Symbiosis International (Deemed) University

Abstract
India is currently witnessing astronomical growth in telecommunication
sector with enhanced usage of internet, smartphones and applications
for data service and entertainment. Mobile TV (m-TV) is a recent
addition promising continuous information and entertainment on the
move. This study attempts to comprehend various predictive factors
of behavioral intention of using m-TV. The research uses primary
data surveyed using a structured questionnaire administered upon
students studying in Universities co-located in Pune region. Data is
analyzed using Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology
2 (UTAUT2) to derive suitable relationships between the explored
factors. The results are synthesized and presented using a partial least
square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach. Results
indicate that perceived ease of use, facilitating conditions, hedonic
motivation, usage habits and societal influence, have significant
positive impacts the behavioral intention while perceived expectancy
of performance and valuation of service pose insignificant effect
over behavioral intention. However, moderating effects of gender
was observed only concerning the relationship that exists between
behavioral intentions to use along with facilitating conditions
m-TV. The study has far reaching implications on researchers and
practitioners for use of m-TV. The study will help vendors offering
m-TV services on smart phones to strategize their product for a wider
audience reach, and marketing managers to project their price-product
mix appropriately to Indian customers.

Acropolis Faculty of Management and Research, Indore
Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore

Abstract
The study examines how services are advertised in India via a Content
Analysis of service advertisements from two prominent magazines
of India. Specifically the study examines which service advertising
strategies are predominantly utilized in India; how service advertising
strategies vary across the type of services as well as investigates the
role of the culture in the choice of service advertising strategies in
the country. Chi square analysis demonstrates that service advertising
strategies do indeed significantly vary by service types considered in
the study: Utilitarian and Experiential studies. Cultural aspects also
seem to influence choice of service advertising in India. The study
would aid service providers and advertising agencies in the choice of
advertising strategies for services in a fast emerging economy: India.

The Marketer’s Turing test: Use of Chatbots
in Relationship Marketing
Aditya Kovvali
Symbiosis Centre for Management and Human
Resource Development, Pune
Symbiosis International (Deemed) University

Abstract
In the digital age, customers expect organisations to be available
for 24/7 while marketers are trying to get engage customers to
interact with the brand. With only 0.06% being the clickthrough rate,
Adblocking growing by 41% and almost 54% not trusting banner
ads, marketers are moving from capturing eyeballs to capturing the
hearts of the customer. On way is through chat bots. Chat bots are
computer programs that use A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) to simulate
human conversation. On example is Wall Street Journal’s bot which
sent news reports based on topics the user has specified. This study
will use extensive literature review to arrive at the factors influencing
use of chatbots in relationship marketing using ISM and MICMAC
analysis. This study concludes with the factors which most impact the
relationship marketing aspect of using a chatbot.

A Study of the Relationship between
Corporate Responsibility, Corporate
Branding and Corporate Reputation using
Interpretive Structural Modelling
Archana Singh, Nehajoan Panackal
Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies, Pune
Symbiosis International (Deemed) University

Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to understand the relationship
between corporate responsibility, corporate branding and corporate
reputation and their antecedents. In the study the researchers have
tried to interpret the relationship among variables which is missing in
extant literature.
Design - Variables have been identified by extensive literature review,
interpretative structural modelling (ISM) and MICMAC analysis has
been used as a tool to understand the linkages and relation among
variables from the literature review.
Findings - The findings using ISM modeling indicate three levels.
MICMAC analysis has further divided these variables into four
clusters. The output suggests that Corporate social responsibility is a
key factor as it has the highest driving power. Brand performance and
brand awareness are dependent factors, Corporate image and customer
attitude are the linkage factors.
Research limitations/implications - The model is developed based
on expert opinion. The model can be further validated and analyzed
using statistical techniques such as structural equation modelling.
Originality/value - Many researchers have focused on corporate social
responsibility and branding, to the researchers knowledge, there has
been no model developed using ISM based on expert opinion linking
corporate responsibility, corporate reputation and corporate branding.
The model will provide a useful insight to marketers, corporates,
academicians on the linkages and relation between the different
variables identified in the study.

Framing as a Micro-Foundation to the
Resilience-Agility Capability: Setting the
Cognitive-Affective Stage for Dynamic
Potential
Bart De Keyser, Koen Vandenbempt,
Alain Guiette
University of Antwerp

Abstract
As the business environment becomes progressively dynamic, the
constructs of resilience and agility are increasingly advanced as
primordial organizational capabilities. However, while extant literature
has picked up significantly in terms of the macro-level exploration
of resilience and agility, surprisingly little research appears to have
been conducted on the constructs’ micro-foundational basis: all
abstractionism aside, what processes contribute to the constitution
of organizational resilience and agility in the firm’s daily bearings?
By introducing the construct of framing to the resilience-agility
conversation, this paper addresses this literature gap from a social
constructivist perspective. Based on the findings of an explorative
reflexive case study at a B2B-company, this paper outlines the
cognitive and affective impact of four different approaches towards
the framing of organizational reality, i.e. adrift, fortified, homeless,
and colonization. Case findings reveal that, while the potential of
fortified and homeless framing approaches to constitute dynamic
capabilities fades over time, the framing approach of colonization
exhibits an organizational setting that picks up in dynamic potential
as time progresses.

Impact of Customer Satisfaction on Retail
Brand Loyalty: Does Fairness Matter?
Biranchi Narayan Swar, Rajesh Panda
Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Bangalore
Symbiosis International (Deemed) University

Abstract
Brand loyalty and customer satisfaction have been extensively studied
in marketing. Literature suggests that customer satisfaction has a
significant and positive influence on brand loyalty. Loyalty influences
future purchase intention of consumers and drives their re-purchase
behavior. This paper analyzed customer satisfaction as a determinant
to retail brand loyalty in brick and mortar stores. Additionally, the
authors explored the role of fairness theory in retail brand loyalty
(does fairness matter?). In this study, a survey was conducted through
a questionnaire and the data was collected from 237 respondents from
India. The data was analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA)
and the hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling or
path analysis. The outcomes of the study indicated that, in addition
to customer satisfaction, distributive fairness and procedural fairness
have positive impact on retail brand loyalty in brick and mortar stores.
However, interactional fairness was not having any significant impact
on retail brand loyalty.

Employee Perspective of Factors Influencing
Patient Safety in Tertiary Care
Hospitals of Agartala
Debarshi Mukherjee, Mahasweta Saha,
Soumen Mukherjee
Department of Business Management, Tripura University
Tripura University

Abstract
Healthcare industry in India is growing at a 16.4% CAGR and
estimated to be US$370 billion by 2022. The major stakeholders
include the agencies like hospitals, diagnostic centres and
pharmaceutical companies in one hand patients on the other. Unlike
other states Tripura being a border state sharing 85% boundaries with
neighbouring Bangladesh is plagued by various geographic challenges
having a spill over effect in the healthcare sector as well. In the
realm of consumer satisfaction hospitals treat patients as customers.
Broad definition of a customer liberates a patient from the clutches
of typical code of secrecy to be maintained by the hospital and rather
imposes much emphasis on safety issues. The issue well deserves to
get wide attention since a significant population in India meets fatal
end owing to acquired diseases picked during one’s stay due to the
absence proper infection control mechanisms. Safety of the customers
is of enormous importance in many industries like in aviation, food
& beverages, hospitality and healthcare segments. However, with the
growing competition among the organized healthcare sector patients
are clamouring for more and more attention towards safety concerns
and needless to mention that there is a price tag attached to it. The
paper investigates the culture of patient safety among the hospital staff
of the tertiary care hospitals in Agartala, the capital city of Tripura. This
causal study revealed that medical record & reporting system, Hospital
Management and Work Environment are the significant contributors
towards maintaining safety protocol in the hospital. Further, the
measures taken by the hospitals to maintain safety standards will also
have a bearing on ensuring patient satisfaction in the long run.

Collaborative Consumption: Scope and
Challenges from the Consumers’ Perspective
K. G. Sofi Dinesh, Rejikumar G
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham

Abstract
Collaborative Consumption (CC) is slowly and steadily becoming
part and parcel of our economy. Now it is not uncommon to see
people ordering food through Swiggy from the comfort of their home
or office and returning back home from office or traveling around in
an Uber or Ola. People are becoming aware of the benefits of CC and
they are also becoming active participants in CC Research is only a
decade old in this area although sharing and collaboration are nothing
new for humanity. This study attempts to give clarity to the concept
of collaborative consumption in the light of recent studies and look
at its different types as discussed in literature. It looks into the major
motivating factors and impediments from the consumers’ end to engage
in collaborative behavior. There are a lot of areas from the consumer
behavior lens that are open to research in future which include quality
and value perception in CC, consumer expectation from CC and its
influence on overall quality perceptions, role of information sharing
through social media about CC on shaping consumer behavior, etc.

Does Minimum Support Price Supporting
the Farmers: A Comparative Study in
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States
Kishore Kumar Yathamsetty
Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad
Symbiosis International (Deemed) University

Abstract
When the agricultural production is more, the price of the crops may
fall drastically. To avoid such situation and to provide remunerative
prices to the farmers for their crops which cover the expenses as well
as some profit to the farmers, MSP was introduced by the government.
The minimum support price is a guaranteed price provided by the
government for the crops produced by farmers. Even after MSP
farmer’s economic conditions have not improved and deteriorating
year by year as the number of farmers suicides are increasing. Many
people are distancing themselves from farming activity as they feel
it is non-profitable and non-remunerative, which is likely to have
drastic consequences on volume/Quantum of food production raising
doubts on whether the MSP supporting or suffering the farmers.
In this scenario, this paper attempts to know the opinions of farmers
in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh regions regarding various aspects
of Minimum Support Price. Three regions of erstwhile Andhra
Pradesh ;(Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema) were selected for
the study purpose.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to quantitatively assess the essential trends
of existing research on “puffery in advertising” through bibliometric
analysis. This study uses citation data collected through Scopus
and Google Scholar for the research area “puffery in advertising” to
investigate the most productive journals, top countries of affiliation
and prominent years with maximum citations. The study analyses the
87 articles related to “puffery in advertising”, published during 1840
to 2018. Moreover, this study also presents graphical analysis through
network maps. “Puffery in Advertising” has remained an under
researched area. However, records of past 10 years indicate marginal
growth in the number of publications. The United States dominates
this research area with most numbers of articles published till date.
Through clustering of subject areas, it is found that majority of articles
have been published under the subject area of ‘Business, Management
and Accounting’. Interestingly, the results of the network maps
slightly differ from that of citation table. This article is useful for any
reader or researcher who wants to understand the trends of “puffery
in advertising” in terms of citation analysis, authors and affiliation
countries; and prominent years with maximum citations. This is the
first ever bibliometric study on “puffery in advertising” providing bird
eye view of the essential trends.

