Chapter 5 Notes

 The Puritans moved to America to start their own colony.


o The colony they started was called the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
o The main reason for starting the colony was so they could practice
their own religious beliefs.
 There were many conflicts that arose when people moved to America.
o Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson caused conflict because they
disagreed with the colony’s leaders.
 The leaders did not tolerate disagreement and forces
Hutchinson and Williams to leave the colony.
o There were many conflicts with the Native Americans when the
settlers began to take their land.
o Disagreements about the land caused a war that was called King
Phillip’s war.
 Trade played a large role in the life of the new settlers.
o They started a business called an industry that focused on trade.
o Trade was only allowed between England and other English
Colonies.
o They sent out good as exports to other countries.
o They brought in goods as imports when they needed goods they
didn’t have.
o They called the main trade route the triangular trade routes.
 The middle colonies included Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, New
Jersey, and Delaware.
o The middle colonies had a form of self-government that was
documented in The Frame of Government in Pennsylvania.
o The middle colonies had a religions movement in the 1720s called
The Great Awakening.
 The Great Awakening “awakened” or renewed the people’s
interest in religion.
o Philadelphia was the biggest city in the middle colonies.
 Philadelphia had a great location for trade because it was
built on a river.
o Many of the settlers in the middle colonies came from different
backgrounds which caused diversity.
o There were many artisans, or skilled workers in the middle
colonies.
 Apprentices would train with a master to become an artisan.
 The southern colonies are made up by Maryland, Virginia, North
Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
o Carolina was later split into two colonies, North and South
Carolina.
o Georgia was the last colony to be founded.
o Many enslaved workers were brought to America to work on the
plantations in the southern colonies.
 Unlike the northern colonies that began to oppose slavery
and the middle colonies that let African Americans work
freely, the southern colonies depended on enslaved workers
to work on the plantations.
o Settlers would leave the southern colonies to settle in the
backcountry.
o The Native American trail, the Great Wagon Road, let settlers
through the mountains to the piedmont.
 The Calverts were a were a wealthy English family.
o They Calverts practiced the Catholic religion.
o The Calverts settled in a colony that became known as Maryland.
o Maryland was set up as a refuge for Catholics.
 Important Colonies:
o Boston, Massachusetts
o Providence, Rhode Island
o Hartford, Connecticut
o Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
o Wilmington, Delaware
o New York City, New York
o Savannah, Georgia
o Charles Town, South Carolina
