The purpose of this memo is to place an emphasis on why it is so essential to not discuss
business or company information on your personal social media account.

One of the crucial guidelines to follow in order to keep a stable connection between your job and
a personal social media account is that one should not reveal unauthorized information regarding
the company on such platforms. Revealing details of a meeting or information discussed in a
meeting can put the company at risk because outside people can now have access to inside
information about the company. We don't know what can be done with this information and who
can have access to it in the future. Depending on the dept of information leaked, the entire ethics
of the company could be at risk. To add on, publishing materials about a project composed by
the company to a personal social media account before the information has been professionally
announced to the public can cause severe damage to the company’s business strategy plan. A
well-rounded company should have chronological steps in order to full-fill a certain mission-
weather it’s to inform the public of an issue or to advertise a specific idea the company has been
working on. This can threaten the entire company’s future plans. In order to avoid that, this
policy is essential to follow because not only can it affect an individual directly, but can it do
more damage to the entire company. Before taking any action on something regarding the
company you work for, one should think of everyone else involved- investors, co-workers, and
customers. If we keep everyone else in mind, this policy seems extremely necessary to follow.

The statement itself includes a persuasive reasoning behind this rule. Disclosing sensitive
material can be harmful to the company for various reasons depending on the situation. An
employee might not know which information to avoid in social media so he/she should practice
keeping work and personal life separate. There shouldn’t be a reason for one to discuss business
outside the company and the policy made it clear that the risk of doing so is higher than whatever
reason one might have to reveal such information. The tone of the policy is quite neutral with a
sense of urgency because it includes such crucial information. In the textbook Technical
Communication by Mike Markel, 11th edition, it was stated, “.. or suppose that on your personal
blog, you reveal that your company’s profits will dip in the next quarter. This information could
prompt investors to sell shares of your company’s stock, thereby hurting everyone who owns
shares…” In order words, revealing information regarding the company to outsiders can change
the outcomes completely and utterly because they have half information about something.
Having used this half-information, they have the ability to make things worse for the company.
Not following this rule can affect so many people and the company itself negatively and the
example provided proves exactly that. I, myself, agree with this policy and think it should be
implemented everywhere because it can avoid severe destruction of the company and will help
maintain the company how it is.