SME Manager Profile & Company
Performance: An Exploratory Study
Maha Stelate, Fatima Zahra Alami,
Salah Koubaa
Hassan II University

Abstract
In a small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) context, the central
role is often attributed to a single individual who is the manager.
Indeed, researchers admit that the SME’s organizational specificity
lies largely in its personalized management style in which the manager
(or entrepreneur) is the main actor. He guides the company according
to his strategic intent based on his profile, values, and aspirations,
thus determining the company’s functioning and conditioning its
performance. In his perception of performance, the manager attributes
an importance to his goals and motivations, which merge with those of
the company. The novelty of this study consists in including a typology
of entrepreneurial profiles of managers that reveal their characteristics
as strategists and reflects their relative contribution to the company’s
performance. We opted in this empirical study for a qualitative
approach with a unique case study method illustrated by a Moroccan
SME located in Casablanca; which allowed us to explore two managers
within the same specific environment. The theoretical framework
and research methodology used for this exploratory purpose made it
possible to provide very revealing results regarding the relationship
between the manager’s profile and the SME’s performance, as they
are fully associated, which is in line with the literature.

Abstract
Rural markets have played a significant role in growth of the emerging
economies. In India, the economic growth in the last two decades
and governments’ focus on rural economy boosted consumption and
production levels in the rural India. Rural markets and consumers are
a lot more heterogeneous than their urban counterparts. Keeping the
fact that the rural market is not so rural and evolving significantly and
demographic variables are significantly affecting their buying behavior
in the mind the present study had five objectives to fulfill. With the
help of four hypotheses the study has fulfilled the objectives. The
primary data was collected with the help of structured questionnaires
and SPSS 20 software was used to analyses the data. The outcome
proves that there exist a significant association and correlation
between demographic variables and buying of consumer goods in
rural market. Various demographic variables has its own role to play,
ignorance of anyone could lead to the debacle in rural market, hence
to win the lion heart of rural consumers, marketers must consider the
demographic variable and its association, segment the market based
on it and then tries to position the products accordingly then possibly
they may succeed.

The Effect of Social Media Usage on
Internal and External Attributions of Small
and Medium Enterprises
Preetha Menon, Ramakrishnan Raman
Symbiosis Institute of Business Management Pune
Symbiosis International (Deemed) University

Abstract
How entrepreneurs attribute their control on the decision to use social
media tools for marketing purposes may result in their adoption/
rejection of social media. Based on the outcome of social media,
such attributions may have positive and negative effect on the its
continued use. This study uses attribution theory to explain the
attributions behind adoption of social media tools and techniques.
Further, using field experiments, this study advances attribution
theory by demonstrating the effects of usage of social media on
entrepreneur’s shift in the locus of control from external to internal
attributes. While the use of attribution theory is validated with this
study, the contribution of this study lies in the extension of the theory
leading to a new funnel based model to explain the use of attribution
theory. This study also contributes to our understanding of Social
media usage by SMEs. At times when SMEs must resort to effective
ways of communication, this study paves the way for better use of
these tools for effective communication.

Abstract
This research is a literature review of service quality concepts, models,
and their classification based on service quality measurement scales
and operationalization techniques. Services marketing literature is
reviewed from 1938 to 2018; important service quality concepts &
models are classified into major groups for better understanding of
service quality measurement scales and operationalization techniques.
The study identified five important developments in the service
quality literature as; disconfirmation theory, gaps model of service
quality, normative expectations-differential scale, ideal expectations-
differential scale, and performance-only scale. Subsequently based on
measurement scales and operationalization techniques the literature
is classified into six distinctive groups as; industry/ function specific
scales, multiple gaps scales, hierarchical scales, internal & external
scales, conceptual differentiation, and other approaches to service
quality. These six groups are recommended to be used for classifying
any research involving measurement and operationalization of service
quality. The study contributes to better understanding of service
quality conceptualization centered around measurement scales and
operationalization techniques.

Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Bengaluru

Abstract
The paper attempts to create an ‘Online Susceptibility Scale’ (OSS) by
considering the influencing factors affecting shoppers’ buying decision
in an online environment. The scale would support the understanding
of the influence of online information impacting consumer decisions.
These factors motivating consumer purchase behavior has not been
adequately addressed in the past w.r.t shopper influences. The sample
size for the study was 400 consumers from Bangalore city. The study
involved qualitative and quantitative studies to develop the scale. 11
items were identified for the scale development which were borrowed
from literature and modified through focus group discussions. The
data collected was tested for reliability and subjected to Exploratory
Factor Analysis (EFA). EFA resulted in identifying 3 factors namely
Evidential online influence (five items), Confirmational online
influence (three items) and Experiential online influence (three items).
Subsequently Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was conducted to
test and confirm the three factors. The CFA output provided evidence
for the validity estimates (convergent and discriminant validity) for
the measurement model along with model fit indices of the scale were
presented. The validation of the model confirmed the factor structure.
The study brings to light that electronic retailers should consider the
‘Online Susceptibility Scale’ (OSS) to provide acumen into the online
shopping influences and there-by manage their campaigns accordingly.
Results indicated that the three factors explaining online information
sources have significant impact during his purchase decision. The
paper would discuss the managerial implications of this new scale for
both theoretical and managerial contributions.

Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune

Abstract
Purpose - The basic purpose of the study is to investigate the relevance
of voters’ engagement in shaping voters’ intentions in India. In order to
ensure favorable voter turnout, political parties and government make
multiple efforts to engage voters. Findings of this study may act as
feedback mechanism in terms of shaping voters’ loyalty. The study is
an attempt to measure the voter engagement efforts by political parties
and government as ruling party in India.
Design/methodology/approach - The foundation of the present
research is laid on exhaustive review of available extant literature
by authors. Further, based on this review authors confirm a dearth
of studies which studies voters’ behavior with consumer centric
approach and measure the impact of voters’ engagement in India. The
government spend significant expenses on design and execution of
various health and sanitation campaigns. In order to spread awareness
among citizen, they also have to incur additional cost on advertising
of such campaigns. Keeping the purpose of the study in mind authors
employed survey technique against self-administered questionnaire.
Furthermore, to validate the questionnaire authors interviewed few
politicians. Looking at the intensity of efforts, it seems essential to
measure the effectiveness of voters’ engagement.
Findings - The stoutcome would propose the relevance of voters’
engagement activities of parties and government.
Practical Implications - The study findings will act as feedback
mechanism. They can be further used for design of effective activities
to engage voters especially from underdeveloped and less educated
segment in India. These recommendations would help professionals
(politicians) to understand the importance of such activities and also
help in designing appropriate content for turnouts of loyal voters. Book of Abstracts

Symbiosis International (Deemed) University

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to prioritize the factors that are considered
to be important when making the decision towards liking or loving a
particular brand, from the perspective of young consumers. The study
models the problem of identifying various factors influencing brand
love (BL) as a multiple-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem and
applies Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) as a tool to find the relative
weights of the factors. Then these weights are used to evaluate three
popular apparel brands amongst youngsters, namely ‘ZARA’, ‘Hennes
& Mauritz’ (H&M) and ‘Marks & Spencer’ (M&S). The data pertaining
to pairwise comparisons of various factors and sub-factors related to
the study are collected from the students studying at various colleges
in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) (India) using convenience
sampling. The results indicate that Brand Experience is the most important
factor amongst all twelve factors considered in the study followed by
Consistency, Brand Involvement, Competence and Price Worthiness.
With regard to the brands, H&M is identified to be the most preferred
brand amongst the youth for purchasing apparels which is followed by
ZARA and M&S. The present study has investigated selected brands
of apparel only in Delhi-NCR and has considered only the youth of
this region as respondents. Furthermore, the AHP methodology used
in the study has not considered the interrelationships among the factors
influencing BL, while calculating their relative weights. The results of
the study may help brand managers of many big brands, to evaluate
critical factors that influence the love or liking of consumers towards a
brand. This may help them in achieving cost-effective implementation
of marketing and advertising strategies by efficiently managing their
resources. Today’s youth will be the future consumer with more
purchasing power; thus it is important to understand them and their
preferences. Further, the present study is the first one to apply AHP for
prioritizing the influencing factors of BL, to the best of our knowledge. Book of Abstracts

Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal

Abstract
With the growing importance of sales promotion tools, it is vital to
develop more understanding of the sales promotion and their benefits.
However, existing works of literature provide evidence about sales
promotion’s impacts on consumer evaluation process through hedonic
and utilitarian benefits, though existing literature has fragmented
understandings and contradictory opinions and less theoretical
foundations. In response to these criticisms, this article systematically
investigates about hedonic and utilitarian benefits of sales promotion,
with an aim to find out what is known and what requires to be explored
further. The findings of this review provide information that a majority
of existing literature about hedonic and utilitarian benefits of sales
promotion have prioritized European and American geographical
location and sample. It is also observed that maximum studies are
conducted in the context of fast moving consumer goods. Exploration,
pleasure, enjoy are the most studied hedonic benefits while saving
and convenience is the most studied utilitarian benefits of sales
promotion. This study tries to develop a clear understanding about
sales promotion’s hedonic and utilitarian benefits. It helps to map the
landscape as well as provide future research direction by narrating
limitation of present literature.

School of Management Studies
Cochin University of Science and Technology

Abstract
Organizations’ success and growth has been the focal point of
management researchers, discounting the value of understanding
failures and the process of turnarounds. In this context, studies of
organizational turnaround gain preeminent significance. A state
owned enterprise in the state of Kerala which was once a competent
player in the electric cables and wires industry lost its foothold owing
to a flagship product becoming obsolete accompanied by a string
of other reasons. The competitive business environment in the state
makes it imperative for the company to make a revival and profitably
utilize the opportunities in the market. The study aims to assess the
turnaround strategies adopted by the company using field based
empirical case study method of research. Data is collected from three
sources to ensure triangulation and enhance validity and includes
in-depth interviews with selected personnel (top management team
and senior most employees), audited and published annual reports
(documentary evidence) and quantitative data through questionnaire
(to study collective perception about the extent of implementation of
strategies). Apposite analysis techniques viz qualitative data analysis,
financial performance analysis and quantitative techniques reveal that
a combination of Retrenchment, repositioning and reorganization
strategies adopted have aided the company to turnaround for two
years, the sustainability of which is dubious.

