He has kept only a part of his extra profits for himself. The rest has gone to his employees and customers by means of higher wages and lower prices. Most businesses are dwarfed, They are no larger today than they were some years ago. And most of the owners are content to jog along with dwarfed business. And any small men who do not lear. from the big men will continue to have a dwarfed business. In the spring time almost every family begins to think of its garden, We are a garden-minded people. Some of us have very small ones. Some who live in metropolitan fashion, in hotels or boarding houses or flats have mio gardens at all. But they wish they had. By the study of plants, Darwin found the six great laws of nature: growth, reproduction, inheritance, variability, struggle for survival and survival of the fittest. He wrote his controversial book, The Origin of Species, and made these laws known to the world. Then after him came other thinkers who showed that these laws could be applied to human fife and to trade and industry. I once saw a rat a foot long bhinder into a column. In seconds it was wriggling in agony, covered in a thick black mantle of ants. Soon ants were moving back to their nest carrying tiny chunks of bloody flesh. Five hours later only the rat’s bones remained. People grogay witlf sleeping sickness have been known to collapse near ants? nests: only skeletons are found next day. Ants’ nests line African rivers. On the surface of the ground, only a small indentation is visible, but below is a network of passageways that may extend as deep as ten feet. The Queen keeps court in the deepest and most secret recess of the labyrinth. More ferocious than any human king or queen, she resigns alone; after killing all other active fémales in the group. The males who come to fertilize her eggs are killed by her moments later: Queens rarely make public appearances. They travel only at night, always escorted and even carried by the strongest and fastest ants. ‘The ants I was watching had occupied their nest for about three weeks, and were about to move. It-was seven in the evening, The equatorial night descended abruptly, and the forest became still and quiet. Suddenly a nervous swarm of ants burst from the nest, and swiftly shaped themselves into a column about one and a half inches wide and moving at approximately ten feet a minute. ‘The soldier ants formed the flanks; the workers were in the middle. Millions of ants had already passed when, within the column, a white stream took shape. This stream was made up of the tiny larvae ~ newly born ants — being carried out of the nest by the workers. It was a sign that the ants felt secure. If | was lucky the Queen would soon follow. i 2 BE. / B.Tech. Write four instructions to your brother for maintaining his newly bought bicycle: (4x%=2) PART - B (5 x 16 = 80 marks) 11. i) Read the passage and answer the following questions: Earthquakes are the most lethal of all natural disasters. What causes them? Geologists explain them in terms of a theory known as plate tectonics. Continents are floating apart from each other; this is referred to as the continental drift. About sixty miles below the surface of the sea, there is a semi molten bed of rock over which plates, or slabs, carry continents and sea floors at a rate of several inches a year. As the plates separate from each other, a new sea floor is formed by the ‘molten matter that was formerly beneath. Volcanic islands and large mountain ranges are created by this type of movement, ‘The collision of plates causes geological instability such as that in California called the San Andreas Fault, located between the Pacific and North American plates. ‘The plates there are constantly pushing and pulling adjacent plates, thereby creating constant tremors and potential for earthquakes in the area. Geologists would like to be able to predict earthquakes accurately. Using laser beams, seismographs, gravity-measuring devices, and radio telescopes, they are presently studying the San Andreas Fault to determine the rate strain and the amount of ground slippage. Calculations indicate that sometime in the future, California will be struck by a major earthquake. In spite of the geologists’ theory of plate tectonics, there are still gaps in man's understanding and knowledge of the causes of earthquakes. Powerful earthquakes have occurred in places where plate boundaries are hundreds of miles away. In the 1800s New Madrid, Missouri, and Charleston, South Carolina, were shaken by carthquakes that no one had foreseen. Certain areas of the world are quake prone. Italy, Yugoslavia, and Algeria have experienced ‘many quakes. In November 1980, Naples was struck by an especially devastating quake. China and Japan have also been hit by horrendous quakes. In 1923, Tokyo and Yokohama were reduced to rubble by gigantic tremors that were followed by fires, tornadoes, and finally a thirty- four-foot tsunami, or tidal wave, which was caused by the earth’s drop into the waters of Tokyo Bay. What effects have geologists’ predictions of earthquakes had? The Chinese in Haicheng