About Us

 Aqseptence Group GmbH, Division Water Intake Systems – centrally based in

Karlsruhe, Germany – is a world-renowned mechanical engineering company
specialized in the development and production of water intake systems. These
include bar screening and trash raking machines as well as mesh/travelling band
screening machines, mainly made in Germany. More than 2000 highly sensitive
plants worldwide are equipped with our technologies.

 We supply design-build/made to measure automated screening machines for the

filtration of debris at the intake of seawater/river water for thermal power plants
(nuclear-, gas- and coal-fired power plants), desalination plants and industrial- and
potable water systems. The aim is to protect pumps and subsequent process steps
such as condenser tubes to avoid the carry-over of debris.

 Best technology available for fish protection on open-channel screening systems as

well as submerged offshore passive intake systems (the JOIS™ system) round off
our portfolio

Awards

Geiger® has received several awards and certificates

recognizing the high quality of products and safety
(for example State of Baden-Württemberg Resource
Efficiency and Bilfinger® HSEQ Award)

The Resource Efficiency award was granted for the

development of a long-life, high-quality cable-
operated bar screening machine. This machine is
manufactured in a highly resource-efficient way and
also saves resources thanks to its long-life and easy-
to-maintain demountable cable drums.

Protection of Intake Pumps and Downstream

Equipment

Efficient removal of debris from the incoming

water:
Trash removal capacity adjusted to the expected
quantity of debris
A. No Carry-over of trash to the clean water side
(typical problem of traditional Through-flow
screens)
B. Cleaning the rivers/lakes/sea
C. Optional : fish protection

Fine bar spacing/mesh opening to reduce

backwash/cleaning in downstream filtration
stages:
A. Bar spacing of modern bar screens can be
reduced down to 1-2mm
B. Mesh opening of travelling band screens can
be reduced down to 0.20-0.25mm

Advantages of Geiger® Revolving Chain Screen

 Best protection against large quantities of

debris (shortest cleaning intervals)
 High cleaning performance thanks to the
minimized gap between the bars and rake
teeth
 Sprocket segments are made of polyamide
(smoother-running, less noise, less
corrosion. Segments can easily be
exchanged and no grease is required)
 Precise chain movement due to reliable
guiding on either side
Optional:
 Special buckets, e.g. for dealing with jelly
fish (see image on the left) and large
quantities of algae
 Best cleaning performance with Vee-Wire

Advantages of the Geiger MultiDisc®

Travelling Water Screens

 Zero carryover to the clean water side (protection of

condensers, pumps etc.)
 Lower head losses (only one straight pass)
 Reduction of overall channel length (shorter intake
structure)
 No need for additional concrete walls for flow
deflection (needed for traditional dual-flow screens) –
installation in free-channel
 Considerable reduction of installation time and costs
(up to 80%) thanks to being largely pre-assembled
 Particular reduction of retrofitting time into channel
(approx. 1-2 days)
 Mesh size / perforation 200 µm – 10 mm
 Lower maintenance costs (only one chain / sprocket)
 No moving parts submerged in water
 Easy installation and self-supporting frame

Geiger MultiDisc® for Greenfield Installations

Our ground-breaking Geiger MultiDisc® Screen

technology stands for:

 Less scaffolding/faster and less costly installation

 No change of flow direction/shorter channels
 Reduced distance between the Geiger MultiDisc®
screen and the pump
 Space and CAPEX-saving for the intake channel
package
 No back walls and less erection and supervisor’s time
 Less operating costs during defects/liability period and
for the end customer
 Less outage risk/time and spare parts
 Little and simplistic maintenance and high durability
 One centrally-guided chain instead of two lateral
chains
 Zero carry-over
 No hair or algae-pinning effect
 Less pump cavitation risk due to less turbulences

This can help to save millions during a plant’s lifetime.

Geiger ® High Capacity Drum Screens - Overview

 High-capacity ‘in-to-out’ drum screens A-

framed and frameless made by Geiger ®
 Static and dynamic forces act vertically (no
buoyancy)
 Hydraulic loads are vertical and absorbed by
civil structure
 Drum screens are typically installed with
double-entry in cooling water intake systems
downstream from trash rakes or coarse bar
screens (see image on the right). Geiger ®
drum screens remove debris before the
circulating water is distributed to plant
components.
 Capacities of large drum screens are often up
to 140,000 m³/h, and regardless of the design
capacity wear rates are insignificant.
 Drum screens require very little maintenance
compared to conventional travelling water
screens.

Geiger ® High-Capacity Drum Screens: Technical Data

 Suitable for any intake where large quantities of screened water are required for
cooling or downstream processes
 Construction materials are selected to suit the conditions and can range from
carbon steel (suitably coated) through to 316L and Duplex/Super Duplex

Desalination: A Global Opportunity

It is estimated that approx. 30% of the

world's irrigated areas suffer from salinity
problems and remediation is seen to be
very costly.

 In 2002 there were approx. 12,500

desalination plants around the world in
120 countries. They produce some 14
million cubic meters/day of freshwater…

 The most important users of desalinated

water are in the Middle East, (mainly
Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab
Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain), which
uses about 70% of worldwide capacity;
and in North Africa (mainly Libya and
Algeria), which uses about 6% of
worldwide capacity.

Desalination: Cost Comparison

“Among industrialized countries, the USA is one of

the most important users of desalinated water,
especially in California and parts of Florida. The
cost of desalination has kept desalination from
being used more often. The graphic on the left
shows how amendments to California’s extensive
desalination regulations have threatened to bump
up the costs of desalination just as the state looks to
the sea to address its rampant drought.”
