1) Pictorially classify engineering materials. Provide at least four examples for

each type of material.
Ans:- Classification with example given in below diagram.

2) Mention ONE special property/information about each type of Cast Iron.

Ans:-

Types of cast iron

1.White cast iron

Properties:-White cast iron has a high compressive strength and excellent wear
resistance, and it retains its hardness for limited periods even up to a red heat.
2.Grey cast iron

Properties:-
● High Compressive Strength. This strength is defined by the endurance of any
metal or alloy to withstand its compressive forces. ...
● Tensile Strength. ...
● Resistance to Deformation. ...
● Low Melting Point. ...
● Resistance to Oxidation. ...

3.Malleable cast iron

Properties
1. High Tensile Strength
2. High yield point

4.Ductile cast iron

Properties:-
Ductile iron owes its remarkable mechanical properties to the spheroidal shape of its
graphite:

● tensile strength,
● impact resistance,
● high elastic limit,
● good elongation

3) Recommend suitable materials for each of the application listed below:

a) Abrasion Resistant Surface

Ans:-Ceramics or Ceramics coating

b) Hubs for wheels and brake supports - (machined and not forged)

Ans:-Carbon steel

c) Automobile parts such as cylinders, piston, piston rings etc

Ans:- Cast Iron

d) Crane hooks, chains, railway couplings

Ans:-Wrought iron or steel

e) Automobile components, where weight is an issue

Ans:-Aluminum, magnesium, copper, plastics and carbon fiber

f) Aircraft engine cylinder heads and piston. Large strength at high

temperature

Ans:-Cast or forged aluminum alloy

g) Corrosion resistant bearing material

Ans:-Chrome Steel

h) Boiler fittings, bushes, glands. Working in cold state.

Ans:-Wrought iron

i) Foundry patterns and water bearings

Ans:-Foundry patterns making are wood, metal or plastics. Wax and Plaster of Paris
are also used

For water bearings naval brass or non metallic phenolic resin

j) Belt drives, washers

Ans :-The Materials Used For Belt Drive

● Leather belts. The leather is the most significant material for flat belts. ...
● Cotton or fabric belts. The fabric belts are commonly used for temporary
application. ...
● Rubber belt. They are made by impregnating fabric or canvas with rubber and
have a thin layer of rubber on the surface of the belt. ...
● Balata belts.
● Washers can be fabricated from a variety of materials including Steel –
Carbon steel, spring steel, 304 stainless steel, and 316/316A stainless steel.
Metal – Copper, brass, aluminium, titanium, iron, bronze, and zinc.

k) Seals

Ans:-Acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber
4. What is the difference between Plain carbon steels and Alloy steels. Mention
examples and applications for both.

Ans:-

Plain carbon steels Alloy steels

It is obtained by adding carbon to the It is obtained by adding

Steel. And properties depends on the elements other than carbon

Carbon percentage. To the steel to impart desired
Properties.

Examples: AISI 304, AISI316L Examples: 35Ni1Cr60,

30Ni4Cr1, 40Cr1Mo28, 37Mn2

Applications: Applications:
Automobile panels, Gears, Axles corrosion resistant containers,
Bolts, springs, cutting tools. Boat propellers, coins, medals,
Heavy gears

5.A standard alloy steel used for making engineering components is 20Cr18
Ni2. State the composition of the steel.
Ans:-Composition of 20Cr18 Ni2 is - 0.2% carbon, 18% chromium and 2% nickel

6. What is creep failure of material?

Ans:-Creep may be defined as a time-dependent deformation at elevated
temperature and constant stress. It follows, then, that a failure from such a condition
is referred to as a creep failure or, occasionally, a stress rupture.

7. What is meant by strain energy and resilience?

Ans:- Resilience is the ability of the material to store energy when deformed within
elastic limit and release energy when unloaded.
Strain energy is the energy stored when deformed within elastic limit. The difference
is ability and stored energy.
