is Kodo.
They are based in Sado Island, Japan and they
had a big role in popularizing taiko drumming both in
Japan and abroad. They regularly tour Japan, Europe
and the United States.
Okay, the name kodo conveys two meaning,
what are these?
Heartbeat
Children of the drum
So, heartbeat is the primary source of all rhythm
and read in a different way and it reflect of Kodo’s
desire to play their drums simply with the heart of a
child.
The main focus of the performance includes
the following. First is the Uchite, what is it?
Uchite is the taiko drummer.
What is the other traditional Japanese musical
instrument?
Fue and shamisen
Correct. And these make an appearance on the
stage. And also, the traditional dance and vocal
performance are part of the performance.
What are the traditional rhythms of regional
Japan?
It composed for Kodo by contemporary songwriters,
and pieces written by Kodo members themselves.
Very good. There performances normally last
for about one hour and forty minutes.
In terms history, what signifies the drums used
in village?
Sir, the peasant events such as the rice harvests or
dance festivals were celebrated with drums.
Yes, and especially the drums were used to
pray for rain and other religious ceremonies. And the
drums lead warriors into battles in order to scare off
the enemy.
In terms of their costumes, what are these?
Happi
Hachimaki
Tabi
Odaiko
Jozuke
Chime
Yes, it is correct. What is Happi?
It is white headband.
And what is Tabi?
It is a shoes with big toe separated.
How about Odaiko?
A big drum.
And what is Jozuke?
A medium drum.
And, last is chime, what is it?
A small drum.

Sir, Kodo is a professional taiko drumming troupe.
Musical pieces are based on traditional rhythm of
regional Japan. Uchite, the Taiko drummer, can
wear loose fitting (short coat), with an obi. Peasant
events such as the rice harvests or dance festivals
were celebrated with drums.