Abstract
Telecommunication technologies are evolving at a fast pace and the
technology lifecycle is getting shorter, forcing Telecommunication
Service Providers (TSPs) to adopt a cautious approach during new
technology launch. However, estimation of acceptance rate of a new
technology is difficult due to non-availability of past data. In this
paper, a Markov Chain model is proposed to forecast acceptance rate
of new telecommunication technologies (4G), supported by a survey.
The forecasted rate is compared against a re-survey conducted after
a time step of 3 months. The forecast is provided for a period of one
year. The proposed method of forecasting technology acceptance can
assist TSPs in understanding the demand for 3G & 4G technologies
and plan for network expansion in time to meet this demand.

Abstract
Industrial relations (IR) form the backbone of any economy and more
so for developing countries like India, which is trying to catch up
with other developing countries. The role of harmonious industrial
relations in the economic development of a country hardly needs any
emphasis. Because it’s the industry which lays the strong foundation
for the overall economic development of the country by facilitating
the growth of agriculture & service sectors.
Though the industrial relations scenario witnessed few gory incidents
in the past, winds of change seem to be blowing in the desired direction
and with both employers & employees coming to the conclusion that
need of the hour, from their and nations point of view, is to collaborate
rather than continuing with confrontationist approach.
This paper looks at the concept, importance of harmonious industrial
relations, its contemporary issues and how the paradigm shift (though
on a smaller scale) is taking place in the arena of industrial relations-
from confrontation to collaboration.

A Dialectic Reframing Organizational Change
Alain Guiette, Koen Vandenbempt
University of Antwerp

Abstract
This paper aims at reframing organizational change adopting a
dialectic lens in order to transcend polarized tensions between planned
and emergent approaches to change and to direct attention to the very
becoming of organizational change processes. Being concerned that
processual thinking, in its present theoretical discourse, does not fully
reflect the lifeworld of practitioners, and hence risks at falling prey of
ontological drift, we develop a scaffolding of a ‘processual perspective’
on the becoming of change that phenomenologically aligns with the
lived reality of practitioners, and that transcends dualistic thinking
of predominant variance, process, and practice theories by injecting
a dialectic perspective. Drawing on Heideggerian phenomenology
and a refinement of phenomenological qualities of sensemaking, this
paper argues that change ‘becomes’ through a dynamic equilibrium
(dialectic) of three ‘ideal types’ of epistemological conceptualizations
of change (wayfinding logic, managerialistic logic, and reflexive
logic) with three ‘ideal types’ of praxeological meaning construction
mechanisms (absorbed sensemaking, detached sensemaking, and
mindful sensemaking) respectively. The theoretical scaffolding
hints at three important factors in the becoming and sensemaking
of organizational change from a processual perspective: the role of
middle management in broadening the phenomenal sensemaking
repertoire, the crucial contribution of reflexivity during reweaving
and accommodation processes, and eventually the development of
competence in both epistemological and praxeological repertoires.

Abstract
Purpose - The objective of the present study is focused in the
development and validation of job performance scale. An empirical
framework was developed to measure teacher’s performance by
adopting four dimensions of measurement viz. Task-Performance,
Contextual-Performance, Counterproductive-Work behavior and
Adaptive-Performance.
Methodology - Self-designed questionnaire has been used for the
present study. Forty-one items were generated to measure the job
performance scale. A convenience sample of 423 principals was taken.
Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were used for
validation of job performance scale.
Findings - The outcomes of EFA indicated four factored structure
of job performance construct. The results of CFA confirmed job-
performance as a reliable and valid construct.
Research limitations/Implications - The present study provides
the theoretic development of a scale for the operationalization of job
performance among teachers. It will help the teachers and academic
policymaker’s to design, modify and organize the performance of
teachers which will upsurge the long-term performance of students
in academic. The performance of a teacher cannot be assessed only
from a single perspective i.e., principal or supervisor with a minimum
sample of government school principals only. Therefore, future
research should validate the performance of teachers with all the three
perspectives including principals, teachers and students considering
both private and public sectors.
Originality - The study developed and validated the job performance
construct with an updated scale developed procedure.

Abstract
The decision to demonetize the higher currency notes has targeted
major issues like eliminating corruption and black marketing.
However, it laid major implications on the health of bank employees.
Employees not even faced work overload but also suffered from
non-supportive crowd of people causing incivility at work place.
Thus, this study aims to analyze the effect of customer incivility on
the psychological health of bank employees through the intervening
role of job strain. Theoretically, this study is based on job strain
model which explains patterns of depression, exhaustion, and job
dissatisfaction of an employee at work. Confirmatory factor analysis
provided a good model fit. The hierarchical regression analysis was
used to examine the hypothesized constructs. The results indicated a
good fit for the hypothesized model. The result also showed positive
relationship between the customer incivility and psychological health
through the mediating role of job strain. This study adds value to the
ongoing research in the field of psychological health and wellbeing
of service sector employees. A psychologically healthy employee can
prove to be an important asset for the banking industry. The study
has major implications for banking authorities and suggests recruiting
more employees to complete the task. Adjustment to this issue can
make the banks ready for further financial alterations.

School of Management Studies, Techno India

Abstract
Eco-sensitive businesses focus on wealth generation for the present
and at the same time preserving and conserving the natural resources
for the sustainable existence of the future. Preliminary investigative
interviews indicate that the probable missing link between
organizational eco-sensitive policy framework and organizational
green performance is employee engagement and commitment in
appreciating the significance of ‘believing and acting’ green. The paper
aims to develop a conceptual ‘game’ framework to boost employee
engagement and participation to achieve environmental sustainability
accentuating towards organizational green success. The authors
attempted to transform selective HR processes with ‘green elements’
into playful games; the objective is simply to engage the employees
into green HR framework of the organization by utilizing the fun and
competitive spirit of gamification to ensure their practice. This novel
approach to gamify green HRM will engage employees to ‘practice
green with pleasure’ or inspire ‘greening with fun’.

An Analytical Study on Relationship
between Emotional Intelligence and
Self-Esteem among Post Graduate
Management Students
Beena John Jiby
Sai Balaji Education Society

Abstract
Emotional intelligence and self esteem is very important among
management students to attain success in their personal lives and
professional career as Personal accomplishments depends on their
ability to interpret others signals and react aptly to them. A few
Studies have opined that a lot of people with high cognitive abilities
measured by intelligence quotient tests are not very successful in their
individual and professional lives, compared to those with an average
IQ. It is because Intelligence quotient has maximum 20% role and
the remaining 80% is linked to skill related to emotional intelligence
(Goleman, 1998). Hence Emotional intelligence (EQ) is one of the
most helpful factors in an individual’s personal and professional
success along with self esteem.
This study is to understand the link between self-esteem and emotional
intelligence amongst Post graduate management students in Pune.
Study was conducted with a sample size (N=177) and collected by a
cross-sectional study. Post graduate management students’ Self-esteem
measured by Rosenberg scale and emotional intelligence by Wong
and Law scale. Data analysis done by Independent t-test, Pearson
Coefficient of correlation, ANOVA . Data analysis showed there is
an affirmative link between self-esteem and emotional intelligence
among the management students.

Abstract
In today’s ever dynamic environment, with a new wave of change in
societies, new technologies, etc., organizations need to be innovative,
proactive and in other words practice Entrepreneurial Behavior (EB) i.e.
set of actions that lead to opportunity identification and the creation of
a new organization(s), by value addition. There are several individual
and organizational level factors that affect individual capabilities in
order to display EB within organizations. This study focus on the
effect of individual level competency: Emotional Intelligence (EI) on
managerial EB, which remains less researched upon. While it goes
undisputed that EB, displayed by employees is influenced by work
environment and do change over time, evidence also confirms that
the rank order of individuals remains somewhat stable, the stability
being argued to be associated with certain personality dispositions
(George 1992). So it becomes imperative to further research in this
area while considering individual level capabilities, such as EI in
order to display EB. The paper intends to contribute to this field of
research by carrying out a correlational study between Trait Emotional
Intelligence (TEI) and managerial EB. Also, the study tries to examine
the effect of gender and managerial level on the relationship between
TEI and managerial EB within organizations. A sample consisting
of 104 managers was taken for the study from various sectors across
India. Multiple regression, correlation and hierarchical regression tests
were performed to check the statistical validity. The study indicates a
positive correlation between TEI & EB. However, very interestingly,
it shows very weak correlation of self-control dimension of TEI with
EB. Also, self-control didn’t emerge as a significant variance predictor
in EB. The study holds theoretical and practical implications for

Abstract
The study investigates the process of reverse socialization where kids
influence the knowledge, skill and attitude of parents. It explores how
kids socialize their parents by exerting a power over their parents in
the parental adoption and usage of mobile technologies. To illustrate
the concept of reverse socialization smart phone is selected as the
product category which is relatively new to the market and parents face
son1e sort of difficulty where as kids have high level of knowledge
and expertise. Product knowledge of kids and parental intention to
use mobile technologies is mediated by the expert power kids have
over their parents. Based on the dyadic perception, kids exert a lot of
influence in parental usage and adoption of new mobile applications
like mobile payments, mobile wallets etc.

Locus of Control: Conceptualization,
Application and Predictive
Ability - A Literature Review
Lakshmi Murthy, Poornima Tapas
Institute for Technology and Management, Mumbai
Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune
Symbiosis International (Deemed) University

Abstract
Based on previous research in areas such as behavioral control, skill
determined, or chance determined behavior, reinforcements and
its impact on outcomes, Julian Rotter conceptualized the “Locus of
Control” Scale through his experiments. It became a key personality
trait measure in the coming years and was used in Psychology,
human behavior assessment, training interventions, and counselling.
Reinforcement and Rewards effect human behavior with respect to their
skill and acquisition of knowledge (Rotter, 1966) but the perception at
individual levels differs. The perception that the individual has of the
reward or reinforcement or gratification is a result of his or her own
behavior or attribute or is contingent upon the external factors or non-
behavior factors (Rotter, 1966).
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to construct an objective
summary of available research evidence (Wallston & Wallston, 1978)
on the concept of locus of control and provide a bird’s eye view of the
accessible body of research, its application and predictive ability. The
purpose is to find if there exists research on impact of Locus of Control
on Women in their career management and growth. The reason of
finding such body of knowledge is to utilize the academic research in
enabling women to scale the career heights up to the pinnacle, which
today is being on corporate board as Independent Director. Since
most of available research in this area is based in Western world, in
the context of growing Indian economy and opportunity available to
women, understanding pathways to growth will be useful.
Design/Methodology/Approach - The paper is based on an extensive
study of available literature by authors before and after Rotter defined
the Locus of Control concept and Scale. Book of Abstracts

Findings - Locus of Control (LoC) as a personality trait measure
has been applied widely to study various aspects like achievement,
performance, academic excellence, job satisfaction, job search etc.
With respect to women, the studies are limited especially in case of
career women and their LoC. Most of studies have conflicting and
confusing findings, some are inconclusive. Very rarely LoC studied as
single variable.

