COURSE HANDOUT
Date: xx/yy/2019

Course Code : TCE 701

Course Title : Bridge Engineering
Contact Hours : 3L-1T-0P
Instructor - in – charge : Nishant Kumar

Prerequisites: Design of RC Structures & Design of Steel Structures.

Course Description: The objective is to equip the students with a thorough understanding of
the behavior and design of bridges. Various applied loads, such as truck load, impact,
horizontal braking/centrifugal forces, wind and seismic loads are discussed thoroughly.
Background to design equations for different types of bridges and relevant modern research
will also be discussed to provide the students with solid understanding of the topics covered.
Course Outcomes: At the end of the course, the student will be able to

 Familiarize with the types, suitability, selection, design criteria of various types of
bridges
 Impart knowledge for analysis and design of various types of bridges
 Understand the design of slab culvert, Box culvert
 Understand the design of T beam bridge and substructures
 Understand the bridge bearings
 Understand the basic concepts of piers and footing
