A Counter Position Paper on Drugs Among Students

Drug abuse has been a serious problem that our country is facing. Our government

has been dealing with this for a serious amount of time. In our generation, even students

and children are now doing drugs. In the article, the author mentioned his main argument:

save kids from drug abuse by implementing mandatory drug tests. This under the

Comprehensive Dangerous Drug Act of 2002 that is being handled by the Philippine Drug

Enforcement Agency.

While reading on the claims, one couldn’t help to notice a few points that the author

failed to prove correctly. First he stated: Children need optional privacy protection. The

question is, how will they save the kids from drug abuse if the author considers their

privacy protection? They will not be able to help these kids knowing that they would most

likely fail to go drug tests and stay quiet. Second, the author suggested to consult the

parents of the child who will be drug tested. The problems with this is that if the Philippine

Drug Enforcement Agency consults them first, they will never know if the parents are drug

users in addition that their child might be. As a result, the parents would not allow the

PDEA to perform a drug test on their child so that they won’t go through drug testing as

well. This is because if they found out that the parents are drug users while their child is

being drug tested they will be facing bigger consequences and charges.

In my opinion, the PDEA should perform drug tests to any levels without the

consent of DePed officials, educators, parent-teacher associations in order for this

implementation to work effectively. By doing this, the government can help a lot of

children/students quickly and effectively without conflicts because of consents. Also,

having drug tests in schools would make the students avoid the use of drugs for they will

be made aware of the drug-testing and the consequences under drug use.