Job Uncertainty after Ph.D : A Common
Concern for Doctoral Students of Technical
Institutes of North East India
Loitongbam Athouba Meetei, N.B Singh,
Tridib Sarma
National Institute of Technology, Silchar

Abstract
A doctoral degree is the highest level of academic degree awarded
by an academic institute. The doctoral program not only prepared the
workforce to become faculties, administrator and researcher in an
academic institute but also prepared the workforce for industry
and business organization. These workforces play a very important
role to developed innovation which is the main driving force of
economic growth of a nation. Attrition of doctoral students is wastage
of resources and time of both faculties and students which could
otherwise be utilized elsewhere. High attrition rates are costly for
an academic institute. Attrition reduces research output which is an
important factor while evaluating the status of an institution.
Limited numbers of studies had been done on doctoral student’s
satisfaction and attrition in India. The present study is an attempt to
explore the experience of doctoral students and also to find the factors
influencing satisfaction of doctoral students studying in the technical
institutes of North East India. An offline survey was conducted with
300 doctoral students studying Engineering, Science, Mathematics
and Humanities & Management. Data collected were analyzed using
factor analysis and hierarchical multiple regression. It has been
found that supervisor/guide and department support, reason for doing
PhD,stress & lack of motivation, insecurity were found to contribute
41% of Doctoral students’ satisfaction with a p-value of 0.039.
Doctoral students have mentioned that if they quit the following
reasons: not sure to get a good salary job after PhD., lack of support
from the department, because of my guide and topic related issue will
be responsible for dropping out of the doctoral program. The doctoral
students studying in different departments have a common fear of not
getting a matching job after PhD. Book of Abstracts

Pune – A Reality Check

Symbiosis Institute of International Business

Abstract
Purpose - MSME – Micro Small and Medium Enterprises have been
the backbone of the economy. They are in the limelight as they are
perceived to play a big role in creating jobs. Researchers have had
multiple views on the existence of HRM in small firms. This study
aims to understand if a human resource function exists in small firms
and attempts to identify its determinants.
Design - Previous research highlights numerous evidences of the
presence of human resource practices in small firms. Some firms also
have an independent HR function. Multiple factors contribute to the
presence of HRM in a firm. A theoretical model proposed, links these
factors to the presence of a HR department. Using a questionnaire,
data across more than hundred small firms spanning manufacturing
and services sectors in the city of Pune was gathered. The data was
analysed to understand the impact of the antecedent factors on the
possibility of a firm investing in a HR function.
Findings - Small firms implement HR practices. In some cases, few
practices are followed according to the personality of the owner. In
others, an independent HR function has been found to operate. HR
professional recruited externally, drive and implement HR processes.
It has been observed; certain factors have a stronger co-relation to
small firms investing in HRM. The HR department mostly focussed
on people related transactions, leading to standardisation and bringing
in formality into day to day HR processes.
Value - Small firms are involved in numerous transactional tasks
leaving the owner less time to plan. As small firms scale up en-route
to becoming a medium enterprise and as the complexity of business
increases, investment in a formal human resource function gains
significance. Attracting, retaining and in some cases developing

Abstract
A Startup entity in India is defined as an entity which is registered
in India not earlier than seven years and has a turnover of not more
than Rs.25 crores per annum. Startup entities forms part of Micro,
Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector entities which play an
important role in growth and contribution to Indian Economy. Despite
playing an important role in the economy, these entities are not able
to avail finance through banks. Availability of bank finance has been a
matter of serious concern for startup enterprises. Various reasons for
non-availability of bank finance by these entities have been studied
in the past, however, the role of bankers’ leadership styles has not
been explored well. Although leadership in banking sector is well
researched, studies on role of leadership styles in decisions made by
bankers on providing loan to startup entrepreneurs are non-existent.
The objective of this study is therefore to find out the influence
of three leadership styles viz. transformational, transactional and
laissez-faire leadership styles of bankers in taking a decision on loan
to startup entrepreneur.
Findings: the findings of this paper indicate that out of three leadership
styles, transformational and transactional leadership styles have
a significant role on decisions made by bankers on loan to startup
entrepreneurs while, laissez-faire leadership style did not have a
significant influence.

Abstract
Purpose – The purpose of this paper was to explore whether there
existed certain criteria which may be creating a bottleneck and/or
which may be preventing women from reaching leadership or top
management positions in India.
Design/methodology/approach – The study used comprehensive
qualitative interviews with 24 mid-career women executives working
in the private sector aged between 38 and 52 who also fell into the ‘mid-
life’ age group and who had encountered life and career adjustments
after entering their mid-career stage. Analysis of the findings was
made using content analysis.
Findings – Findings of the study point to an intricate relationship
between certain individual, work life and socio-cultural factors
in India and their influence on both work and life spheres and
ultimately career pathing. Being in both ‘mid-career’ and ‘mid-life’
stages added significantly to this complex interplay. Women made
adjustments in both work and life spheres, however, most women felt
their careers and life goals had suffered in one way or the other while
trying to balance both work and life spheres. Many a time women
felt constrained by trying to fit into the ‘ideal Indian wife/mother/
daughter-in-law image’.
Adequate support systems at home and work and certain behaviour/
personality characteristic were reported to be major factors in
ensuring work-life balance which ultimately aided in keeping
careers on track. Organisation work culture was found to both help
and hinder career pathing.

Abstract
Gamification in organizations is gaining movement as an intervention
for employee development. Studies on gamification have provided
directions with regards to its application in human resource
management. This study investigated the relationship between
the perceived intervention of gamification by human resource
personnel and its perceived application of gamification. The study
examined responses of human resource managers and trainers in
software development companies at Bangalore, India, through the
structured instrument and gathered the perception of the application
of gamification. Results of the study through proposed hypotheses
indicated that there is a meaningful relationship between the perceived
intervention of gamification with that of the perceived application
of gamification for training and performance management. The
implications of results would benefit human resource managers
and trainers in framing directions both in designing and improving
employee training and performance management strategies. This
study is path-breaking indeed, given that there are very few studies
examining the relationship between the variables considered in the
present study.

Abstract
The purpose of the study is to find out the critical dimensions of quality
of work life (QWL) for today’s information technology (IT) employees.
Further, the study is trying to find out the association of demographic
variables with QWL and organizational commitment (OC). Firstly,
to test the reliability and validity of the questionnaire principal
components analysis, rotated component matrix and Cronbach’s
alpha are used. Subsequently, the mixed model and multi-regression
methods are applied to test the relationship between the said variables.
The sample size for the study consists of 618 employees (respondents)
from 21 large-cap (large-capital) IT companies. The findings suggest
that 13 variables of QWL play a tremendous role in the work life of
IT employees. The results show that there is a significant relationship
between the qualification and number of dependents with QWL and
OC both. Moreover, a substantial relationship between QWL and
affective commitment of IT employees is found. The results further
reveal that there exists a strong link between various dimensions of
QWL with OC.

Blue Oceans Leadership Practices: Journey
from Disengagement to Engagement of
Employees in an Organization

Tanusree Chakraborty
Presidency University

Abstract
Ten years back, two INSEAD educators kicked things off by displaying
“blue ocean framework,” another model for finding uncontested markets
that are prepared for improvement. In this article, they apply their
thoughts and gadgets to what is possibly the best trial of organization:
closing the straight between the potential and the recognized capacity
and imperativeness of delegates. Research demonstrates that this
narrows is gigantic: According to Gallup, 70% of workers are pulled
back from their occupations. In the event that organizations could
figure out how to change over them into connected representatives,
the outcomes could be transformative. The inconvenience is, directors
do not have an unmistakable comprehension of what changes
they could make to draw out the best in everyone. Here, Kim and
Mauborgne offer an answer for that issue: a methodical way to deal
with revealing, at each level of the association, which administration
acts and exercises will rouse representatives to give their everything,
and a procedure for getting supervisors all through the organization to
begin doing them. Blue sea administration works in light of the fact
that the administrators’ “clients”- that is, the general population chiefs
regulate and answer to-are associated with recognizing what’s viable
and what isn’t. Additionally, the approach doesn’t expect pioneers
to adjust their identity, just to attempt an alternate arrangement of
undertakings. Also, that sort of progress is considerably simpler to
actualize and track than changes to esteems and attitudes.

Abstract
Purpose – This paper examines the relationship between the use of
gamification and recruitment process for top talent in order to gain
competitive advantage and uses Actor Network theory in this context.
Gamification involves two main aspects i.e. interactivity and the
idea of winning. Both the aspects are critical to attracting talent and
selecting only those who are most likely to succeed in organization.
Design/methodology/approach –Research papers, articles and
reports from various research databases like Scopus, Ebsco were
explored for further clarity on the construct. Online databases were
used to explore the articles to analyse gamification in various contexts.
Findings –Analysis of research papers suggested that the actors, i.e.
applicants who apply the same principles as are employed in gaming
are able to form networked association among themselves. They work
on the dual platforms of co-operation and competition to increase their
chance of playing the game as best as they could. This ability to interact
and the desire to win can work as the underlying magnet to attract and
identify the top talent that are key drivers of business in any organization.
Actor Network Theory (ANT) throws light on these aspects.
Managerial/Theoretical/ Policy/ Practical implications – The key
distinction between this research and that carried by other gamification
scholars is that it identifies the innate capacity possessed by top talent
to harness the game mechanics of sociability and community in order to
achieve the goal co-operatively. This research provides insight into how
gamification techniques should be modified or customized to identify
innate capacity of talented candidates who have a higher probability of
Book of Abstracts succeeding in organization and driving the business growth.

Originality/value – This paper refers to Actor Network theory and
the interaction between the human and non human elements, here, the
applicants and the gamification tools, to serve the greater organizational
purpose. Questions that interrogate between rules and practices arise,
viz. can the game be effectively customized to achieve a sophisticated
and enhanced selection outcome. By applying the gamification as
the reference point within the Actor Network theory, their associated
potential for further research and applications is achieved.
Limitations of the Study and Scope for Further Research - This
research is primarily based on literature review through secondary
sources. There is scope to conduct primary research and improvise the
recommendations for tailoring gamification techniques for improved
selection of top talent.

