effectiveness. The fact that requirements in both
areas are rising – security on the one hand, and cost-
effectiveness on the other – may initially appear to
be a contradiction in terms. This is not the case with
Rittal RimatriX5. Here, the two factors are perfectly
balanced: the result is known as efficiency.

RimatriX5 is an integral complete solution. The main

emphasis is on your IT performance, embedded
into a perfectly coordinated concept with five hard-
ware modules: Racks, Power, Cooling, Security,
Monitoring & Remote Management, completed

System solutions rather than piecework

When it comes to their requirements of an IT infrastructure, large and small companies are fairly similar: They both want to
know that the maximum possible availability of their IT systems is assured. They want information and communication around
the clock, 365 days a year and of course, the requirements of large and small companies are continually growing, at a rapid
pace. In fact, they grow just as quickly as the companies themselves are expanding. Whereas in the past, technical changes
and growth took years or even decades, these days evolution is happening on almost a monthly basis – and some of these
technical innovations are truly revolutionary. Progress was yesterday. Today, it is more a question of racing ahead.
One thing is sure: This race can only be won by a concept which is capable of continually adapting.

Efficiency throughout the line

Efficiency plans only make sense if they embrace every stage of the process, from acquisition, to operation, through to
maintenance. Viewed in this context, RimatriX5 offers the ultimate in efficiency across the board.

Impressively positive:
Total Benefit of Usership

An investment needs to pay off in the long term. Consequently, the formula for the most cost-effective calculation is as follows:
The only inexpensive investment is one which is worth its price, both at the time of purchase and in the longer term, i.e. over
its entire operating cycle. Put another way, something which may look like a bargain at first glance can conceal hidden costs.
Unfortunately, these do not only become apparent in permanent operation. This is why Rittal recommends considering all the
costs and what you will get in return.
Rittal not only considers the “Total Cost of Ownership – TCO”. We take things further – instead of TCO, we speak of TBU –
Total Benefit of Usership. TBU takes into account the benefits arising from usership of the product. You are on the right track
with RimatriX5.

Less planning input

Rittal maintains a close relationship with industry practice,
and develops system components which provides users with
modularity and scalability. The result: Even at the planning
stage, the time and associated cost input can be kept

Interruptions to critical business processes, whether due to hardware faults, production breakdowns,
communications failures or insufficient – or even non-existent – protection against voltage fluctua-
tions, can have far reaching consequences. After all, system availability and the reliability of the
IT infrastructure are decisive factors for the efficiency and productivity of company processes – and
business success.

The miniaturisation and rising performance of hardware components places particular requirements on
modern energy management. The answer to this dilemma: Power management with RimatriX5.
The demands with regard to redundancy, scalability and maximum availability are bundled into a single sys-
tem. Together, the solutions help to reduce operating costs and boost the availability of the overall system. It
is even possible to retrofit new modules without interrupting operation. Particularly effective: the “N+1” tech-
nology, which ensures optimum redundancy and enhances availability. The Power Modular concept PMC with
the innovative decentralised parallel architecture (DPA) offers maximum availability with an outstanding level
of efficiency.

The single-phase double conversion UPS (VFI-SS 111) is designed for use as a floor-standing enclosure and for 482.6 mm
(19˝) installation. A display which may be rotated through 90˚ ensures optimum operation in both installation positions. As well
as integral batteries which may be replaced in “hot swap” mode with the system operational, the 1 – 3 kVA UPS systems also
offer a USB port and two switchable EN 60 320 C13 outputs. The parallel-redundant 4.5 and 6 kVA UPS systems have the
“hot swap” functionality of the batteries in the external battery housing. Parallel redundancy switching of up to 3 UPS systems
makes it possible to achieve outputs of up to 12 kVA in parallel mode and in N+1 redundant mode. Communication is via a
serial interface. With all UPS systems, the use of an optional SNMP card is supported, which facilitates communication via the
network.