in 1974 were warmed that'an carthquake might occur within the next year or two. With the help of amateur seismologists’ observations of animal behavior and the rise and fall of water in wells and measurements of quantities of radioactive gas in water, professional geologists were able, in January 1975, to predict an earthquake within the next six months. On February 4, Haicheng was destroyed, but because its residents had been evacuated, very few people were killed. In California, where earthquake is an ever-present menace, building codes now require quakeproof structures, and Civil Defense units have intensified their training in how to deal with disaster should it strike or, perhaps more accurately, when it strikes. Choose either one of the passages and answer the following questions: a) Social classes It is hard to get any agreement on the precise meaning of the term ‘social class’. In everyday life, people tend to have a different approach to those they consider their equals from that which they assume with people they consider higher or lower than themselves in the social scale. The criteria we use to ‘place’ a new acquaintance, however, are a complex mixture of factors. Dress, way of speaking, area of residence in a given city or province, education and manners all play a part. In ancient civilizations, the Sumerian, for example, which flourished in the lower Euphrates valley from 2000 to 5000 B.C. social differences were based on birth, stafus or rank, rather than on wealth. Four main classes were recognized. These were the rulers, the priestly administrators, the freemen (such as craftsmen, merchants or farmers) and the slaves. In Greece, after the sixth-century B.C., there was a growing conflict between the peasants and the landed aristocrats (land-owning noblemen), and a gradual decrease in the power of the aristocracy when a kind of ‘middle class’ of traders and skilled workers grew up. The population of Athens, for example, was divided into three main classes which were politically and legally distinct. About one-third of the total were slaves, who did not count politically at all, a fact often forgotten by those who praise Athens as the nursery of democracy. The next main group consisted of resident foreigners, the ‘metics’, who were freemen, though they too were allowed no share in political life. The third group was the powerful body of ‘citizens’, who were themselves divided into sub-classes. In ancient Rome, too, a similar struggle between the plebs, or working people, and the landed families was a recurrent feature of social life The medieval feudal system, which flourished in Europe from the ninth to the thirteenth centuries, gave rise to a comparatively simple system based on birth. Under the king there were two main classes — lords and ‘vassals’, the latter with many subdivisions. The vassal owed the lord fidelity, obedience and aid, especially in the form of military service. The lord in return owed his vassal protection and an assured livelihood. In the Iater Middle Ages, however, the development of a money economy and the growth of cities and trade led to the rise of another class, the ‘burghers’ or city merchants and mayors. These were the predecessors of the modem middle classes. Gradually high office and occupation assumed importance in determining social position, as it became more and more possible for a person born to one station in life to move to another. This change affected the towns more than the country ateas, where remtants of feudalism lasted much longer. With the break-up of the feudal economy, the increasing division of labour, and the growing power of the town burghers, the commercial and professional middle class became more and more important in Europe, and the older privileged class, the landed aristocracy, began to lose some of its power. Answer the following questions in not more than three sentences: (5x2=10) 1) What are the criteria that we apply to decide the status of a person in society? 2) What were the three main groups of people in Athens? 3) What was the duty of ‘vassals’ in the medieval feudal system? 4) Mention the four main classes in the Sumerian civilization? 5) What happened after the collapse of feudal system? 6) Write a short summary of the given passage in not more than 80 words. (6 marks) (On) b) How lions hunt Male lions are rather reticent about expending their energy in hunting ~ more than three- quarters of kills are made by lionesses. Setting off at dusk on a hunt, the lionesses are in front, tensely scanning ahead, the cubs lag playfully behind, and the males bring up the rear, walking slowly, their massive heads nodding with each step as if they were bored with the whole matter. But slothfulness may have survival value. With lionesses busy hunting, the males function as guards for the cubs, protecting them particularly from hyenas. Hunting lionesses have learnt to take advantage of their environment, Darkness provides them with cover, and at dusk they often wait near animals they want to kill until their outlines blend into the surroundings. Small prey like gazelle, does