National Institute of Technology, Silchar

Abstract
Insurance in India is a very old industry and it has seen many phases
starting from British Raj to Monopoly and ending up with privatisation
followed by new reforms in this sector. The structural changes initiated
by IRDA has improved the working of the industry as is evidenced by
a remarkable growth in insurance density and penetration. In India,
insurance density increased from 11.5 USD in 2001 to 59.7 USD in
2016, Insurance penetration increased from 2.7% in 2001 to 3.49% in
2016. The increased role of insurance, especially in the post-reform
era, in financial intermediation has strengthened its link with bank and
capital market and as such the significance of insurance in economic
growth of India should have also grown over the years, as is evidenced
by a number of studies. The present study aims to investigate the
relationship between insurance and economic growth in all the states
of India. This will give a better insight into the role of insurance in
the states and to take appropriate steps to streamline the issues, if any.
This study was conducted on 32 states of India for a period of six
years from 2010-2015. The study used Correlation and Regression
Analysis to investigate the relationship. The study concludes that Life
Insurance Premium and Non-Life Insurance premium has a positive
and significant impact on Economic Growth in few states. Majority of
the states either have a negative impact of Life Insurance Premium on
Economic Growth or do not have any significant relationship at all.

Abstract
This study uses Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) to determine the
factors that are considered by an Indian equity investor before investing
in stock market. Also, through Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP),
the relative importance of each factor is determined by providing rank
to them. A questionnaire survey was taken by 311 respondents who had
previously invested in equity market. Factors identified by applying
EFA were knowledge, risk, returns, cash availability, willingness to
invest, and trust. AHP was applied on identified factors in order to
determine their relative importance. The findings of AHP reveals that
willingness to invest and cash availability hold equal importance for
an investor, followed by knowledge of the equity market whereas
return, risk and trust holds relatively less important role in the decision
making for an equity investor.

Towards a self-sustaining Pension System:
Heralding better Fiscal Discipline
Bala Bhaskaran
Shanti Business School

Abstract
This conceptual paper explores the prospects of converting the pension
liabilities of the government appearing in the budget every year into
a self-sustaining pension system by creating corpus fund under a
Pension Fund Authority [PFA]. The size of the corpus fund is quite
large and hence raising the fund poses challenges. The paper explores
examples of transition, though much smaller in size and complexity, to
build its argument. The paper examines various alternatives to provide
an action-plan for the government.
A self-sustaining pension system leads to an effective social security
system and thus becomes the hall-mark of a civilized society. The
challenges of implementation, though daunting, the paper concludes
are not insurmountable. It brings in fair amount of fiscal discipline and
reduces the prospect of inflation. It would usher in professionalism
in fund management, enhance the funds available for investment and
thus would lead to increased growth prospects in the economy.

Abstract
In India, the life of the tribe is intimately connected with the forests.
Majority of the tribal population in India lives inside the forests and
make a living out of NTFPs. Unfortunately due to deforestation and
indefensible harvesting of the rich forest resource, sustaining of the
tribal community has been threatened. It is imperative to rehabilitate
the forest resources to improve the sustainable livelihood of the tribal
people through inclusive policies. The present study intends to study
socio economic characteristics of tribal people, composition of income
and employment and dependence on NTFP for the livelihoods of
Tribal people of Western Ghats of Maharashtra. This paper also pleads
on inclusive policies to ensure the livelihood. The study is confined
to the Surgana, Navapur, Mokhada, and Shahapur taluka of Nashik,
Nandurbar, Palghar and Thane district, based on the highest tribal
population. 160 respondents were selected by random selection of
40 respondents from each Taluka, on two stages stratified sampling
techniques. The results of multiple regression analysis shows that the
wage earning opportunity, land holding and family size are the major
factors involving NTFPs collection and marketing. The Logistic
analysis shows that family type, family size and land holding have
increased the probability whereas agriculture income and wage income
reduced the probability for NTFPs collection. Through the designed
framework the NTFPs will provide stable income and employment
source as compared to the other sources. There should be an institutional
arrangement between the tribal people and the forest department or the
ministry to take the sustainable initiative to reduce the dependence on
the NTFPs collection by providing the tribal people the opportunities
through wages and agriculture by providing better crop facility and
land allotment without hampering the ecosystem. The participatory
management is the key for sustainable development of the forest

Abstract
Sustainable development goals adopted by the United Nations in
2015 emphasise on poverty reduction and inclusive growth. In India,
development policies focusing on poverty reduction have been
implemented since independence. However these have not been very
effective. The state governments in India have an important and larger
role to play in poverty alleviation and therefore it is necessary to
measure performance of states in respect of the same.
This paper measures efficiency with which poverty has been
alleviated in 19 states, comprising 96% India’s population using Data
Envelopment Analysis (DEA) for the years 2006, 2010 and 2014.
The analysis is made by using four input variables namely growth,
development expenditure, irrigation and government performance.
Percentage of non-poor is used as output variable.
Resource rich states are found to be inefficient whereas states with
resource scarcity use them efficiently. Moreover poor states with
lower per capita G.D.P. are found to be more efficient as compared
to those with higher per capita G.D.P. The states with high incidence
of poverty are found to be catching up with states with low incidence
of poverty. It is found that inequality and high indebtedness of the
people, adversely impacts the efficiency of states to reduce poverty.

Reaction of Equity Markets to Introduction
of Schemes and Regulations for NPA
Management in India

Symbiosis Institute of Business Management
Symbiosis International (Deemed) University

Abstract
The Indian economy enjoyed a period of high growth from 2002 to 2008
partly fuelled by the availability of easy bank credit. Slow growth post
2008 led to a reduction in both the demand and availability of credit.
Further, a number of companies that had borrowed indiscriminately
during the high growth phase were not in a position to repay their
loans as a result of slow economic growth and other sectorial issues.
Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) grew many fold and reached alarming
levels in 2013. Available mechanisms and acts such as Corporate
Debt Restructuring (CDR), Recovery of Debts due to Banks and
Financial Institutions Act, 1993 (RDDBFI, The Securitisation and
Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest
Act (SARFAESI), The Sick Industrial Companies Act (SIC), were
not adequate to address the growing concern of NPAs. Subsequently,
several regulatory changes were introduced commencing with the
early recognition of financial distress in December 2013. This study
aims to gauge the stock market reactions to various reform initiatives
by conducting event study analysis. Our findings capture the reaction
of banking stocks to various measures introduced for the resolution of
NPAs in the Indian banking system right from 2013 to the passage of
the “The Banking Regulation Amendment Ordinance (2017)” in May
2017, which gives significant powers to the Reserve Bank of India,
a measure that is quoted as being the “Brahmastra” (most powerful
weapon). The study identifies the banking stocks which reacted
positively or negatively to the reform announcements during the study
period and measures the change in systematic risk in these stocks.
The study finds banking stock have not earned significant abnormal
returns on the announcement of regulatory measures. However, the
Book of Abstracts systematic risk of the Banking index reduced significantly on the
International introduction of regulatory measures, and this risk reduction has been

Development, Pune
Symbiosis International (Deemed University)

Abstract
The present study aims to address the issue of financial inclusion
through the development of mobile penetration in India. The study
follows qualitative research design and addresses the nexus between
financial inclusion and mobile telephony from the demand side. The
study conducted 52 in-depth interviews collected under naturalistic
observations from the ‘Urban Poor1’ segment of society across major
cities of India. Open coding method is followed to analyze the in-depth
interviews to assimilate information from various emerging themes.
Qualitative data analysis identified various themes to understand the
usage of mobile telephony for any financial transaction, financial
planning by the ‘Urban Poor’. The study explored various reasons
behind financial exclusion of ‘Urban Poor’ and level of awareness
towards mobile telephony adoption as a means of financial inclusion.
The study found reliance on cash and physical currency, financial
illiteracy, technological illiteracy, avoidance due to change reluctance,
fear of risking money, limited money supply to meet daily needs as the
major themes emerged during the analysis.

A Study on Policy of Controlling Number
of IPOs in Primary Market to Control
Volatility in Secondary Market in India
Kaushal Bhatt, Ashok Bantwa

GLS University Gujrat

Abstract
IPO activity in the primary market can have the considerable impact
on stock market outcomes. The country like China is following the
policy of controlling the number of public issues to manage stock
market volatility in the secondary market. This paper is aimed at
exploring the feasibility of above policy in the Indian market and
analyzing the relationship between IPO activity and stock market
volatility. Trough empirical data analysis it has been found that the
relationship between the closing value of SENSEX and the total
amount raised through public issues is weak negative implying that
primary market investment in India has a very little role to play in
controlling volatility in the secondary market. Due to a very small size
of IPO activity compared to overall market capitalization of the stock
market, the policy of allowing more number of IPOs in rising market
(Hot market) and restricting the number of IPOs in declining market
(Cold market) to control market volatility cannot work effectively in
the Indian context. Stock market volatility is inversely related with the
number of public issues and fund raised through public issues implying
that issuers prefer to stay away from the primary market during the
period of high volatility. In India average level of underpricing of 481
sampled IPOs during the study period of 10 years is 13.9%. Book built
IPOs are underpriced more than fixed price IPOs. IPOs are underpriced
more in hot market period compare to cold market periods. The level
of underpricing is positively related with market volatility implying
that higher underpricing is required to attract the investors during the
period of high volatility in stock market.

Efficiency Test on the Indian Index Options
Market: Empirical Evidence from S&P
CNX Nifty Index Options
Kelvin Mutum, Ashim Kr. Das
National Institute of Technology, Silchar

Abstract
This article examines the pricing efficiency of the S&P CNX Nifty
index options by empirically testing the put-call spot parity (PCPS), a
model-free approach. The data are collected from the National Stock
Exchange (NSE) and it consists of the daily closing price of Nifty
index options contracts from 1st April 2012 to 31st March 2017.
In order to understand the behavior of mispriced signals (violation
of PCPS), the frequency and magnitude of mispriced signals are
examined according to specified liquidity and maturity levels. This
has been done with the view that mere mispricing of options does
not indicate the inefficiency of the market. It is the opportunity to
extract abnormal profit (arbitrage) from these mispriced signals which
give serious threat to the market efficiency. Further, in order to verify
whether the difference in the mean magnitude of mispriced signals
at different liquidity and maturity levels are statistically significant,
hypotheses have been formulated and tested. The results of the study
indicate that Indian index options market during the period of study
was efficient as there were no abnormal profit opportunities.

