IS 16700: 2017, have brought relief to Indian structural engineers to some extent -

as some of the prevalent analysis and design methodology was borrowed from ACI
and similar International codes, so we have an Indian equivalent to look upto.
While IS 16700 is more prescriptive in nature and supersedes related clauses in
other codes, there are some interpretational issues which may lead to
misperception when compared to an existing code e.g. IS 1893:2016. It would be
great if forum members including the members of the IS 16700 code committee
enlighten us with the intent and clarify the practicing engineers to have a common
interpretation of the clauses. There would be many areas which needs to be
discussed and addressed I am just highlighting a few here.

The following could be a general interpretation of some of the clauses and the
checks as required by the code. The intent is to put forth an acceptable
methodology related to Structural analysis models, P-Delta parameters, Drift
checks to be performed, torsion criteria checks etc.

A. Structural analysis:
As per section 7 of the IS 16700, cracked section properties are to be considered in
the analysis, which would result in 2 or more separate analysis models
1. SLS Model: Using cracked section properties as per Un-Factored loads (Table
6).
2. ULS Model: Using cracked section properties as per factored loads (Table 6).
The base shear obtained from Response spectra method to be scaled to match the
Vb obtained from seismic coefficient method.
3. ULS Model Unscaled: Although the codes may not explicitly require it, but
could be more of a interpretational derivation for drift check see section for Drift.
This model to have cracked section properties as defined for factored loads &
Unscaled Response spectra with scaling factor of (I x g)/(2x R) i.e. the Base shear
obtained from Response spectra method is not scaled to match the Base shear Vb
calculated as per seismic coefficient method.
B. P-Delta factors:
As per cl.7.2, P-Delta effects shall be considered however the code does not
elaborate on the P-Delta factors that needs to be considered, please comment if the
following parameters would be generally acceptable from the existing load
combination we have as per IS codes corresponding to the intent of the model and
the checks to be carried out thereof.

1. SLS model – (sustained effects)

Dead – 1.0 factor
Live – 1.0 factor

2. ULS model –
Dead – 1.5 factor
Live – 1.5 factor

C. Drift Criteria: As per cl. 5.4.1, Lateral drift are required to checked for
earthquake as well as wind loads.

1. Lateral Drift due to Wind loads: The lateral drifts to be checked as per the
following interpretation

Analysis Model: To be checked using the SLS model as defined above (point A.1)
P-Delta: parameters as per point B.1
Load combinations: Un-Factored
Drift Limit (hi/400) = 0.002 for each story of multi-story building
Max. building displacement = H/500, where H is the total height of the building

2. Lateral Drift due to Earthquake load: The lateral drifts to be checked as per
the following interpretation

Analysis Model: To be checked using the ULS unscaled model as defined above
(point A.3) (The base shear obtained from response spectrum shall not be scaled to
match the base shear due to seismic coefficient method)
P-Delta: parameters as per point B.2
Load combinations: Factored
Drift Limit (hi/250) = 0.004 for each story of multi-story building

D. Torsion criteria: As per cl. 5.5 Natural modes of torsion.

Analysis Model: To be checked using the SLS model as defined above (point A.1)
P-Delta: parameters as per point B.1