not give any problems to the lions. ‘They are simply grabbed with the paws, or slapped down and finished off with a bite in the neck. A different technique is use with large animals, such as wildebeest. Usually a lioness pulls her prey down after running up behind it, and then seizes it by the throat, strangling it. Or she may place her mouth over the muzzle of a downed animal, and suffocate it. Lions practice remarkably sophisticated cooperative hunting techniques. Sighting prey, Tionesses usually fan out and stalk closer until one is within striking distance. The startled herd may scatter or bolt to one side right into a hidden lioness, Sometimes lionesses surround their quarry. While perhaps three crouch and wait, a fourth may backtrack and then circle far around and approach from the opposite side, a technique not unknown in human warfare. No obvious signals pass between the lions, other than that they watch one another. A tactic may also be adapted to a particular situation. One pride of lions often pursued prey at the end of a narrow strip of land between two streams. Several lionesses would sit and wait until gazelle wandered into this natural dead-end. Then they would spread out and advance quite in he open, having learnt that the gazelle would not try fo escape by running into the bush beside the river, but would run back the way they had come. A lioness has no trouble pulling down an animal of twice her weight. But a buffalo, which may scale a ton, presents problems. One lioness and a young bull battled for an hour and a half, the buffalo whirling around to face the cat with lowered horns whenever she came close. Finally she gave up and allowed him to walk away. But on another occasion, five males came across an old bull. He stood in a swamp, belly-deep in mud and water, safely facing his tormentors on the shore, Suddenly, inexplicably, he plodded towards them, intent it seemed on committing suicide. One lion grabbed his rump, another placed his paws on the bull's back and bit into the flesh. Slowly, without trying to defend himself, the buffalo sank to his knees and, with one lion holding his throat and another his muzzle, died of suffocation. Answer the following questions in not more than three sentences: (§x2=10) 1) What do you mean by ‘cooperative hunting technique"? 2) What happened to an old bull? 3) What is the duty of male lions when lionesses go for hunting animals? 4) How do lionesses kill large animals? 5) How do they hunt small animals? 6) Write a short summary of the given passage in not more than 80 words, (6 marks) 13. a) Most of the city buses are overcrowded during peak hours. PART —B (5 x 16 = 80 marks) 11. Read the passage and answer the following questions: Real policemen, both in Britain and the United States, hardly recognise any resemblance between their lives and what they see on ‘TV- if they ever get home in time. There are similarities, of course, but the cops don’t think much of them. The first difference is that a policeman’s real life revolves round the law. Most of his training is in criminal law. He has to know exactly what actions are crimes and what evidence can be used to prove them in court, He has to know nearly as much law as a professional lawyer, and what is more, he has to apply it on his feet, in the dark and rain, running down an alley after someone he wants to talk to. Little of his time is spent in chatting to scantily-clad ladies or in dramatic confrontation with desperate criminals. He will spend most of his working life typing millions of words on thousands of forms about hundreds of sad, unimportant people who are guilty ~ or not ~ of stupid, petty crimes. Most television crime drama is about finding the criminal: as soon as he’s arrested, the story is over. In real life, finding criminals is seldom much of a problem. Except in very serious 2 cases like murders and terrorist attacks ~ where failure to produce results reflects on the standing of the police — little effort is spent on searching. The police have elaborate machinery which eventually shows up most wanted men, Having made an arrest, a detective really starts to work. He has to prove his case in court and to do that he often has to gather a lot of different evidence. Much of this has to be given by people who don't want to get involved in a court case, So, as well as being overworked, a detective has to be out at all hours of the day and night interviewing his witnesses and persuading them, usually against their own best interests, to help him. A third big difference between the drama detective and the real one is the unpleasant moral twilight in which the real one lives. Detectives are subject to two opposing pressures: first, as members of a police force they always have to behave with absolute legality; secondly, as expensive public servants they have to get results, They can hardly ever do both. Some of them have to break the rules in small ways. If the detective has to deceive the world, the world often deceives him, Hardly anyone he meets tells him the truth. And this separation the detective feels between himself