Novel approach to estimate expected
Non-Performing Assets (NPA) of Indian
banks using Stochastic point process
Kss Iyer, Vijayalakshmi Chetlapalli,
Madhavi Damle
Symbiosis Institute of Telecom Management
Symbiosis International (Deemed) University

Abstract
The purpose of the present work is to forecast expected Non-
Performing Assets (NPA) to Indian banks due to different types of
loans. The various drivers that govern the repayment of loans are
hard to observe like genuine intention to repay the loans and willful
defaulting etc. and evolve over a period of time.
For most of the banks, loans are the largest and most obvious source
of credit risk. Defaults of different types of loan repayments occur at
random instants of time with random losses to the banks built up over
a period of time resulting in NPA. This fits in with a class of techniques
of stochastic process known as Random Point Process(RPP). In this
paper, we want to derive a stochastic model to forecast NPA at any time
t. The closed form analytic expression will enable the banks to adopt
corrective measures to decrease the NPA. This will also enable the
RBI to forewarn the banks. The banks should monitor the repayment
of the loans by observing the delaying pattern of the repayment pattern
of the customers from time to time. This is observed by the number of
customers delaying the repayment of their loans beyond certain period
of time. We observe this by using a technique of stochastic process
known as Product Density(PD). The aggregate sum of default losses
to banks due to different types of loans built up over a period of time
results in NPA. The expected NPA is a function of time, expected loss
due to different types of loans, probability of default and recovery rates
of the loans. In RPP events occur at random points of time and each of
these events trigger another random process and the interest of study
is the cumulative buildup over a period of time. We use techniques
of Stochastic point process like Product density and Random point
Book of Abstracts process to translate the NPA problem to analytical model.

These techniques have been successfully used in ‘50s and ‘60s to track
down the Cosmic ray particles of above certain energy levels, number
of malignant cells in a Tumors and age dependent population growth.
Default probability of the repayment is the first step in estimating
NPA. Estimation of default probability involves quantifying of hard to
observe factors like willful defaulting and genuine defaulting. These
factors are coming from hidden states. We classify the borrowers into
three groups namely low, medium and high risk and they form the
hidden states. The banks can classify them based upon them know
your customer data. Since NPA is a function of default probability,
we evaluate the probability of default using Hidden Markov Model.
HMM is also known as doubly stochastic process where the hidden
states obey Markov process. A HMM consists of a transition matrix
giving the transition probabilities among the hidden states, emission or
observable matrix consisting of probabilities of willful defaulting and
genuine defaulting and initial values of the hidden states for certain
period of time, HMM calculates the optimal sequence of states giving
maximum probability of default. Algorithms like that of Viterbi’s are
available to estimate the optimal sequence. A working methodology
for the banks to evaluate the probability of default is also given. In the
absence of real data, we have validated the model by assuming certain
values for probability of default and recovery rate and are presented
in graphs.

Abstract
The present study aims to address the factors which affect the decision
of house buying in the semi-urban settings in India. The study
follows qualitative research design to understand the patterns which
influences the psychological aspirations of Indian households where
they consider Housing as a commodity. The study conducted 46 in-
depth interviews and focused group discussions from the households
across different age groups, gender and income groups. Preference
for home ownership was found to defy the parameters of rationality
as defined in economics. This unique preference is guided by many
attendant parameters like the age of respondents, the decision makers
in the family, involvement in the political process and many other
such factors influencing them in an augmented manner.

Abstract
This research paper is an attempt to study the influence of
demographic factors on mental accounting bias exhibited by retail
investors. The research is primarily descriptive in nature and
quantitative in approach. Survey technique with questionnaire was
used to collect numerical data from 389 respondents. The influence
of demographics on mental accounting bias was identified with the
help of χ2 (Chi-Square) test. An attempt was made to search for
those demographic factors that have a significant influence on mental
accounting exhibited by retail investors. The findings reveal that the
demographic variables particularly age, gender and annual income
have an association and are responsible for his showing susceptibility
to mental accounting bias and leading to irrational behavior. It was
further analyzed whether significant differences exist among groups
susceptible and not susceptible to mental accounting bias and also
to establish the accuracy of the classification. Using a Discriminant
Analysis, it was established that significant differences exist among
the two groups i.e. investors susceptible to mental accounting bias
and investors not susceptible to mental accounting bias, and the
classification was found accurate to the extent of 65%. In particular,
Age, Annual Income, Educational Qualification and Marital Status
show loading more than 0.3 which suggest these characteristics of
investors are the function that discriminates between the two groups
of investors. This awareness will lead to a conscious and cautious
action on part of the investor and help him in not falling prey to the
consequences of mental short cuts, especially mental accounting
during the investment decision making process.

Abstract
Rajasthan has seen a tremendous growth in the past few years, but
still there are households who are not linked to the banking system
yet. Easy accessibility and adequate knowledge of financial services
is still a big challenge in rural and semi urban area. Financial inclusion
is an important factor to mainstream poor with the formal financial
system. It provides access to credit and makes a broad range of
financial services. However, factors like illiteracy, inadequate income
and lack of awareness limit the poor people to utilize services offered
by the bank. The study examines the financial attitude, Behavior and
Knowledge among the people of Rajasthan and interpret the effect
on financial inclusion. The research would be segregated based
on aspects leading to financial exclusion like age, gender, income,
education level, occupation, demographic, etc. The research is done
using statistical tools of hypothesis testing by ANOVA, Chi-square
and two sampling tests to know the relationship between demographic
and psychographic factors affecting financial inclusion. The paper
concludes that there is a strong relationship between various aspects
leading to financial exclusion. This study is based on the primary
research done in Rajasthan state with 1205 respondents. The research
can be used as a tool for decision making in operations of various
financial institutions and knowing the pattern of financial decisions
of people. The study tries to show the present scenario of Financial
Inclusion in the state of Rajasthan. The study is done by analyzing
the basic and advanced financial knowledge of people, their spending
pattern and interpreting the results thereof. The financial decision
pattern helps in managing, monitoring and maintaining financial
stability and to prevent economic shocks.

Thomas Paul Kattookaran
St. Thomas College (Autonomous) Thrissur

Abstract
The present study is an attempt to analyze the trend and pattern
of infrastructure investment in India from 1961-62 to 2015-16.
It focuses on the investment pattern of public infrastructure and
private infrastructure and their relative contribution to the total
infrastructure investment of India over these years. The study also
builds a Box-Jenkins ARIMA model for forecasting the future
values of infrastructure investment by public and private sector. The
liberalization process proved to be a major catalyst for the growth
of private infrastructure investment but not for public infrastructure
investment. However, the positive impact that liberalization had on
private infrastructure investment has gradually disappeared. In spite
of all the efforts that government puts in to boost private infrastructure
investment, the growth rate has plummeted to greater depths. The
results of ARIMA forecasting further states that private infrastructure
investment will have a stagnant growth rate without making any
commendable progress in the coming five years. If left unnoticed, this
prediction will come true and private infrastructure investment would
face major downturns in India.

Abstract
Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) states that markets are always
efficient and all the new information about the stocks is immediately
incorporated in the stock prices. As a result of this, no individual is
able to take advantage of the new information. Critics of EMH have
contended that the information is not always immediately assimilated
in the prices of the stock. The investors try to take advantage of any
extra information to make profit in the stock market.
Analyst recommendation is one such way through which investor
get information about different stocks in the market. This study talks
about the possibility of an investor earning abnormal returns if they act
on the basis of the recommendations made by the financial research
analysts. This paper looks at recommendations made by financial
research analysts in varied sectors over a time period of 2015-2017.
The study included twenty-five companies in five sectors. Using event
study methodology, we studied and analysed stock price movements
before and after the analyst recommendations. Four time windows of
5 days (+ 2 days), 11 days (+ 5 days), 21 days (+ 10 days) and 41 days
(+ 20 days) are taken into account. Based on the analysis, we find
that there is a very small influence on the stock prices of the of the
particular stocks on which recommendations have been made by the
financial research analysts. Based on these results, there is found to be
very small amount of availability bias in our dataset.

Applying Piotroski’s Investment Model to
Indian Markets: An Empirical Study
Ritesh Khatwani, Mahima Mishra,
Madhura Bedarkar, Shubhra Anand
Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune
Symbiosis International (Deemed) University

Abstract
Studying portfolio performance based on book-to-market ratio has
been a long tradition in finance and security analysis. An initial study
by Graham and Dodd (1934), compared the performance of value
stock versus growth stocks and observed that value stocks (high
book to price ratio) performed better than growth stocks. Subsequent
studies (Rosenberg (1984), Fama and French (1992; 1993; 1996),
Lakonishok (1994), Piotroski (2000), and Lopes and Galdi (2007))
validated this finding, though the underlying reasons explaining the
performance gap between value and growth stocks differ and have
largely remained an area of controversy (Doukas et al., 2002). These
reasons range from overlooked risk factors being uncovered by this
ratio (Fama and French, 1993) to mispricing Lakonishok (1994).
In the year 2000, Piotroski studied US firms and found that 44%
companies with favorable book to market ratio performed well in two
years after portfolio formation (Piotroski, J. D.[2000]). Eventually,
there were certain fundamental factors which separated winners
from losers which he claimed could be uncovered by attributing
scores to accounting parameters. His findings were further studied
by Mohanram (2005) who observed that information contained in
financial statements could help differentiate between performing and
non-performing shares from the basket of high book to market ratio
firms, which may not be revealed by prices.
Piotroski puts forth following argument in favor of High book to
market value (HBM) firms:
1. Brokers and investigators by and large do not follow such stocks.
2. Informal information regarding such firms is low and as such
published financial data for such firm becomes the most reliable
source of information.

fundamentals, such as liquidity, financial leverage, profitability and
cash flows. These characteristics can be assessed through analysis of
financial statements. Since these aspects are universal in nature, their
analysis should work well in any market, including emerging markets
(Coorey and Wickremsinghey 2007).
India as a strong emerging market provides a great opportunity
to apply and test the profitability of accounting based analysis.
Literature talks about a weak market efficiency of Indian market
(Gupta and Basu, 2007; Pandey, 2003). India is a part of the BRICS
nations and has attracted substantial investment from the world.
In fact, Indian markets have received one of the highest portfolio
investment in the world.
The study finds that such analysis can help investors classify between
strong performing and weak performing HBM stocks. Strong stocks
help investors gain from market both on gross as well as risk adjusted
basis. The main objective of this research project is to investigate if
Piotroski‘s F-Score analysis strategy can help investors earn higher
returns on a portfolio of HBM companies in Indian stock market.

