1. Psychology is the study of mind and has two branches, experimental and applied
psychology. Cite a scenario or experience encountered that you used each with your
students (10 pts)

Psychology is the science of behavior and mind, including conscious and unconscious
phenomena, as well as thought. It is an academic discipline of immense scope and diverse
interests that, when taken together, seek an understanding of the emergent properties of brains,
and all the variety of epiphenomena they manifest. As a social science it aims to understand
individuals and groups by establishing general principles and researching specific cases.

1.1. Experimental Psychology

Experimental psychology refers to work done by those who apply experimental

methods to psychological study and the processes that underlie it. Experimental psychologists
employ human participants and animal subjects to study a great many topics, including (among
others) sensation and perception, memory , cognition, learning, motivation, emotion;
developmental processes, social psychology , and the neural substrates of all of these.
This experimental psychology use to explore and better understand mental and behavior
process.
For example, they use scientific research to provide insights that improve teaching
and learning, create safer workplaces and transportation systems, improve substance abuse
treatment programs and promote healthy child development.

1.2. Applied Psychology

Applied psychology is the use of psychological methods and findings of scientific

psychology to solve practical problems of human and animal behavior and experience. Mental
health, organizational psychology, business management, education, health, product
design, ergonomics, and law are just a few of the areas that have been influenced by the
application of psychological principles and findings. Some of the areas of applied psychology
include clinical psychology, counseling psychology, evolutionary psychology, industrial and
organizational psychology, legal psychology, neuropsychology, occupational health
psychology, human factors, forensic psychology, engineering psychology, school
psychology, sports psychology, traffic psychology, community psychology, medical
psychology.
A few years ago, I have encountered a problem with the student who had engaged in a
relationship with a wrong person at wrong place and time. When I had learnt about the given
situation, I made an observation, research and investigation. After quite some time, I have learnt
that the wrong relationships were existing. As a teacher, adviser and with the parents’ consent,
I had talk to the student.
I let the student opened-up without any reservation on why and how did it happen.
After knowing the whole story, I told him all the consequences of being in that relationships.
Moreover, I gave some pieces of advice about entering the relationships. About what God’s
words and plans for him, today and forever. I introduced to him the salvation and grace of God.
Nowadays, he is already serving God together with me as his mentor and shepherd.

2. Psychology has also influenced the modern principle of curriculum construction.

Elaborate on this (10 pts)

Curriculum comprises all the learning which is planned and guided by theschool,
whether it is carried on in groups or individually inside or outside of the school. - Kerr
According to some resources, curriculum in this 21st century focuses on a child-
centeredness, community-centeredness, balance/integration, need, utility, creativity,
preservation/conservation, variety, flexibility/elasticity, and of contemporary knowledge for
the benefits and advancement of a student and community. These make the 21st century
curriculum more advance and achievable.

3. Why is a knowledge of Psychology of Education essential for an educator? (5 pts)

Education and psychology are interdependent. Psychology had changed the spirit of
education and it gives new meaning to learning in classroom. Psychology also changed the
old concept of education where only upper class had the ability and right to learn.
In life, it is important that we are educated about various things especially the right and
the wrong. Education stems from psychology. Without psychology, education will be hard to
obtain and thus, life becomes harder. Psychology explains how people grow, how people
interact with one another, how each individual learns and acquire new sets of skills, among
others. Solving such problems lead to the education of any individual in that matter and that
individual learns to use what he has learned when the time comes in his life for him to use it.

4. Explain that education, life and psychology are interrelated (5 pts)

5. Psychology emphasizes the importance of freedom of the child in the maintenance of

discipline in the school. Describe how you will carry out such (10 pts).

Teachers are considered the second parent once in school. As a second parent we take
charge in the development of a child psychologically and mentally. In todays’ generation, a
child is more often than not engaged in the 21st technology like cell phone, tablet, and laptop.
These may interrupt the development of the child’s psychological capability. These may lead
them in a wrong pattern of life.
Teachers, as the secondary parents, must take their part in maintaining good rapport to
their students. With this, they may able be part in the development of their students mentally,
physically, and psychologically. This may lead them to have a better tomorrow.
6. Educational psychology discusses process of development of the students, process of
learning, social adjustment of the students, individuals’ differences in physical
abilities and mental traits and powers, interest and motivation of child and various
problems associated with the mental health of the students. With this, how would
you help your students’ learning with traumatic experience (10 pts)

This is based on my personal experience as a teacher here in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

We have a transferee pupils a year ago. This pupil is generally jolly, active, athletic, and bright.
When you look at him, you may not notice any traumatic experience he is carrying. His trauma
was brought out and learned when an unsolicited situation happened.
He doesn’t want to go to school anymore. He was shaking when he’s in his room. He
does not talk. He doesn’t participate. He does not do anything in class.
With this regard, as one of his subject teacher and tutor, I was able to have a one-on-
one talk with the parents about the situation. I advised them monitor their child every now and
then. Observe any action and reaction of him when in the house.
As his teacher and tutor, I talked to him heart-to-heart. I told him know the importance
of education. I told him how God loves him. And also, I encouraged him to do his best in any
aspects of life, to focus on his studies, to shut people in his performances.
His parents knew about what did I tell him. Right then and there, they entrust him unto
me when his in school. And day by day, he’s becoming to jolly, active, athletic, and bright once
again.