and the rest of he world is deepened by the simple-mindedness ~ as he sees it — of citizens, social workers, doctors, law-makers, and judges, who, instead of stamping our crime punish the criminals less * severely in the hope that his will make them reform. The result, detectives feel, is that nine- tenths of their work is re-catching people who should have stayed behind bars. This makes them rather cynical. i) Write the response which best reflects the meaning of the text: (6 x 1 = 6) 1. Itis essential for a policeman to be trained in criminal law ‘A. So that he can catch criminals in the streets. B. Because many of the criminals he has to catch are dangerous. C. So that he can justify his arrests in court. D. Because he has to know nearly as much about law as a professional lawyer. 2. The everyday life of a policeman or detective is A. Exciting and glamorous. B. Full of danger C. Devoted mostly to routine matters. D. Wasted on unimportant matters. 3. When murders and terrorist attacks occur, the police ‘A. Prefer to wait for the criminal to give himself away. B. Spend a lot of effort on trying to track down their man. C. Try to make quick arrest in order to keep up their reputation. D. Usually fail to produce results, 4, The real detective lives in ‘an unpleasant moral twilight’ because ‘A. Heis an expensive public servant. B. He must always behave with absolute legality. C. He is obliged to break the law in order to preserve it. D. He feels himself to be cut off from the rest of the world. 5, Detectives are rather cynical because A Nine-tenths of their work involves arresting people B, Hardly anyone tells them the truth C. Society does not punish criminals severely enough D. Too many criminals escape from jail 6. The aim of the author is to highlight the A. Similarities between the drama detective and the real one B. Differences between the drama detective and the real one C. Deficiencies in the police department D. Bad temperament of the real police men ii) State whether the following statements are true or false: (10 x 1 = 10) 1) Policemen feel that the image of their lives shown on TV is not accurate. 2) A policeman does not need any special training in law. 3) Policemen and detectives spend a great deal of time at the typewriter. 4) Television crime plays tend to concentrate on the search for the criminal, 5) In real life, finding criminals is one the policeman’s greatest problems. 6) The detective’s work is over once the arrest has been made. 7) People are usually willing to give evidence. 8) Detectives are hot permitted to break the lav. 9) Most detectives fee! that ctiminals are punished too severely. 10) Much of the detective’s work involves arresting former criminals. 12, a) Power cut is a major problem in your town. Power failures become a nuisance to the school students preparing for the public examination and the cottage industry owners also suffer a lot, Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper highlighting the problems faced by people because of frequent power failures. In your letter, give some solutions to solve this problem. (6) (on) b) Imagine that your friend is obsessed with video games and he shows no interest in his studies, His parents are very much worried about his habit of playing video games all the time, Write a letter to your friend explaining the harmful effects of video games. (16) 13, a) The earth contains a large number of metals that are useful to man. One of the most important of these is iron. The iron ore, which we find in the earth, is not pure. It contains some impurities which we must remove by smelting. The process of smelting consists of heating the ore ina blast furnace with coke and limestone and reducing it to metal. Blasts of hot air enter the furnace from the bottom and provide the oxygen which is necessary for the reduction of the ore. The ore becomes molten, and its oxides combine with carbon from the coke. The non-metallic constituents of the ore combine with limestone to foim a liquid slag. This floats on top of the molten iron, and passes out of the furnace through a tap. The metal which remains is pig iron. 6) (Or) ') The technological road from oil field to finished plastic product has numerous fascinating side trips. Here’s the route taken in the petroleum-to-plastics process. Crude oil is first drilled and transported to a refinery. It is then refined into ethane, propane, hundreds of other petrochemical products and petrol. Subsequently, ethane and propane are “cracked” into ethylene and propylene, using high-temperature furnaces. After that catalyst is combined with ethylene or propylene in a reactor, resulting in “fluff”, a powdered material (polymer) resembling laundry detergent which is combined with additives in a continuous blender. This polymer is then fed into an extruder where it is melted. The melted plastic is cooled and then fed into a pelletizer that cuts the product into small pellets. These pellets are shipped to manufactures who manufacture plastic products. (16) 14. a) Write a set of eight recommendations to improve quality of education in schools.