Efficiency and Productivity of Indian
Microfinance Institutions
Santa Kar, Joyeeta Deb
Assam University

Abstract
Microfinance is a powerful mechanism for combating poverty by
linking the vulnerable section of the society with formal financial
service. Microfinance is considered to be a blessing for the growth
of developing nations. Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) are the
special organizations that provide microfinance services to the
poor. Microfinance Institutions are characterised by duel aspect of
providing financial services to the poor and at the same time they need
to be sustainable. Balancing between these two aspects is the biggest
challenge faced by Microfinance Institutions. The Microfinance
crisis in India (2011) marked the affect of commercialization of
Microfinance Institutions. The present study thus attempts to gauge
the efficiency of the Indian Microfinance Institutions considering
both their financial as well as social aspects. The study further tries
to estimate the productivity growth or decline. The study considers
time period of seven years (2009 to 2015). The study is made upon
fifty-five (55) Indian MFIs. Non-parametric DEA technique is
used to gauge efficiency and Malmquist Index is used to estimate
productivity change.
Result of the study shows that on average the MFIs have Technical
Efficiency (TE) score of 74 percent, reflecting that the Indian MFIs
have cost saving potentiality to an extent of around 26 percent.
Further, Malmquist result shows that over the study period, the Indian
MFIs suffered decline in Total Factor Productivity Change to an
extent of 96.4 percent, which is mainly due to Technological Change
(95 percent).

Abstract
Muslims all over the world and in India try to live their lives according to
the Shariah or Islamic principles. Shariah plays an important role even
in the financial aspects of their lives and particularly the prohibition of
interest. Keeping with beliefs of the Muslim population many of the
Muslim and Non Muslim countries have introduced Islamic finance
or banking in some form or the other. But India with a population
of 13.4 % of Muslims is still debating on the introduction of Islamic
banking. This particular paper furthers investigates and explores the
mind of the Muslims community through a field survey and provides
insight about the financial inclusion of Muslims in India, their banking
and saving habits, their opinions and awareness of Islamic banking in
particular, the future potential and prospects for Islamic banking in
India. Since it is difficult to cover the vast Muslim majority a selective
sampling method was applied by the researcher. Mumbai and Pune
were selected for the urban population, whereas Khed Shivapur is
considered in the rural survey. A Logit model is also used to find out
the significant factors contributing to the potential of Islamic banks in
India. It is found but that though majority of the Muslims would like
to use Islamic banking they is a need for awareness of working of the
Islamic banks and finance among them.

How Does Microfinance Addresses
Documentation and Psychological Barriers
to Financial Inclusion- An Evidence from
Mirzapur District of India
Vijeta Singh, Puja Padhi
Amity University, Noida
Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay

Abstract
In recent years microfinance has emerged as one of the most effective
financial intermediary for advancing financial inclusion goals.
Microfinance refers to the provision of financial services on a small
scale to the rural and urban poor including the self-employed to meet
their productive as well as consumption needs1. The literature in
finance has identified several barriers to financial inclusion of which
documentation; gender, cultural and cost barrier figure most. In the
light of the barriers faced in accessing financial services, the present
study attempts to highlight the role of microfinance models (SHG and
JLG) in addressing documentation and psychological barriers through
a survey conducted in the Mirzapur district of India. The paper using
logistic regression concluded that higher documentation requirements
aggravates documentation barriers while being literate/educated
reduces documentation barriers. On the other hand provision of secure
financial services, cordial and trustful relationship between clients and
MFI/banks helps in countering psychological barriers respectively.

of the user experience in Indian libraries.
Design/methodology/approach – The study is carried out in two
phases. First, is the collection of qualitative data from students and
visual data from Hunt library. This is followed by developing a
conceptual rubric for enhanced learning process.
Findings – The findings reveal that the user experiences in Hunt
library are different in many aspects when compared with Indian
libraries. The concerns of library users in the existing digital space
demand more facilities in the library and not a mere reading space. The
users expect a great Physical environment, Collaborative workspace,
creative ambience, recreation and other facilities in the library.  The
comparison of Hunt library with that of Indian libraries leads to
application of four learning theories.
Research limitations/implications – The study is limited to developing
a rubric, which is conceptual in nature and needs to be tested in the
subsequent research.
Practical implications – This paper will be of great help for Indian
libraries to enhance the quality of services offered in the library. This
study will further help the Indian libraries to have an understanding
of the services offered in Hunt library, which is considered to be
the epitome in terms of services delivered, which are in sync with
the user expectations. Through this study, the mapping can be done
to understand the position of an Indian library in comparison with
Hunt library. Book of Abstracts

Abstract
Purpose –The aim of this study was to design and develop a multi-
criteria decision model for measuring supplier satisfaction, its
Implementation and validation through case study.
Design/methodology/approach – A three stage methodology was
used to develop a framework to measure supplier satisfaction. The
framework involved factors and KPI’s from literature and exploratory
study. Further using the framework a multi-dimensional decision
model to calculate supplier satisfaction index is developed. The
proposed decision framework was implemented as a real-world case
study in an Indian manufacturing organization by using the Analytic
Hierarchy Process. A ten-step methodology was developed to quantify
supplier satisfaction towards buyer organization.
Findings – The study resulted in to two major contributions, first the
development of framework to measure supplier’s satisfaction using
factors and KPI’s suitable to the buyer organization. Second the model
developed to calculate supplier satisfaction helps in understanding
overall satisfaction of suppliers and also level of satisfaction of each
suppliers. Further the model can also be used to suggest improvements
to buyer organisation on specific factors and KPI’s under each factor.
The model was implemented and validated on real case company.
Research limitations/implications – supplier satisfaction plays an
important role in multinational companies (MNCs), so the sample of
practitioners in this study is relevant. However, it is likely that the
small sample size of only suppliers and companies selected solely
from the Indian arms of MNCs may have introduced some bias.
Practical implications – A comprehensive framework for enhancing
relationship with suppliers the SSI, SI, FPI and KPII will be

instrumental in deciding, managing and improving the level of
satisfaction of suppliers in manufacturing companies depending on
priorities of suppliers.
Originality/value – This approach provides the purchase managers
with flexibility of selecting factors and KPI’s under each factor based
on the requirements of the organization at every level of analysis
and a single index to establish supplier’s satisfaction with a buyer
company. The higher the value of satisfaction index better would
be the relationship with suppliers. The model further can be used to
improvise the specific factors and KPI’s under each factor by the buyer
company to enhance the level of supplier satisfaction.

Abstract
Purpose - This study is aimed to understand the applicability of
various lean operations management practices (LOM) in BPO/KPO
organizations and find a best way to implement them. LOM practices
have shown tremendous success in manufacturing sector and
gradually got implemented in services over last two decades. There
is a need to study LOM practices and implementation in a services
BPO/KPO organization.
Methodology/Approach - A case study approach of a large 3rd
party BPO/KPO organization providing IT support services. is taken
to show relevance of overall lean practices and various specific
LOM practices during an implementation cycle. Using within case
analysis, implementation success helps to understand applicability of
various practices, challenges faced and benefits from implementing
the practices.
Findings - The case study concludes with a strong need for
applicability of LOM practices in BPO/KPO organizations. The
need is due to high competitive environment and dynamic nature of
BPO/KPO industry, cost and hence efficiency being one of the major
drivers. Some of the LOM practices such as Value stream mapping,
Waste reduction, problem solving, continuous improvement, quality
circles, 5S, standard work, visual management and cross functional
teams seem quite easy to apply, while others such as work cell design,
level production, Kanban, inventory reduction, TPM, focussed
factory need expert guidance and a structured approach to apply.
Implementation sequence suggests strong need to focus on human
aspect of change management and some quick wins to decide on best
way to implement.

Research limitations/implications - Limitation of the study primarily
stem from the method of study i.e. cast study method. This limits the
generalization that can be done.
Practical implications - The research has very high implication in
the big part of services i.e. BPO/KPO organizations. It will act as very
useful guide to practitioners as they try and improve high failures of
LOM implementation. Academicians will benefit from a theory build-
up of case study of numerous factors and validation of an existing
theoretical model and its strengths and limitations.
The Originality/value of paper - This case study attempts to address
the gap of very little research done in LOM practices within of BPO/
KPO organizations. With the case study of large size and complexity
it will serve as useful guide for managers and can provide a way to
address highly competitive and dynamic nature of BPO/KPO industry.
To the best of knowledge of researchers there are very few similar case
studies. Hence this adds to the knowledge base of literature on LOM
practices in BPO/KPO organizations.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficiency of hotels and hospitality
sector in India by following a nonparametric Data Envelopment
Analysis (DEA) method. This study assesses performance in terms of
efficiency of Indian hospitality Industry. Using unbalanced panel data
from 75 to 84 hotels and hospitality business units operating in India
during 2007-2017, the study applies DEA to benchmark performance
of industry. One output variable (i.e. Total revenue) and four input
variables (i.e. Capital employed, cost of labour, gross fixed assets,
and other operating expenses) are selected for analysis. DEA scores
based on variable return to scale observed efficiency range of Indian
hospitality industry between 78.7% and 89.2% over the study period.
The results show performance disparity and gap among peers as most
of the units were in-efficient and only 7-15 firms were found to be
efficient during the study period. Constant returns to scales estimations
also observed similar results and the efficiency range was observed
between75.6% and 83.2% over the study period with the similar trends
of downfall and fluctuations in the performance. The performance
regress were largely due to the scale of operations of firms as most of
the firms were not operating on the optimum scale of operations which
resulted into gap in the performance parameters. The findings of the
study is limited to the financial data on input-output parameters due to
unavailability of data points on occupancy rates and other parameters
of hotel and hospitality industry. There are few studies in India to apply
efficiency analysis using DEA for the Pan-Indian hospitality sector.

Modelling Passenger Interaction Process
(PIP) Quality Model Framework Using ISM
and MICMAC approach
Sanjeev Kadam, Prabir Kumar Bandyopadhyay

Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune

Abstract
This research paper seeks to build theoretical framework considering
contextual relationship between outcome/enabler(s) that encompasses
during passenger interaction process (PIP) while using Mumbai
suburban train services. On site observations, self-travelling
experience and opinions of daily travelling passengers have been
used to form structural self-interaction matrix (SSIM). Interpretive
structural modelling (ISM) have been adopted to develop PIP quality
model framework and subsequently MICMAC approach is used to
investigate driving and dependence power of the outcome/enabler(s).
The PIP quality model framework portrays that passenger satisfaction
is top level consequential outcome perceived through passenger safety,
comfort and security which is derived from smooth PIP. However,
smooth PIP is reliant on combination of enablers. The understanding
of outcome /enabler(s) and their hierarchical relationship, driving
and dependence power should instigate authorities to reengineer PIP
especially for overcrowded suburban stations in Mumbai.
This topic is researched keeping in mind daily apprehensions of
millions of passengers those who travel by Mumbai suburban trains.
The amount of passenger views and opinions provided by passengers
considering their own time and environment of travelling, lack of
application of technology and lack of real-time experimentation in this
study may limit the robustness of research. Undoubtedly, findings of
this research may lay down foundation for authorities to reengineer
PIP so as to enhance passenger satisfaction. In future, this study can be
extended and validated by undertaking simulation and experimentation
in real environment.

