Yes, Ma’am.
Let us sing!
Special products are just really fun.
It’s really fun to learn ‘bout binomials.
First is the product of two binomials.
So let us stretch our arms,
Right arm, left arm.

Special products are just really fun.

It’s really fun to learn ‘bout binomials.
Next is the product of the sum and difference
of binomials.
Right arm, left arm,
Right foot, left foot.

Special products are just really fun.

It’s really fun to learn ‘bout binomials.
Lastly is the square of binomial.
So let us wrap it all.
Right arm, left arm,

Right foot, left foot,
Chin up, turn around,
Sit down.
Based on the song, what topic will be integrated to
the activities we have today?
Special Products

C. ACTIVITY

You will be divided into three teams: Green, Red,

and Blue teams. Look for your teammates, then
form your respective group/team.

Here is the mechanics of the game:

Each group has a set of balloons in front. Each
balloon has a problem inside written in a paper.
One of your member will pop a balloon in front.
Then, will find the paper, and will solve the
problem.

Write the answer on the balloon-shaped colored

paper corresponding the color of the balloon you
popped. Then, post it on the board. Return to your
group to tap the next one to pop the balloon. Then
repeat the process until you popped all the balloons
and answer all the problems. You have five minutes
to finish the game.

Did you get the instructions clearly?

Yes Ma’am.
Before we start, here are the criteria for the game.
Criteria Points
All correct answers 10
Fastest group 5
Over-all Output 5
Group behavior 5
TOTAL 25

You may start now!

1st balloon: (x + y)2

2nd balloon: (x – 3)(x + 3)
3rd balloon: (x + 4)(x + 5)
4th balloon: (x + 5)2
5th balloon: (3x – 4)(2x + 7)
Answers:
1st balloon: (x + y)2
= x2 + 2xy + y2
nd
2 balloon: (x – 3)(x + 3)
= x2 – 9
rd
3 balloon: (x + 4)(x + 5)
= x2 + 9x + 20
4th balloon: (x + 5)2
= x2 + 10x + 25
5th balloon: (3x – 4)(2x + 7)
= 6x2 + 13x – 28
Let us check your answers.

(Count the total points of each group. Then, record it

on the score board.)

D. ANALYSIS
1. For Red team, what Special Product did you
use in problem no. 1?
We use the Square of a Binomial in solving
problem no. 1.
2. How did you get your answer using that
formula?
We get our answer by getting the square of the
first term plus twice the product of the first
and second term plus the square of the second
term.
Very good. Let us give the Red team a “You are
special” clap.

1. For Blue team, how did you derive with your

answer in problem no. 2?
We simply get the square of the first term
minus the square of the second term.
That is right. Let us give them “You are great” clap.

1. For Green team, what method did you use to

solve problem no. 3? And how did you obtain
your answer?
We use the FOIL method. First, we get the
product of the first terms of each binomial.
Then, we get the product of the outer terms.
Next, we get the product of the inner terms.
And finally, we get the product of the last
terms of each binomial.
Precisely! Let us give them “You are awesome” clap.

Special Products are special cases of forming

products of binomials.

1. THE PRODUCT OF TWO BINOMIALS

In forming the product of two binomials, we use the
FOIL method.
F stands for First (terms)
O stands for Outer (terms)
I stands for Inner (terms)
L stands for Last (terms)

Consider this two binomials:

(ax + by)(cx + dy)

where a, b, c, and d are real numbers.

Using FOIL method, find the product by getting the:

First terms, (ax)(cx) = acx2

Outer terms, (ax)(dy) = adxy3
Inner terms, (by)(cx) = bcxy
Last terms, (by)(dy) = bdy2

(ax + by)(cx + dy) = acx2 + adxy + bcxy +

bdy2

In symbol:
(ax + by)(cx + dy) = acx2 + (ad + bc) xy +
bdy2
Example:
F
O
(3x – 4)(2x + 7)
I
L
= (3x)(2x) + (3x)(7) + (-4)(2x) + (-4)(7)
= 6x2 + 21x – 8x – 28
= 6x2 + 13x – 28

2. THE PRODUCT OF THE SUM AND DIFFERENCE OF

A BINOMIAL

In symbol: (x + y)(x – y) = x2 – y2

In words: the product of the sum and difference

of two terms is the difference of the squares of the
terms.

Example:

(x + 4)(x – 4) = (x)2 – (4)2

= x2 – 16

3. SQUARE OF A BINOMIAL

In symbol: (x + y)2 = x2 + 2xy + y2

In words: the square of a binomial is the sum of the

square of the first term, twice the product of the
two terms, and the square of the last term.
*In squaring binomial difference, the middle term
will be negative.

In symbol:
(x – y)2 = x2 – 2xy + y2

Example:
(x + 9)2

Square of the first term, (x)2 = x2

Twice the product of x and 9,
2(x)(9) =18x
Square of the last term, (9)2 = 81

(x + 9)2 = x2 + 18x + 81

The result of the square of a binomial is known

as a perfect square trinomial.

E. ABSTRACTION
What are the three Special Products?
The Special Products are:
1. The Product of two Binomials
2. The Product of the Sum and Difference
of a Binomial
3. Square of a Binomial
Very good.
What the acronym FOIL stands for?
FOIL Method stands for:
First terms
Outer terms
Inner terms
Last terms
Excellent!
What will be the product of (x – y)2?
(x – y)2 = x2 – 2xy + y2
Great answer.
What will be the product of (x – y)(x + y)?
(x – y)(x + y) = x2 – y2
Precisely!
What will be the product of (ax + by)(cx + dy)?
(ax + by)(cx + dy) =
acx2 + (ad + bc) xy + bdy2
Very good.
What is the result of squaring a binomial?
The result of squaring a binomial is known as a
Nice answer. perfect square trinomial.

F. APPLICATION

There are 5 gifts with a problem/ question inside to
be shown on screen. I am going to open it and you
are going to find the answer as fast as you can.
Write your answer on the board provided then
stand and raise the board. Shout your team’s name
or make a yell. You have 10 seconds to answer each
problem/ question. First group to answer correctly
will have a special gifts.

G. VALUES INTEGRATION
YOU ARE SPECIAL because …
“You are God’s masterpiece.”
Ephesians 2:10

What does it mean? How will you relate it to our

topic for today?
Students answer may vary.
God made us special. We are His best and greatest
creation. He gave us unique identity, special talent
and skills. And that is what set you apart from the
other. So know your identity and worth, then own
it! Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Do not
let them fool or dictate your future because God
has set a perfect time for your success and brighter
future.

In relation to our topic, special products are set

apart from one another because they are special
cases of binomial products. Each of the formulas
uses different methods or ways in order to solve or
find their products.

Always remember that:

I AM SPECIAL.
I AM UNIQUE.
I AM GOD’S MASTERPIECE.