The use of a static transfer switch allows “single-corded
devices” (devices that have only one power pack) to be
operated with a redundant power supply. STS has two
infeeds that are switched automatically. The switching
time is less than 5 ms. This ensures that sensitive devices
can be operated without interference. The “Break before
Make” transfer ensures that the load is not fed concurrently
from two sources.

 Operation
The operating panel mounted on the housing front shows all
central functions and messages of the Static Transfer Switch.
All messages may also be evaluated with floating contacts.
The STS may optionally be supplemented with a quick-

cooling

Heat problems in data centres can oly be avoided through the implementation of new modular climate
control concepts. Due consideration must be given to parameters such as temperature, humidity, the
velocity, pressure and direction of air flows, as well as the heat losses of the installed components.

Rittal has the solution:

● Passive cooling (use of the ambient air)
● Active, rack-specific cooling
● High-performance cooling for temperature-neutral data centre expansion
In each case, the systems are tailored exactly to your specified wishes and application requirements, taking
into consideration all ambient conditions. Software-assisted planning tools minimise investment outlay and

High-Performance Cooling –
modular, scalable, efficient

Despite a dramatic rise in climate control requirements, cool-

ing practice in many companies has changed little in dec-
ades. Traditional room temperature control concepts soon
reach their limitations.
The consequence: High on-going operating costs, low levels
of efficiency, a lack of investment confidence, and reduced
operational reliability.

The modular configuration and scalability of the climate

control innovation Rittal Liquid Cooling Package (LCP) help
to minimise investment costs and maximise investment
confidence, while providing sufficient scope for future
extension. The result? Solutions that are geared to your
specific requirements, which may be rapidly supplemented
or replaced as your needs change.

Performance plus with Rittal Liquid Cooling

● Energy saving potential with processor-controlled cooling
technology
● Accurate, location-precise cooling
● Systems designed for maximum operational reliability
● Simple capacity adaptation and expansion
● Space-saving installation thanks to the high thermal
capacity of water (around 3,500 times greater than air)
● Spatial separation of cooling and server rack
● Active condensate management

The ever-rising packaging density of computer systems

and the constant growth in processor capacity inevitably
lead to extremely high heat generation in a confined
space. The innovative Liquid Cooling Package (LCP)
system range from Rittal offers a way out from this
“climate dilemma”.

34 Rittal RimatriX5
High level of IT security included

Scalability, operational reliability and redundancy come as stand-

ard with Rittal LCP. With the Liquid Cooling Package, either one or
two server racks may be cooled; stand-alone and bayed siting is
also possible (I) (II). Redundancy helps to ensure that the required
cooling output is always available, even in the event of a malfunc-
tion.

LCP Standard and LCP Plus are ideal for a redundant cooling, thanks to
the rack-optimised design (III).
The IT-compatible, automatic regulation of cooling output guarantees a
constant air inlet temperature for the server – even in the event of a fan
failure.
Comprehensive security solutions via CMC-TC.
The super-reliable condensate management system permits low inlet
temperatures. The diffusion-sealed design of the module prevents
condensation inside the rack, which in turn means reliable processes.

The LCP systems have their own controller, which can

be integrated into a monitoring network via the

Rittal video monitoring

Rittal network video monitoring

The Rittal IP monitoring solution supports extensive visual and alarm-

controlled monitoring. Unlike standard analog video monitoring solutions,
this digital video system offers a more extensive range of additional benefits.
Rittal IP cams may be integrated into any IP existing network. Separate
structured cabling, as required in analog systems, is not necessary. This
considerably reduces the costs associated with deploying.

The Rittal video monitoring system is modular and is able to grow dynamically
along with your requirements or data centre.

One IP-Cam is sufficient for a basic system. This is easily configured and operated
via the integral Web interface.
If the data needs to be backed up e.g. for evidence purposes, the free Rittal
software RiWatchIT “Video Edition”, designed exclusively for Rittal IP-Cams,
should be used.