Symbiosis International (Deemed) University

Abstract
Data analysis tools are much more than just tools when used with
huge volumes of data from variety of sources. These are capable of
generating high net worth information that can drive decision making
in a vast range of industries. Health and Wellness industry is still at
a nascent stage in the widespread use of data analytics for decision
making. This analysis uses data analytics tools (Annova, Chi-Square,
Pearson Correlation, Moderation) in Python Programming Language
for inferential analysis along with exploratory analysis of large volumes
of data collected from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent
Health (AddHealth) with specific study in the area of mental well-
being of adolescents. AddHealth is a representative school-based
survey of adolescents in grades 7-12 in the United States. The Wave-1
survey focuses on factors that influence adolescents’ health and risk
behaviors, including personal traits, families, friendships, romantic
relationships, peer groups, schools, neighborhoods, and communities.
With the rise in the number of suicides among these young age
population, it is not at all surprising to have personally seen and heard
about numerous cases of suicidal tendencies after minor setbacks in
the smallest fraction of years of life they have lived. External factors
getting complicated each day, it calls for an understanding of internal
factors that could be modified for a stronger and confident personality
development among adolescents. Therefore, the variables associated
with suicidal behavior among the adolescents have been identified
and included in this research. Therapists and professionals treating
depression often recommend various therapeutic leisure activities

factors that could strengthen this relationship for a better impact. Thus,
among the various internal factors that could be related to suicidal
tendencies, the variables associated with leisure activities have been
chosen. In the later part of the study another possible lurking factor in
this relationship, choice of breakfast, has been included to understand
how this changes the effect of leisure activities on depression and
suicidal behavior among adolescents. This research summarizes:
• The use of data analysis tools (Annova, Chi-Square, Pearson
Correlation, Moderation) to understand the relationship between
seemingly unrelated factors by retrieval, cleaning and analysis of
large volumes of data
• The analysis of data pertaining to leisure activities and its
association with depression, and suicidal tendencies among
adolescents to understand their relationships
• The findings regarding the strength and direction of relationships
and graphical representations for a clearer picture
• The leisure activities used in this study include active sports,
exercising, household chores and hobbies
• In the later part of the study ten choices of breakfast have
been comparatively tested to have any moderating effect on this
association
The findings from this research highlight:
• Clear associations of active sports and exercising on suicidal
tendencies
• Clear stronger association of exercising throughout the year on
depression when coupled with consumption of tea/coffee and not
having breakfast at all.
These findings based on analysis of data collected from a representative
population of American adolescents (sample size: 6504) would help
health and fitness industries and emerging startups not only take
directed impactful business decisions but also create a mentally and
physically fit young population.

Abstract
The present study investigates the impact of ownership and
management control on corporate governance of Indian companies
listed on the S&P BSE 100 index. The companies were analyzed over
a four year period from 2014 to 2017. The annual data on ownership
of the companies, promoter shareholding pattern, financial parameters
and corporate governance was obtained from CMIE PROWESS
database and Bloomberg Terminal respectively. By using univariate
tests and regression analysis, the researchers find that promoter’s
shareholding in the bracket of 0-25% has a significant impact on
corporate governance of companies. In these cases, the promoter
holds fewer voting rights, the interference or influence of promoter on
the policies to be followed by the company is lot less when compared
to cases where promoter shareholding is significantly higher.
The other results indicate that neither family nor professionally run
businesses have any significant impact on corporate governance of
listed companies in India. Finally, the implications and limitations of
the research are discussed.

Abstract
Knowledge based entrepreneurship is an effective mechanism to
transform knowledge into innovation. This kind of entrepreneurship
is characterized by an intense use of knowledge and creation of
new ideas. For them, new knowledge is an important asset, and
as knowledge has many sources, having access to it need to build
contacts. In this context, this paper examines empirically the role
of networks by focusing on two key features; knowledge and
opportunity. It explores how networks support Knowledge Based
Firms by investigating two case studies. The evidence of this
research points towards the role of networks within knowledge
and opportunity. The research shows that networks put closer the
opportunity to entrepreneurs by influencing their perception and
decision making. They also provide information and new ideas

The Seven Principles of Creative
Thinking-An Innovation Paradigm
Nishant Khandelwal, Anil Mehta

Manipal University, Jaipur

Abstract
There seems to be a general agreement in the business and academic
fraternity that 21st century is dominated by knowledge based economies
and is being led by knowledge workers who thrive on their capability
to generate, develop and disseminate such applied knowledge for
the business and social use. There is thus both a need of and demand
for innovations in each sector from these knowledge workers. As
businesses vie for innovative solutions to their business problems and
customer requirements, there is a higher pressure and continuously
increasing demand on the millennial workforce to think creatively and
innovate at a faster rate while still ensuring that the benefits outweigh
the costs involved. This paper conceptually proposes an enabling
mechanism for those individuals and organizations who would like
to meet this performance need by coming up with such innovative
solutions which are cost effective and quick to implement. It attempts
to propose seven principles as a package which leads to one generating
novel solution ideas to a given entrepreneurial problem or a social
need. While we may have encountered one or more similar sounding
thumb rule(s) or principle(s) in one or more places for success and
problem solving, this paper attempts to propose a judicious, novel ‘set
of seven principles coupled with leading questions and checkpoints’*
which are fundamental ways one can adopt and practice in a
sequential or simultaneous manner to specifically generate creative
ideas or solutions which when taken up dedicatedly may lead to
innovative process, product, services and problem solving including
the complex ones. This set of seven fundamental principles wherein
each principle is coined with a beginning letter ’P’ and is derived &
described by the author* exclusively for application as a collective

Abstract
Objective - Innovation and transformation challenges in business
model context are very highly debated and discussed by academia
and business practitioners, especially with digital transformation
becoming the core of business growth. Business model innovation
in service business context is also in the mainstream, yet the digital
services and customer centric managed services business models are
not well articulated by the current literature. This study is an attempt
to articulate the relations between business model innovation, digital
transformation and managed services approaches with practical
perspectives. Key focus this study is to present a model for better
comprehension and clarity to practitioners and researchers about
digital centric business transformation frameworks to further come out
with benchmark attributes that can be practiced in different industries
and business scenarios.
Methodology/approach - The study is based on literature based
investigation and exploratory reviews of current academic insights
related to the three themes of business model innovation, digital
transformation and managed service and articulate them as an extended
model with key dimensions and elements for service business models
and digital services.
Findings - Outcome of this study and the extended model presented
will enhance the underlying linkages between business innovation and
digital transformation as it related to as-a-service business models. We

Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of the paper is to focus on agriculture growth.
The key to agriculture growth are the farmers and the growth is
dependent upon risk management. Agriculture sector is always
evolved with several types of risks. We have made an attempt to build a
theoretical framework of the enablers and barriers of risk management
for sustainable farming.
Methodology - Ten enablers and ten barriers of production risk, price
risk and institutional risk management are identified through extensive
literature review. In order to further understand the interactions among
the enablers and barriers we have conducted an expert survey. Twenty
experts included farmers and agriculture scientists were approached
for further verification of the enablers and barriers. Experts interview
were conducted to further build network and transition links among
the enablers and barriers. After developing network, we have designed
a theoretical framework for risk management.
Findings - The study has proposed separate frameworks for
the enablers and barriers of risk management. Finally, we have
discussed the findings from the total interpretive structural modeling
approach (TISM). The findings give an important strategic tool for
risk management in agriculture. The enablers and barriers obtained
through literature and validated by experts play an important role in
farming sector. These enablers and barriers framework resulted into
two models. The models pertain to their relationship with each other
for risk management

Limitation - The study is based on developing a model using TISM
approach with a small sample size. The relative weightage of the
enablers and barriers are missing in the model which is also the
limitation of TISM approach. However we feel that the study can
be further extended by developing a quantitative study with a large
sample size.
Implications - This study will help to clearly understand the real
cause of decline in agriculture. The study has implications at academic
and managerial level. For academicians it will be a knowledge asset
for risk management and can lead to further researches. Farmers,
Government and private players can get important insights to improve
the agriculture growth.
Originality - This study meets the need of present time, as it clearly
illustrates both the enablers and barriers for managing the different
types of risk in farming.

Abstract
Micro enterprises play an important role in the growth and development
of the economy. It is a tiny business entity & is undertaken by the
poor people. These are in-fact unorganized enterprises conducted
mostly in the rural areas. In developing country like India; Micro
enterprises play a vital role in the growth and development of the
economy. The Government of India launched Prime Minister’s
Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) on 15th August 2008,
by merging the earlier two schemes namely Prime Ministers Rojgar

Family Entrepreneurship in India’s
‘Diamond City’: A Phenomenological
Research

Abstract
The paper aims to explore the experiences of family-run enterprise
owners in their attempt to grow their businesses in Surat, India. Family-
run businesses in Surat (a port city in India; an economic center) have
been in existence over the last 350 years. Essentially, the business class
has been successful as traders from the beginning. As early starters,
many family-run business owners in Surat have not been able to
grow their businesses across India and test international markets. The
researcher is intrigued to study the experiences of these family-run
enterprise owners. It is of much interest to explore the experiences of
such enterprises given their stagnant growth trajectory, less expansion,
and minimal diversification over the last several decades. Since the
investigating area is new, less explored and lacks the understanding of
how family-business enterprise owners experience their businesses;
thus the researcher used phenomenology as methodology to explore the
experiences of family-run enterprises while running their businesses.
Such knowledge is useful in formulating hypotheses that are subjected
to experimental investigation. As part of findings, the study identifies
existing challenges and strengths making the whole experience of
family-run enterprise owners unique, diverse and different from the
conventional businesses operating in varied industry. The findings
indicate that the potential of family-run enterprises have not been
harnessed to its fullest due to prevailing mediocrities, sub-standard
practice, sophisticated and disoriented business procedures and
system. As part of remedial measures, Organization Development
(OD) interventions would be useful to unearth the deeper issues and
problems amongst these family-run enterprises in Surat.