A combination of video monitoring with the CMC-TC enclosure monitoring system

ensures even more extensive monitoring. This ensures that no actions are
concealed. All standard CMC-TC sensors such as access, smoke or temperature
sensors are supported. In short, the Rittal video monitoring solution affords perfect
all-round protection for a data centre equipped with Rittal technology.

This compact rack extinguisher system DET-AC Plus (Detection Active Plus)
is designed for use in the Rittal IT rack, fitted in the 482.6 mm (19˝) level. The
system is equipped with a 2-stage smoke analysis extractor system.

The eco-friendly, non-toxic Novec1) 1230 is used as the extinguisher gas, which
means that this extinguisher system is suitable for universal use. Sensitive
hardware such as servers, storage and switches are not impaired by the
extinguisher medium.

Due to the extremely sensitive detection of smoke, even in racks with a high level
of climate control (airflow speed), this ensures that there is plenty of time to
forward an alarm message.

In order to ensure that proper functioning of the system is maintained even in

the event of a power failure, an emergency back-up power supply with a stored
energy time of 4 hours is integrated into the system. The system can also be
supplied purely as an early fire detection system without the extinguisher.

RimatriX5: Comprehensive service – high level of efficiency. Even if the task is not a simple one, the path
to finding a solution need not be complex. At least, not if you are with Rittal from the outset. True, the integra-
tion of an individual rack is much more manageable than the development of a complex installation concept
for an entire IT centre. However, whether you are after a major contract or an individual solution, Rittal
approaches every task with the same high level of concentration. As far as our customers are concerned, we
take care of everything so that you have peace of mind. We “get” highly complex structures through the
trained eyes of a systems architect. We are adept at networked thinking and precision actions.

Step by step to the right solution. Generally speaking, we divide the entire process – the route from analy-
sis to solution – into three phases: The quotation phase, the implementation phase, and the maintenance
phase. The initial stages in phase 1 involve ascertaining the customer’s requirements, selecting a solution,
visualisation of the solution, calculation, construction meeting, more detailed specification of requirements,
and planning. In phase 2 we accompany you through to your ultimate goal. This stage is characterised by
installation, implementation and logistics. In phase 3, you have the option of agreeing a range of mainte-
nance and service packages with us.

The single thread that unites all these phases is service. From presales, to sales, through to post-
sales, we tailor the ideal package of services to suit every module.

Rittal RimatriX5 55
Professional RimatriX5 project management

system and service; a fully integrated model which Rittal has developed to perfection with RimatriX5.
We take care of the details to put you ahead of the game.

Advice and planning:
The basis for optimum solutions

Rittal climate checks – Service packages for every aspect of IT cooling

Load test
482.6 mm (19˝) slide-in equipment which simulates the thermodynamic response
of servers allows you to determine in advance whether your cooling system is
adequate for any planned extensions. Furthermore, after installing the LCP family
(Liquid Cooling Package), the cooling response can be tested directly, without the
presence of a server.

Load tests as the optimum basis for planning.

Intelligent wireless sensor technology
Sensors the size of a button record the temperature and humidity at specified
locations in the rack. The location and time-dependent readings are extracted
and displayed. The result is a 3D analysis of the data centre's cooling response.

With sensor technology for 3D analyses.

Piping network calculation
The Rittal specialists use a software package to design and dimension the pipe
networks of liquid cooling systems, taking into consideration the architectural
conditions. The specifications created allow the local installation engineer to start
work immediately.

Perfect dimensioning of pipe networks

CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)
A 3D computer simulation is used to visualise the thermodynamic response of the
planned data centre with server racks and climate control system. Predicting the
temperature, speed, pressure and hence flow conditions in the data centre
facilitates faster reaction times.

Forward planning with CFD.

Thermography
Using a thermal imaging camera illustrates the temperature conditions (surface)
inside the data centre with colour coding, hotspots can be located and eliminated.

Localisation of hotspots via thermography.
